I got this lens to pair with my A7iii. I mainly shoot wildlife and bird photography. If you are into those types of things, this lens will be perfect for you!

All-around great lens -- just not for me.

This lens is well-built, relatively lightweight, and the photos it produces exhibit beautiful colors and plenty of detail. The stabilization is excellent and allows photos at shutter speeds slower than I thought would be possible. The autofocus is quick and tracks as good as any other lens I own. It offers a robust feature set. But there were two issues, at least for my application, that prohibit me from granting it a 5 star rating. The first issue involves the push-pull zoom ring lock. Upon using the lens on my A7III, I found it balanced well with my left hand supporting it by the zoom ring. Because of this, whenever I angled the lens upward to take a shot, it would inadvertently engage the zoom lock. I tried holding/supporting the lens in different locations -- both in front of the zoom ring and behind it -- but these positions felt awkward and unbalanced. The second issue was that the lens makes a continuous, slight 'whirring' noise. I switched to manual focus, turned the VC off, but nothing I tried seemed to make it stop. It's not loud, but when shooting video, the sound could be heard in the audio track. I really wanted to like this lens, and found most of its features to be top notch. But the two noted issues were enough to keep me from permanently adding it to my arsenal. Thankfully, B&H's excellent customer service authorized a return and provided a refund.

Just what I wanted

Already took a good wildlife picture day on my way home from FedEx. Only thing I knocked it off for is the zoom clutch or whatever you call it. It's odd. Instructions aren't so hot when trying to figure out what setting to use for the anti-shake settings but there are youtube videos out there to help. Nice purchase.

It's sharp and focuses very fast. Only downside is it's a bit heavy.

The size and weight of this lens takes some getting used to. I'm impressed at the quality of images I am getting from it. It's a great addition with my Sony 24-105 G, and a Zeiss Batis 1.8/85mm lenses. I recommend this Tamron 150-500 lens to anyone wanting to capture good images of wildlife and distant objects. I'm an amateur photo hobbyist, and this lens was the quality I wanted at the price point I could afford. I'm happy with this lens.

Solid option

After trying three copies of the Sigma 100-400 DN lens, which I really wanted to work because of its size, I finally broke down and bought this on sale. One copy of the Sigma was absolutely terrible and the other two just did not impress me, which was worrying because I have seen so many sharp images from that lens, and it reviewed well. Took the Tamron out and was immediately pleased with the results. Birds are sharp, landscapes look great, and the close focusing is impressive. It also fits into my current camera bag (barely). The cons are that it is a big, heavy, pumper zoom and the image stabilization isn't that great. There's no perfect telephoto lens for my situation; the Sony GM lenses with teleconverters are too expensive, and the 200-600G is too big for my shooting/carrying style. This lens has the right set of compromises for me right now.

Had a bad experience..

I unfortunately, at the long zoom end, could not achieve one single useable birds in flight picture. All blurry, soft, completely unuseable. Tried all three stabilization settings, nothing. I know it was the lens, too, as I can achieve great results with my Sony 100-400 G Master lens. Static shots on the long end were pretty sharp and acceptable but when going for moving objects, not so much. I'm talking about cranes and eagles and seagulls, too, nothing really darty and challenging. Anyway, quite disappointing and I hope, for Tamrons sake, that this was a bad sample of the lens and not an experience everyone will suffer.

The rear element on the 150-500mm does not move. If you are feeling any movement, it is most likely the VC element.

According to Tamron's original press release, due to the current global health crisis, the release date or product supply schedule for the Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VXD Lens for Sony E could change. We have not received an updated shipping date for the 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VXD Lens, but do note that all pre-orders must be shipped before the lens will be listed in our inventory as "In Stock" for shipping or in-store pickup. As such, the fastest way to obtain the lens before it is listed as "In Stock" would be to place a pre-order for the lens, and once the lens starts arriving from the manufacturer, all pre-orders will be shipped in the order in which they were received.
