Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S Overview

Reveal hidden worlds and thrilling details with the NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S Macro Lens from Nikon. This S-line macro lens provides a versatile 105mm focal length, a close working distance, and a true 1:1 reproduction ratio. It fills the frame with the edge-to-edge sharpness and exquisite color. Whether you're shooting wedding details, jewelry, food, flowers, products, nature, wildlife, or portraits, this professional lens takes your vision into the extraordinary.

The lens features a minimum focusing distance of 11.4" to suit working with close-up subjects, and a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture lets you confidently work in low-light conditions. A Dual-Motor Multi-Focus STM System with manual focus override provides fast and responsive autofocus, and this unique multi-focus system also reduces chromatic aberration and color fringing common among macro lenses. A VR image-stabilization system minimizes the appearance of camera shake by 4.5 stops for shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions, and an integrated OLED lens information panel allows you to quickly confirm aperture setting, focus distance, and depth of field figures right on the lens in both bright and dark situations. Nano Crystal and ARNEO coatings prevent ghosting, flare, and reflections when working in brightly illuminated and backlit scenes, and a single aspherical lens element minimizes coma, distortion, and other types of lens aberrations when using wide aperture settings. Additionally, a fluorine coating prevents dirt, water, and smudges from sticking to the surface of the lens.

  • Telephoto prime designed for FX-format Nikon Z-mount cameras, however, can also be used with DX models where it provides a 157.5mm equivalent focal length.
  • Ideal for macro and portrait shooting, this lens offers a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 11.4" to suit working with close-up subjects.
  • Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in a variety of lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects and using selective focus techniques.
  • Integrated OLED lens information panel allows you to quickly confirm aperture setting, focus distance, and depth of field figures right on the lens in both bright and dark situations.
  • Dual-Motor Multi-Focus STM System with manual focus override for fast and responsive autofocus. Multi-focus system also reduces chromatic aberration and color fringing common among macro lenses.
  • Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism in the lens barrel provides highly accurate aperture blade control when using auto exposure during continuous shooting.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm creates beautifully artistic background blur and bokeh.
  • VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake by 4.5 stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
  • Customizable control ring for changing aperture, exposure compensation, and ISO.
  • L-Fn button for customization and 11.4 to 19.7" / 0.29 to 0.5m limiter switch for close focusing.
  • Nano Crystal Coating eliminates internal lens element reflections and effectively reduces ghosting and flare caused by light entering the lens diagonally.
  • ARNEO antireflective coating used in conjunction with Nano Crystal Coating further reduces ghosting and flare effects caused by incident light entering the lens vertically. Helpful for backlit scenes, this allows outstandingly clear capture of images even when a light source is located within the frame.
  • Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
  • Aspherical lens element minimizes coma, distortion, and other types of lens aberrations when using wide aperture settings.
  • Fluorine coating prevents dirt, water, and smudges from sticking to the surface of the lens.
  • Lightweight design for easy and comfortable carrying.

THIS S LENS IS INCREDIBLY SHARP, LIGHTWEIGHT, AND A JOY TO USE. ITS ABILITY TO FUNCTION AS A MACRO LENS AS WELL AS A PORTRAIT LENS MAKES IT A GO-TO LENS FOR ALMOST ALL OCCASIONS. I HAVE FOUR OTHER NIKKOR S LENSES AND THIS IS A WONDERFUL ADDITION.

Fantastic Macro and Portrait Lens

I have had this lens for roughly three weeks and it has exceeded my expectations. The sharpness is incredible. I love the focus limit switch, manual/autofocus switch, and the customizable ring on the lens. I currently use the ring to change the aperture. This is my first Macro Capable lens in over 35 years of photography and the first thing that shocked me was how close I could get to the subject. Focusing: As long as you use the focusing limit switch the focusing is fast and accurate. I use single-point control to tell the lens where to focus when using AF and taking macro shots. There are times when I prefer to manually focus the lens which is why the AF/MF switch is fantastic.

It's good but not exemplary

I use the F mount 105 for many years and love it, so i have high expectation of this Z mount version. The lens is sharp, great, its big but surprisingly light, great, the focus speed for a macro is good and silent, great, the display of focusing distance is useful, great, the by wire manual focus ring is not super responding, disappointing, the minimum focus distance can be a bit closer, ok, focusing breathing affects focus stacking, disappointing and built quality does not match the F mount, average. So, its a good lens but not mile ahead of using your existing F mount 105 with FTZ adapter.

Love this lens. Super sharp images, and light and easy to carry. It's a great focal length for a lot of use cases, and really like using in macro mode.

Well worth the money for close-ups and for portraits

My macro lenses (before this 105MC) consist of the older Nikon 105/2.8 AF-D Micro, a Tamron 90/2.8 SP Macro, and a Nikon 60/2.8G AFS. I also extensively use the super wonderful Nikon 105/1.4E for portraits. I found myself needing a 105mm Micro that can AF because I never had the 105/2.8G AFS Micro. I recently picked up this Nikon Z MC 105/2.8 VR S (105 MC for short) and have tested it as a macro lens for over a couple hundred of pictures and scenarios (eg. close ups of flowers) and I am most pleasantly surprised at how sharp this lens is and the AF is very smooth and accurate. I was not sure how this lens would be as a portrait lens since my standard is the Nikon 105/1.4 E. What I can say is this: this 105 MC can definitely compete with the 105 E for portraiture. No, it can not replace the 105E because there are situations where I would want the wider aperture of 1.4 while this MC is only a 2.8. Having said that, I would not hesitate to use this Z 105 MC for portraits, for most of the times. Summary: this Z 105MC is definitely worth the money. It excels as a micro 105 lens and it performs splendidly as a portrait lens, rivalling the famous 105E for most situations, except for those more specific use cases where the 105E is still the best there is.
