Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Ultra-wide and stabilized, the Canon RF 14-35mm f/4 L IS USM is a uniquely versatile zoom characterize by its broad range, constant f/4 maximum aperture, and advanced optical design. Gaining a bit on the wide end, this zoom offers a broader field of view to suit landscape, nature, and architectural applications, and its modest maximum aperture also contributes to a sleek, highly portable design for walkaround shooting.

In terms of optics, the lens is befitting of its L-series designation and features three aspherical elements and three UD elements that produce a highly corrected image with high sharpness and accurate color rendering. A trio of unique coatings have also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting throughout the zoom rang. The L-series designation is also indicative of a robust physical design, and this 14-35mm is weather-sealed and features a fluorine coating on the exposed elements for further protection against trying weather conditions.

Unique among ultra-wides, this lens is also distinguished by its Optical Image Stabilizer that compensates for up to 5.5 stops of camera shake, or up to 7 stops when paired with cameras featuring IBIS. Additionally, there is also an apt Nano USM that yields fast and quiet autofocus performance and there is a minimum focusing distance of just 7.9" throughout the entire zoom range for creative wide-angle close-up shooting.

Wide-angle zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by 5.5 stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
Up to 7 stops of correction when used on EOS R-series cameras with In-Body Image Stabilization.
Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and nearly silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.

Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM Reviews

So Far, So Good

I did a quick test when it first arrived and overall I am pleased. The edges go a bit soft, but at 14 mm it is to be expected. Much of that can be easily corrected by using the lens profile in Lightroom .

Another winner from Canon

Coming from the EF version this lens is very similar. I like the smaller size and the extra 2mm on the wide end is nice to have. IS performance is also improved. Image quality is great as expected.

As good as any other L Lenses

Sharp and nice color just like any other L lenses. Focuses very close. It is not macro but good for flowers and any other larger objects. Uncorrected, there is significant vignetting. Once correction is applied, there is no problem. I do not mind the uncorrected image as I often like to crop to 16:9. The vignetting is off the image and I get a view wider than 14mm. It is ok for some of the shots I take. One negative is there is significant lens breathing.

Wide Angle Zoom is SHARP

I have only used a few fixed focal length wide angle lens, first in film and then in digital and have been leery of a wide angle zoom. This lens is quiet and fast, but also has some vignetting in the wider focal settings. But with the lens corrections in DPP the shadows in the corners are corrected, amazing! This is one sharp lens for a wide angle, and the f4 is very light and easy to carry around. Great for videos of the kids as well.

Great Lens

Up front, I am not a professional, but I am a SERIOUS photographer. I have been doing this for 35+ years and when I take a photo I look at the results without the fine print JUST the quality of the photo, this lens does its job ++++. The photos are great, I personally do not see the imperfections in all the professional reviews. I may not be the perfectionist and unless I look with a magnifier I do not appreciate the imperfections. Bottom line to the regular photographer, it's a GREAT lens.

Nice lens with shortcomings

I bought this to replace my EF 16-35 f/4L, as I'm now using an EOS R5. Having read several excellent reviews and trying a friend's 14-35, I had an idea of what to expect, and the reality matches. The good: Excellent range of angle-of-view, light, compact, and good-to-excellent image quality at all FLs. The not-so-good: As reviewers said, the lens vignettes at the short end and is my softest L-lens at the long end. The images look fine until they're viewed at half-size or larger magnification. It's unfortunate that Canon's design decisions/tradeoffs resulted in these shortcomings. Also, interestingly, the FoV at 14mm is noticeably narrower than with my EF 14 f/2.8 L (II). I think this is mostly the result of default lens correction (cropping) done by processing apps like Lightroom and Capture One, but of course I can't be sure. The redeeming: Imaging shortcomings can generally be overcome in post with a bit of effort. Bottom line: I don't know of a lens that can do what this lens does, and it's a good complement to the RF 24-105L; just be prepared to do a bit of extra processing to pull L quality from this lens.

Amazing wide angle lens

This is my first RF lens as I've been using adapted EF glass for the longest time. So fast, autofocus is FAST, and it's so much lighter. Also noticed it to feel more compact compared to adapted EF glass, feels way more balanced. Love using the wide side for landscapes and the 35 side for portraits. F4 is plenty Docking it a star because the first time I ordered it came with a loud focusing noise, but the next one works perfect.

Beautiful Colors

Not only is this lens beautifully crafted and wonderfully ergonomic, it's colors and sharpness are beautiful. It is heavily distorted and vignetted at 14, but totally correctable without losing any of the framing. Replaced my canon EFL 15 -35. F4I S with it and will not look back. Now that the price came down, it seems like a lens worth the money.
