SmallRig mini Follow Focus Overview

Add an adjustable, manual follow focus unit to your rig with this Mini Follow Focus from SmallRig. The follow focus assembly is made up of a focus knob, a 15mm rod clamp with NATO rail, a 6" long 15mm rod, an 0.8 MOD/43T gear, and an adjustable, belt-style focus gear ring. The fluid knob movement ensures smooth focus control, and AB hard stops ensure precision adjustment to match your lens.

The follow focus mounts onto the 15mm rod, and its rod clamp also features a built-in NATO rail for alternate mounting options. It is designed to be mounted on the left side of your lens. The focus knob is designed to be anti-slip by preventing moisture. One 0.8 MOD gear is included and can be swapped out for optional gears with different configurations such as 0.8 MOD/65T and 0.8 MOD/38T. Very easy to install and feels smooth. Definitely a great tool for video.

Just used this on a music video and I was pretty impressed, only thing is that you gotta make sure you get it tight on the bar because it does seem to pop off the lens sometimes, but if you get it on tight enough it won't move.

Surprisingly Good

I wasn't expecting much of this follow focus given the low price but have been very pleased with the quality of other Smallrig accessories so I thought I would give it a try. This a is a very nice, well made follow focus. I was worried that it would come loose since it only clamps to one rod but so far it holds tight and stays put. The gears are very smooth with very little backlash (play in the gears). In fact it is better in this regard than my Arri SR follow focus that cost 5 times as much used. The stops to limit focus rotation work well and are easy to use. There are 2 disadvantages to this that I can see. First of all the marking disc is not removeable so you can't get extra discs and mark them for different lenses and swap them out as many camera assistants like to do. If you want to do this look elsewhere. Second you can't reposition the witness mark so if you disengage the gears you may need to make your focus marks over again. This is best used with Cine lenses with clear easy to read marks so you don't have to spend time marking the disc with multiple distances each time you change lenses. If you can see your focus marks well and just need a simple follow focus without interchangeable discs this is a good one and is very affordable.

I have a few follow-focus options but picked this one up to have the convenience of it being far lighter and the ease of mounting it upside down (mainly for Nikon lenses to keep a consistent focus direction). I wasn't too impressed with the feel first out of the box. This won't do you any favors on tension or smooth racking if your lens is too tight or too loose. I planned on returning it but was going to be charged about 10% of the price for shipping, so I'll likely keep it in my kit. However, the simple system for focus stops is nice and can't beat how light and small it is.

Very well built! My eyes aren't what they used to be and I need more help making sure objects are in focus. This enables me to be sure my subjects are in sharp focus. Works well from both left and right of lens. Be sure you buy the seamless gear rings for your lenses - they're so much easier than the gear ring that comes with. The latch is alway getting in the way!

Will it work with BMPCC 6k pro with battery grip attached to it? I bought a decent follow focus from Amazon but it doesn't reach the ring with bottom 15mm rail.
Asked by: Mahin
It depends on which cage you are using. The Kondor Blue Battery Grip Cage for BMPCC 6K Pro raises the 15mm rod clamps to combat this issue.

I see in photo number 5 the focus gear is on opposite sides. Thus allowing for reverse and double sided operation. Left and Right side, Front and Back positions?
Asked by: Joe
The metal cap on the opposite side of the focus wheel pulls off -- not twist, pull. That design aspect isn't exactly intuitive nor have I seen anywhere that clearly illustrates it. I also struggled with this until seeing it demonstrated in this video: https://youtu.be/CeLxX3ojF5Y?t=204
