Epson ET-8550 Overview

Print everything from everyday documents to lab-quality photos and graphics with the EcoTank Photo ET-8550 Wireless Color All-in-One Supertank Printer from Epson. Featuring an economical cartridge-free printing system, this printer offers low-cost replacement ink bottles without sacrificing print quality. Each replacement ink bottle set is equivalent to approximately 100 individual ink cartridges. The ET-8550 lets you print everything from 3.5 x 5" to 13 x 19" borderless photos to customized CDs and DVDs. A six-color Claria ET Premium Ink system delivers vibrant colors and sharp text for all your creative projects, and you can even print on cardstock and other media up to 1.3mm thick.

A 4.3" color touchscreen offers fast and easy performance and voice-activated printing is supported as well. Mobile-ready, you can print, scan, and more with the Epson Smart Panel app, which lets you monitor and operate your printer directly from your iOS or Android mobile device. Additionally, a SD card slot and USB port are provided for direct printing. For scanning, an 8.5 x 14" flatbed scanner delivers high-resolution scans up to 4800 x 1200 dpi, and the unit lets you make up to 99 copies at a time.

I've had the printer for two weeks now, which is a good thing because my Pro-100 died one week ago. The ET8550 does everything the Pro-100 did, but better. The ink is of better quality from Epson verses the ink I have been using from Precision Color. Longevity is much better. Longer panoramas, 75 inches vs 25 inches on the pro-100. I think I read somewhere on the internet that when you get a new printer, all your favorite papers are different now. But a real plus is that there are many papers that have profiles for the ET-8500/8550. Also a plus for me, no more filling and refilling cartridges for the pro-100. As it turns out the bottled ink for the Epson et-8550 is close in price to the third-party inks. And much more convenient. I've printed about 40 8.5x11 and 13x17 prints and the ink levels have hardly moved. encouraging! So, that's a lot of words to say I really like the printer so far.

Epson has had some variable quality of their consumer level printers in recent years. The old days when you could count on an Epson inkjet printer to be excellent in all ways, are gone. This EcoTank ET-8550 is a decent reliable printer in my 2 year experience with it. The large volume ink refills are certainly much, much less expensive than the old little cartridges. The build quality of the machine seems pretty good to me; some of the pieces could be easily broken if you're trying to break them - simple fix is don't abuse the printer and treat it like a computer device, not a lawnmower. I have a lot of experience with the different Epson inkjet systems. Using the dye based CMYK ink sets, there's nothing better than the original Claria Photo HD ink, which was Cyan, Light Cyan, Magenta, Light Magenta, Yellow, and Black. That ink system remains unmatched in color fidelity and overall print quality. The EcoTank printers use variations of CMYK dye inks, with adequate but not exceptional results. The ET-8550 uses Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and three blacks. The color is OK; not good enough for professionals or artists, but fine for phone pictures and random prints. The black lasts a very long time and could be used as a substitute for a laser printer if needed. The advantages of this printer - it seems well built compared to the range of Epson printers, and on the upper end of consumer home printers. It is quiet and economical in operation, and it doesn't seem prone to clogged nozzles on the print head. It's most comfortable using ordinary office paper or generic photo paper in typical sizes. It is capable of printing on specialty papers and wide paper up to 13x19 inches. I haven't attempted any 13x19 prints; I imagine it's rather fussy with that size and probably needs help with paper handling. Overall I'm happy to own and use this printer within the limitations of what it's designed to do - economical printing of ordinary or typical home printing tasks. If I need something other than that, I use a different printer.

Yes the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500 and all other inkjet printers will occasionally need to run a nozzle check pattern and/or cleaning cycle to clear any possible clogs.

I am most interested in making black and white prints. Will this print real grays w/o purple or green tints?

Yes the Epson ET-8550 can print black and white without a color cast. However, it only has 1 gray ink. In my opinion the Epson P700 produces better quality black and white prints because it has 2 grays plus it uses archival pigment inks. The 14.9 inch depth for the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 All-in-One Supertank Printer does not factor in the power cord. The 20.6 x 14.9 x 6.7" / 52.3 x 37.8 x 17 cm size is for storage and the cord can be removed before storing. When in use it is 29.8 x 20.6 x 16.9" / 75.7 x 52.3 x 42.9 cm (Fully Assembled).
