Blending classic looks with modern performance, the Nikon Zfc checks off all the boxes on a content creator's wish list: stylish and sleek retro design, impressive image quality with the Z mirrorless system flexibility, and it's optimized for vlogging and video applications.

The Zfc is a DX-format mirrorless camera sporting a 20.9MP CMOS sensor, which pairs with EXPEED 6 image processing to realize quick shooting performance up to 11 fps, UHD 4K video recording at 30p, and sensitivity up to ISO 51200. Despite its classic looks, this camera is updated for contemporary content creation and features a fully articulating touchscreen LCD, supports live streaming, is compatible with external microphones, and has an advanced 209-point AF system with full-time subject tracking and eye-detection AF.

Focusing on the physical design, the Zfc stands out as a clear reference to Nikon's classic SLR film camera heritage, and features several familiar physical controls on the body, including dedicated dials to adjust ISO, shutter speed, and exposure compensation. The body also features a 2.36m-dot OLED EVF and supports SnapBridge wireless connectivity for pairing with a mobile device for remote camera control. Also benefitting on-location shoots and longer takes, the Zfc also supports in-camera battery charging and on-the-go power via the USB C port.

20.9MP DX-Format CMOS Sensor and EXPEED 6 Image Processor
The DX-format 20.9MP CMOS sensor is paired with the EXPEED 6 image processor to provide a versatile mixture of high sensitivity, nuanced image quality, and fast overall performance. At native values, a sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200 permits working in a broad array of lighting conditions, and can be further expanded up to ISO 204800 for extreme low-light conditions. The mixture of resolution and sensor size also contributes to clean image quality and smooth color transitions with reduced noise throughout the sensitivity range. In addition to benefitting image quality, the EXPEED 6 processor also affords a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including a top full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 11 fps.

Besides imaging, the sensor's design also incorporates a 209-point hybrid autofocus system, which uses both phase-detection and contrast-detection methods to quickly and accurately acquire focus for both stills and video applications. This focusing system also supports Eye Detection AF, which uses facial recognition to help lock focus onto subjects' eyes.
UHD 4K Video Recording
Capable of recording more than just stills, the Zfc supports UHD 4K video recording at up to 30 fps and Full HD recording at up to 120 fps, for slow-motion effects, along with the ability to save movie files to the in-camera memory card. In-camera time-lapse shooting is also possible.
Heritage Design with Intuitive Functions
Precision carved aluminum dials with engraved markings and mechanical controls for shutter speed, ISO, and exposure compensation. Intuitive functions also enable easy access to auto mode, quick settings, and the menu help guide.
Body Design and Connectivity
  • A large 3" 1.04m-dot LCD screen is available for bright, clear, and vivid image playback and live view shooting. The screen has a vari-angle design, which benefits front-facing selfie captures, and it is also a touchscreen for more intuitive operation, navigation, and settings control.
  • A 2.36m-dot electronic finder is present for comfortable eye-level viewing. It has a 1.02x magnification and uses NIKKOR optics to guarantee a sharp, clear image.
  • A robust magnesium alloy chassis is both dust- and weather-resistant to benefit working in harsh climates and inclement conditions.
  • Built-in SnapBridge connectivity to enable seamless transfer of low-resolution imagery as well as remote shooting capabilities. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi enables communication between the camera and a smart device and, additionally, the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter and display a live view image from the camera to enable working from a distance.
  • Live streaming and web conferencing via separately purchased USB Type-C cable.
  • 3.5mm stereo mini-pin jack provides plug-in power
  • Included EN-EL25 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 300 shots per charge.
  • Compatible with NIKKOR Z lenses as well as F-mount lenses using the separately purchased FTZ Mount Adapter.

Nikon Zfc Reviews

Great camera for doing a little bit of everything.

I'm relatively new to photography/videography. Having the control dials on top has really helped a lot with learning photography in general. Rather than hunting through menus or using presets/auto, It's forced me to think about the outcome of my settings. In the audio world I favor control surfaces for mixing and this is that same vibe. I'm pleased with this camera and I appreciate BH for helping me make a better buying decision.

Sometimes I just want a lighter load

I am planning a trip to Italy in the fall and wanted an easy-to-carry camera that I can drop in a purse instead of the 20 lb bag of gear I'd take on a photo safari to Africa. Being a Nikon user, and lover of a retro-look camera, this fit the bill. It is lightweight, fun to use, and the images so far are great. I am using the 16-50 kit lens and also purchased the new 26 f/2.8 lens which I know will be useful for shooting interiors of churches and such do to the faster speed. This camera makes me feel much less conspicuous than I feel lugging my D780 and 24-120 lens and will be my go-to for street photography. This is also my intro to mirrorless and it is giving me the bug to make the full leap. The only con is the lack of grip, so I added on a Smallrig hand grip which feel like it was born to be there.

Plasticky body with no weather seal component

Almost attempted buy this nice design looks , more like my old Nikon FE-2 body ,but not durable body - plastic bottom surfaces , I'm very picky to choose body design other manufacturer ( Fuji xt-5 ,xh2 xh1 ) are all metal body with weather proof seal , Nikon made camera for last 70 years now decreasing quality , camera body is very important more then lens ( z lens are also lot of plastic units) ,I'm choosing Z5 instead - metal body with image stabilizer, weather sealing , two card slots , never buy ZFC camera. ( I already have Fuji systems ) Viltrox 13 mm and 75 mm are top performance product. ,all metal body lens . Hopefully next zfc v2 will be change soon .

Cheap Plasticky Feel

By John

Having photographed with so many different cameras, including both 35mm film and digital, I never could have imagined how cheap this camera would feel in my hands. I had read reviews about this prior to purchasing the camera, but I didn't believe them. Once I received the camera, I took it out of the box and discovered that those reviewers were right. I felt like I was holding a plastic toy camera purchased at a yard sale for a dollar or two. This is the first time I've ever returned a camera without shooting a single frame. I'm sure the IQ of the camera is great, but I can't get past the cheap physical feel of the camera body. Nikon missed the mark on this one and I'm returning it.

Perfect Compact Camera!

I have been doing photography personally for years, learned on a Nikon disorder and currently own, love and use the Nikon d850. I also used Fuji for almost 2 years as my compact camera and loved my x-pro3. I recently sold my Fuji and some of the lenses and thought I could stay with the 850. I quickly realized the size and workflow not what I was use to with Fuji nor the experience. The x-t5 is being announced today and the Fuji I was going to get is out of stock so on a whim, this one was available and had great reviews, specs I wanted so decided to try it. I am a manual shooter, love the dials and retro look. I have a collection of older Nikon cameras including a film fm10 that I am also currently using. This camera looks a lot like it. I'm happy to say I love it. It's small it's light and allows me to be creative as I want or flip it in any kind of auto mode for my grandkids, my pets and can much easier go with me with them. My favorite thing I really struggled with is the difference in menus and going back and forth between systems. I never fully got use to it and it frustrated me. With this one it's seamless going back and forth between cameras. A few weeks ago I hiked up a mountain with my husband and pup and the Nikon d850. While the pictures are beautiful, not the experience I wanted. The zfc is much more practical for things like this. The other last thing I expected that I love was my granddaughter (8 years old) wanted to take pictures and I already had it set up and she had no issues and took beautiful pictures. I'm not saying it's better or worse than Fuji or anything else but for what I needed and how I shoot, it's perfect!

I bought this for work to record short videos and take a few other random photos. It works wonderfully. I am not a pro photographer, but I definitely recommend this camera.

A lot of great uses here

I purchases the Nikon Zfc as a second camera to my Nikon Z6; primarily for blogging videos, and as a camera to take around on hikes with my significant other. Having a screen that fully articulates to face front is a game changer. No longer do I have to use the finicky app to see myself from my phone. It's also great for taking couple selfies. Having dials on the top reminds me of old film cameras, and I find it incredibly useful because I often shoot in Manual mode, and love being able to control ISO from a dial. You really can't go wrong with this camera. That being said, this is not a top-grade professional camera, and you'll notice that in certain areas, none of which were a deal breaker for me. Basically, I wouldn't go and shoot a wedding with this camera as my only camera, but who would? It's not designed for that, and lacks redundant card slots, etc. It fits a certain niche perfectly, either as a second camera if you do a lot of blogging, or simply love the function and feel of older film cameras.
