Featuring an economical cartridge-free printing system, this printer offers low-cost replacement ink bottles without sacrificing print quality. The ET-8550 lets you print everything from 3.5 x 5" to 13 x 19" borderless photos to customized CDs and DVDs. A 4.3" color touchscreen offers fast and easy performance and voice-activated printing is supported as well. I've had it one week, but am impressed. It wasn't hard to set up at all. It prints from anywhere in the house, and does a very good job. This is my third Epson printer, and they just get better.

Excellent Photo Printer with a couple caveats

Fantastic photo printer. I was blown away by the quality of the prints, leaving my Cannon Pro 100 in the dust ! There is enough ink in the bottles to refill the tanks after setup and printing a few 13x19 photos so this is definitely a huge savings. BUT.,, it is disgraceful that this printer does not automatically align the printheads and, in my case, there were ZERO perfect alignments to choose from on the calibration printouts. That said, it did not seem to have an ill effect on the end result. Individual print settings are difficult to impossible as access to all settings seems to be highly dependent on software compatibility. Try to print often to avoid clogging of the printheads. Mine was idle for 5-6 days and required 3 cleanings after ruining 3 sheets of photo paper before I noticed. Last night it failed to grab paper from the rear feed, made a grinding sound, and threw a paper jam error, however, there was no paper jam. I reset the printer and it was OK after, so, that is of some concern. Bottom line, the printer just sips ink and prints a fantastic image but is way more difficult to use than any other printer I have ever owned. It seems I'm constantly having to go to the printer to change a setting or to change the tray or approve a feed or even just approve a print job or to cancel because it decided to revert to the front tray or some other reason. My LOVE for this this printer quickly faded to LIKE. Sadly, were it not for the fantastic print quality, I would hate this printer.

My many years old R2000 finally gave up on me after sitting idle for a short time. Could not get refillable cartridges check valves to seal . I gave up and bought another Ecotank, as I am so pleased with my 8500. So far, after printing quite a few 13x19s in high quality setting, the ink levels have not moved much at all. I'm very pleased with the ET8550 , and it's quite the ink miser, while still turning out great prints.

I had to wait several months while the 8550 was subject to supply chain delays. So glad I did. This technological breakthrough in inkjet printing is revolutionary. Users with decades of experience making print can't stop raving about how printing images is now FUN. I gave away my prior pro-level printer and I'm glad I did. My single complaint is that the 2021 print driver build omitted the Ultra Premium Presentation Paper Matte from the driver's "Paper Type" print setup selection. This paper choice is widely referenced for use with Fine Arts quality papers. Whether it was a conscious decision due to its all-in-one status or inadvertent omission, the driver should be revisited and add this paper setup. Thank you.

Large format bliss

My wife and I have two young boys. We have prints throughout the house and primarily relied on local clink and print solutions - Costco, drugstores, etc. That has become an increasingly difficult option as these businesses are de-prioritizing or cutting these services. Enter Epson. I can print most of the frame opening sizes I need, the EcoTank setup makes the cost manageable, I no longer curse HP and their incredibly frustrating print cartridges (I used a printer exclusively for home/office use prior to this and always dealt with unused color cartridges drying up and preventing me from printing black and white documents). This printer and its approach to ink has me excited about printing - and that is definitely as weird for me to say as it is for you to read I imagine. If you're on the fence, consider the 8500 that's cheaper/smaller, but don't pass on the EcoTank technology, it's amazing.

Yes the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500 and all other inkjet printers will occasionally need to run a nozzle check pattern and/or cleaning cycle to clear any possible clogs.

I am most interested in making black and white prints. Will this print real grays w/o purple or green tints?

Yes the Epson ET-8550 can print black and white without a color cast. However, it only has 1 gray ink. In my opinion the Epson P700 produces better quality black and white prints because it has 2 grays plus it uses archival pigment inks. The paper size "11x14" is not available as a paper setting in Photo+. How do I print 11x14 prints?

With the Photo+ application some sizes will not be available depending on what frame you have chosen in the application. Try changing or removing the frame and you should be able to print 11x14" with the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 All-in-One Supertank Printer.

Yes, the output tray extends automatically and retracts from the touch screen. with power off it can be moved manually against some resistance. The instruction sheet with the printer says that is normal and will not hurt the printer
