Leica SL2 Overview

Bundling an advanced camera body with a versatile zoom lens, the SL2 Mirrorless Camera with 24-70mm f/2.8 Lens from Leica pairs the full-frame SL2 camera body with the fast Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH. lens.

Leica SL2 Mirrorless Camera

Pairing sophistication with flexible imaging capabilities, the Leica SL2 is the second-generation SL camera mixing apt photo and video specifications with a refined design. Featuring a 47.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor and Maestro III image processor, fast and fluent performance enables up to 20 fps continuous shooting, 6 fps shooting with AF-C, 5K video at 30 fps, and DCI 4K60 video with 10-bit color sampling. The sensor's design also incorporates a Leica Object Detection AF system, which uses 225 selectable AF areas for fast and accurate performance. Also complementing photo and video applications, a 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization system minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Beyond updated imaging, the SL2 also features an updated body design that includes a new 5.76m-dot EyeRes OLED EVF and a large 3.2" 2.1m-dot touchscreen LCD. A top status LCD is also featured for quick recognition of shooting settings and dual UHS-II-compatible SD memory card slots offer file-saving flexibility. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work in conjunction with the Leica FOTOs app for wireless file transferring and remote camera control.

47.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and Maestro III Processor
Featuring a full-frame 47.3MP CMOS sensor and Maestro III image processor, the SL2's imaging capabilities have been optimized for high-resolution recording along with notable sensitivity, a wide 14-stop dynamic range, and flexible recording modes. The sensor's design omits a low-pass filter in order to maintain the highest degree of sharpness and resolution. When paired with the Maestro processor, noise levels are further suppressed throughout the sensitivity range, from ISO 50-50000, and processing capabilities further yield fast full-resolution continuous shooting speeds up to 20 fps with an electronic shutter, 10 fps with a mechanical shutter, and 6 fps with a mechanical shutter and AF-C, for up to 78 consecutive DNG files.
5K and 4K Video Recording
Beyond stills shooting, the SL2 is a capable video camera featuring up to 5K (4992 x 3744) recording with 10-bit color, as well as DCI, UHD 4K, and Full HD settings. Also, high-speed recording modes for UHD 4K60, with 30 fps playback, and Full HD 180 fps, with 30 fps playback, offer 2x and 6x slower motion, respectively.

Complementing the video quality, a dedicated Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) Photo Style mode and L-Log gamma profile can be used to expand highlight and shadow details and offer greater flexibility when color grading. Additionally, recording to an optional external recorder is possible, via the HDMI Type A port, and support for an external microphone and headphones are also available via dedicated 3.5mm jacks.
Body Design
  • Used in conjunction with other members of the L-Mount Alliance, the L lens mount is a versatile interface with a mount diameter of 51.6mm and a flange distance of 20mm for working with a broad range of optics.
  • An impressive EyeRes EVF is a high-resolution 5.76m-dot OLED finder offering a clear 0.78x configurable viewing magnification along with a smooth 120 fps refresh rate, 0.005 sec lag, and 10,000:1 contrast ratio.
  • Large 3.2" 2.1m-dot touchscreen LCD is a bright, clear means for live view shooting as well as playback and menu navigation. This screen also uses Gorilla Glass for a highly durable design.
  • In addition to the rear LCD, a 1.28" top status LCD can also be used for quickly reviewing shooting settings, even when the camera is powered off.
  • Durable, weather-sealed magnesium-alloy construction is splash, dust, and freezeproof to accommodate working in harsh weather conditions and trying environments.
  • Dual UHS-II-compatible SD memory card slots offer flexible image storage, allowing you to segregate raw and JPEG files to different cards, save duplicate files to both cards, or simply double your storage space with overflow recording.
  • A USB Type-C port allows for fast file transferring as well as high-speed in-camera battery charging. Additionally, an HDMI Type A port benefits video applications, and 3.5mm microphone and headphone jacks suit advanced audio recording needs.
  • BP-SCL4 rechargeable lithium-ion battery is rated for approximately 370 shots per charge when working with the rear monitor.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi, when used in conjunction with the Leica FOTOS app for iOS and Android, permits sharing imagery directly to a linked mobile device and also enables remote control over the Q2 and remote shooting via a live view image. Additionally, Bluetooth LE helps to maintain a permanent connection between the mobile device and the camera, enabling remote waking of the camera and automatic connection anytime within range.
Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization
Helping to achieve the utmost sharpness when photographing handheld, 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization compensates for a broad range of movement types to render sharper, clearer imagery.

Using sensor-shift stabilization technology, the SL2 also features a Multishot mode to capture and compile eight separate exposure to create a single 187MP raw or JPEG file. Suitable for static subjects and when working on a tripod, this mode creates a more highly detailed and color accurate image than a single shot alone can produce and produces an image with a 16736 x 11168-pixel resolution.
Object Detection Autofocus System
For accelerated autofocus performance, a Leica Object Detection AF system quickly calculates the distance to subjects and adjusts the focusing position with sensor and lens communication occurring at rates up to 480 fps. This contrast-detection type focus method benefits both still and video recording modes, as well as subject tracking applications through the use of a Body Detection mode. It also features 225 selectable AF areas, which provide excellent control over where the camera will focus.
Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH. Lens

Spanning a popular and versatile range of focal lengths, the Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH. Lens from Leica is designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras. Ranging from wide-angle to portrait length, this lens provides excellent sharpness across all f-stops and focus distances, and three aspherical elements greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions for notable image sharpness and clarity. The lens's f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in a variety of lighting conditions while offering precise control over focus position for working with shallow depth of field techniques, and a quiet and precise autofocus motor benefits both stills and video capture. Well-suited for nearly any photographic application, the lens offers lighter weight thanks to the omission of OIS, and this compact workhorse is constructed with a metal body and weather-sealing for durability and protection in harsh environments and inclement weather conditions.

  • Wide-angle to short-telephoto 24-70mm L-mount zoom designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras
  • Fast internal focusing with a single, lightweight lens element
  • Consistent f/2.8 maximum aperture through full zoom range for working in difficult lighting conditions
  • Excellent sharpness across all f-stops and focus distances with creamy bokeh
  • Three aspherical elements reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased image sharpness and clarity
  • Compact dimensions and lighter weight thanks to omission of OIS
  • Weather-sealed design protects against dust and moisture

Leica SL2 Reviews

Stunning Camera & great B&H service

I have received my SL2 over the SL2 S after I was kindly assisted by B&H who put up a video demo online for me to compare . The SL2 is an amazing camera with a very intuitive interface. I am coming from the Fuji world and Leica Qi's as well and the learning curve was not steep at all. Kudos Leica fur the ease of use. The sensor is stunning and offers very good recovery possibilities from over and under exposures. I coupled mine with a Panasonic LUMIX Pro 50mm f1.4 and the AF is really fast. Face tracking is good and for my type of photography, eye tracking is doing overall pretty good . My friends have been amazed by the portrait I shot and they also love to shot with this camera. Battery life is one of the little complaint I have, and weight also compared to my beloved Fuji X-H1. However I think the weight contributes to the shooting stability when low shutter speed is required . Overall it is a game changer for me and my personal style of shooting, mainly still portraits

A++++

Compared to my Canon 5D4. Makes really good pictures. I am still finding the operating system less well thought out when compared to Canon. My only real complaint is that in very bright sun I find the electronic viewfinder is not okay. I have to use one hand next to my eye to block out the sun and the rear panel LCD display is completely blocked by bright sun. In the film camera days, I purchased a rubber eye cup adapter that did great at blocking the sun, such an accessory would be welcome. I find that holding the joystick down to lock focus like a back button focus function is not as convenient as the Canon system. Complaints aside, it makes really good pictures and that was the point of purchasing the Leica.

Leica's Next Level Art Camera Will Inspire You!

My Leica SL2 with Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH lens combo is amongst the best camera systems I have ever had the privilege of photographing with. The SL2 and lens are not the lightest or smallest on the block, nor does the SL2 have the fastest autofocus or high-ISO capability. But like everything else in photography, there are always tradeoffs. What this camera does offer is image quality that is absolutely astonishing. The legendary Leica 3D pop and DOF separation (and wide-open lens sharpness) are breathtaking. The color science and micro contrast are simply exceptional. The tank-like weather sealing is robust. The menu systems are wonderfully organized, and the minimalist configuration of the camera makes shooting completely intuitive. I want my camera to get out of the way of my creativity, not hinder it. When it comes to size and heft, everything is relative. Compared to my D850 with 24-70 VR lens, this set-up is roughly comparable, and I feel like the weight and proportions are perfectly counter-balanced for steady handholding. Throw in a fast prime lens combined with the camera's 5-axis in-body sensor-shift image stabilization that delivers approximately 5.5 stops of stabilization, and you have an extremely powerful low-light tool at your disposal. Yes, Leica is expensive, but no more so than many of the flagship models coming from other manufacturers like Sony or Nikon. I find it amusing when I read comments from people who claim that Leica is only for rich doctors and lawyers or that they can buy three cameras for the price of one SL2. When it comes to cameras, it's more important to focus on the value, not the cost. I was able to purchase because I saved up and sold off some of my unused equipment. Leica is a higher-price-point luxury brand just like you'd find in any other retail consumer category. But that doesn't diminish its worth or capability. Some of the most iconic images throughout history have been taken with Leicas, and the hand-crafted philosophy Leica employs on the production line can only be admired. Like any other camera system, Leica is a creative tool and paintbrush. Each of us need to use what works best for our photographic goals. My SL2 with prime lens is my art camera, best used for slower, more thoughtful compositions. When I need blazing speed or focal length flexibility, I break out my very capable D850 with zoom. Owning a Leica will never improve my photography or storytelling, that's always been in my hands. But owning a Leica will inspire you and reward you with some of the best-looking raw files your eyes have ever seen. I'm only getting started.

The Leica Anti-M (In a Good Way)

I love my Leica M cameras; they have provided me many intimate photos and I expect them continue to do for many years. But with the SL2 and the SL 24-90 Vario-Emarit, one can still have a Leica but do things that are just not possible with the M. Auto focus, zoom, EVF for critical focusing with the 50 Nocti, image stabilization. It's all there.

With the new firmware this camera is simply amazing!

No Recording Time Limitations and amazing new autofocus features = What a huge improvement. Just like the SL2-S, the SL2 is no longer limited to 30 minutes of internal recording. With high capacity SDXC cards and the new high efficiency recording codec, you'll now be able to record hours worth of footage in either 4K or FHD without the need for an external recording device like an Atomos Ninja.

Impressive !

There is an old expression that Everything look's better in your mind's eye than it will in your hand. That is definitely not true with this camera. Beautifully designed and built and a joy to use. Expensive but there are no disappointment's. It did not come with a real owners manual (there is a download), but if you call Leica they will mail you one. Outstanding quality , images, and color.

I have a Leica CL. I know I can use these lenses on the SL2 and I know that I will have about a 20 MP image, but what will be the effective focal lengths, for example, what would be the focal length equivalents of my 11-23mm TL lens on the SL2? 11-23 or 18-35?
Asked by: Fran
Because the SL2 is cropping the image down to about 20mp, it is the same as using a crop frame sensor camera like the CL. Therefore the 11-23mm would look like a 17-35mm if you were comparing it to a full frame camera.

Is camera generated timecode carried on the hdmi output?
Asked by: James
The SL2 generates a Free Run or Rec Run Time Code and is written to the recorded file. It goes through HDMI. You can set a time or use the camera time. Free run means the timer continues whether the camera is recording or not. Rec run means the timer only runs while the camera is recording.
