Never worry about losing devices and other belongings again with the Apple AirTag. This sleek tracking disc can be slipped into a wallet or tablet case, or you can use an optional accessory to key it with your keys or attach it to a purse, bag, or backpack. Wherever the AirTag goes, you can use Apple's Find My app to find it. When it's nearby, use the Find My app to locate it, have your AirTag play a sound through its built-in speaker, or you can simply say "Hey Siri, find my key.". Notifications can also be viewed on an Apple Watch, and if you own an iPhone 11 or 12, you can take advantage of Precision Finding. If your item is truly lost, you can even employ the wider Find My network of Apple devices to locate it.

What is the range at which it locates, feet, yards, or miles?
AirTag is merely a coded signal transmitter with a very short range measured in feet but it's potentially locatable by its owner or authorized user globally.
It does not do any actual locating directly but instead relies upon any qualified device that detects it. Each AirTag sends a unique signal to identify itself, much like a serial number but it can be seen on your screen as whatever you name it.
It basically works in two ways:
1) If you need to find something at very short range such as around your house or business, you can use your device, such as a cell phone or iPad, to read it's location. It will tell you distance and direction where the AirTag Bluetooth signal is coming from;
2) If you need to locate an AirTag missing beyond the very short Bluetooth signal range, then the Find My network operated by Apple might find it for you. Your missing AirTagged asset can even be thousands of miles away.
Basically any device (such as a cell phone or cellular iPad) participating in the Find My network might pass near your missing AirTag. Then it would automatically relay your uniquely coded AirTag signal through the Find My network directly to your device (e.g. your cell phone), naming and mapping the exact location where the signal was received. If a stranger with an iPhone on the Find My network passes near your AirTag, the stranger does not need to do anything. It's all automatic. You get the location data.
AirTags do not encode locations. GPS locations are encoded for you by the devices that detect any AirTag Bluetooth signal just a very short distance away from them in yards or meters.
The Find My network has user options allowing you to search for any missing AirTagged asset. For more info, read about the "Find My" network, which is operated by Apple.

If I put an Airtag into my camera bag and it was ...
If I put an Airtag into my camera bag and it was stolen, what's to keep the thief from deactivating it?
I asked this question after reading information provided by Apple as to how the AirTag worked:
AirTag is designed to discourage unwanted tracking. If someone elses AirTag finds its way into your stuff, your iPhone will notice its traveling with you and send you an alert. After a while, if you still havent found it, the AirTag will start playing a sound to let you know its there.
Of course, if you happen to be with a friend who has an AirTag, or on a train with a whole bunch of people with AirTag, dont worry. These alerts are triggered only when an AirTag is separated from its owner.
It seems to me that thief could be alerted to the presence of an Air Tag by simply using an iPhone. Am I wrong?
