Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH. Reviews

SL2 in the Cold

I just purchased an SL2 with a Leica 24 to 70 lens. After lots of research, other than the quality of the optics, I was drawn to the camera by the simplicity of the design and the durability. My first walk with the camera was in the winter at about -25C, in a snow storm. Just after getting out of my truck I stepped into a patch of soft snow, fell and buried the camera and I mean buried the camera. I pulled it out and it was already covered in ice. I brushed it off, cleaned the lens with a cloth and proceeded to take pics for about 2.5 hours. No issues with moisture, battery or operation. Because of the snow storm the top knob got a layer of ice on it which I managed to chip off and get it working again. Enough said, the right choice.

Its not really a Lecia But I still love it.

This is amde in Japan by Sigma, we all know that. But leica has made it thier own stell barrel etc, and the price is worth the lens in my opinion. If you want a stone cold Leica lens you will be paying twice at least. I didnt buy the kit I got the SL2-S at a brick and mortar, and bought the lens here to compare it to my canon 24-70mm and they are neck in neck and it might actually be a tad better.

Superb Leica Zoom Lens for the SL System

The 24-70mm Vario-Elmarit-SL is a wonderful lens for the Leica SL, SL2, and SL2-S cameras. The image quality is excellent, and the lens handles beautifully on those cameras (even if a little too big and heavy for the CL or TL2), which makes it a very comfortable and convenient, carry-round-all-day, single-lens setup---this as opposed to the optically quite superb 24-90mm Vario-Elmarit-SL, which is longer and heavier and makes those cameras front-heavy. The build of this new 24-70mm lens is all metal and rock solid, and the focus and zoom rings turn with the smoothness one would expect from Leica. So forget all the meaningless nonsense about whether the lens were made in Japan by Sigma, because the only important thing is that it is made fully up to Leica quality standards. It's a terrific lens, and you will get what you pay for!

The Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH lens is that good with less weight to carry. The image quality is impressive. It's like having three prime lenses in one lens.

good but not stellar

I was comparing the resolution to Lumix 24-105mm f/4. Yes the 24mm is way better on the Leica but the 50mm, 70mm is softer than Lumix! I think it's time to try Lumix S Pro 24-70mm

DO NOT GET THIS LENS (EVEN A LITTLE) WET

By William

I tend to shoot with M-mount glass, but wanted something more flexible, that focuses closer, and was water resistant. This lens totally covered the first requirements, but failed miserably once it got a *little* wet. I honestly don't know what i was thinking - it is impossible to seal a lens that has a zoom element like this. Even just a little dampness is gonna get drawn into the lens when you extend the zoom element. So... this lens really was ALL the stars, until it turned into a terrarium. It gets a star because the camera-side seal held fine and did not ruin my camera. And i will give a second star because it really IS a nice lens. Would i recommend this lens to others: Actually no. Considering how it failed for me, i would recommend just getting the Sigma version - way cheaper, and just as water resistant (not at all).

I think the staff of B&H have not answered your question correctly. Your question was, can we assume that Sigma is manufacturing this lens under Leica's control? The answer, No, Sigma lenses are not manufactured under Leica control does not address the question. The correct answer should be, No, this Leica lens is not manufactured by Sigma.

There are no tests comparing the focus throw between these two lenses--it's a test you would need to carry out on your own.
