Key Features
  • APS-C | f/2.8 to f/16
  • 16.5-30mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • Fast Ultra-Wide Angle Zoom
  • Rapid eXtra Silent Stepping Drive Motor
The dynamic 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A2 RXD Lens from Tamron is a fast-aperture ultra wide-angle zoom lens for Sony E-mount APS-C mirrorless cameras. It features a fast and constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and has a compact and lightweight design. This ultra-wide lens is particularly suitable for landscape, astrophotography, and architectural shooting. Its bright f/2.8 aperture complements this range and affords increased control over depth of field along with enhanced low-light performance. The optical design incorporates one XLD element, two LD elements, and two glass-molded aspherical elements to produce a highly corrected image with reduced chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy. Individual elements also feature Tamron's BBAR coating, which suppresses flare and ghosting for greater contrast when working in backlit and harsh lighting conditions. A responsive RXD stepping drive motor enables quick, near silent autofocus performance to suit stills and video. The minimum object distance is just 5.9" at the widest end of the zoom range, unlocking powerful wide-angle macro shooting capability with a unique perspective that makes near objects look larger, and distant objects smaller. Additionally, the f/2.8 maximum aperture produces a shallower depth-of-field that creates soft bokeh background details. Moisture-resistant construction protect the lens under inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating on the front lens element protects against dust, dirt, and smearing.

outside of it being a F/2.8, would it be worth buying this over the "Sony 10 - 18 F4" Lenses?
Asked by: Ryan
"Worth"? That depends on what is valued more by a particular photographer. With respect to doing Infrared photography, this Tamron lens is unequivocally SUPERIOR to the Sony lens in question, as confirmed by my own IR Hotspot tests of the Tamron as well as of two Sony lenses released in 2022, the 10-20 mm PZ and the 11 mm f/1.8! The Kolarivision IR Hotspot Database already listed the Sony 10-18 mm f/4 lens as being a "Poor Performer" for IR photography.

When using an APS-C lens on a full frame camera, the crop is approximately 1.5x. This lens would act like a 17-30mm 35mm equivalent.

If I use manual focus then turn off the camera, does the focus "reset" or does it maintain its position?
Asked by: Dindo
When manually focusing with the Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD Lens for Sony E the focus position remains the same even when the camera is turned off. However, the focusing ring on the lens may still rotate when powered off, despite it not changing the focusing distance.
