Nikon Zfc Overview

  • 1Description

  • 3UHD 4K Video Recording
  • 4Heritage Design with Intuitive Functions
  • 5Body Design and Connectivity

Blending classic looks with modern performance, the Nikon Zfc checks off all the boxes on a content creator's wish list: stylish and sleek retro design, impressive image quality with the Z mirrorless system flexibility, and it's optimized for vlogging and video applications.

The Zfc is a DX-format mirrorless camera sporting a 20.9MP CMOS sensor, which pairs with EXPEED 6 image processing to realize quick shooting performance up to 11 fps, UHD 4K video recording at 30p, and sensitivity up to ISO 51200. Despite its classic looks, this camera is updated for contemporary content creation and features a fully articulating touchscreen LCD, supports live streaming, is compatible with external microphones, and has an advanced 209-point AF system with full-time subject tracking and eye-detection AF.

Focusing on the physical design, the Zfc stands out as a clear reference to Nikon's classic SLR film camera heritage, and features several familiar physical controls on the body, including dedicated dials to adjust ISO, shutter speed, and exposure compensation. The body also features a 2.36m-dot OLED EVF and supports SnapBridge wireless connectivity for pairing with a mobile device for remote camera control. Also benefitting on-location shoots and longer takes, the Zfc also supports in-camera battery charging and on-the-go power via the USB C port.

20.9MP DX-Format CMOS Sensor and EXPEED 6 Image Processor

The DX-format 20.9MP CMOS sensor is paired with the EXPEED 6 image processor to provide a versatile mixture of high sensitivity, nuanced image quality, and fast overall performance. At native values, a sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200 permits working in a broad array of lighting conditions, and can be further expanded up to ISO 204800 for extreme low-light conditions. The mixture of resolution and sensor size also contributes to clean image quality and smooth color transitions with reduced noise throughout the sensitivity range. In addition to benefitting image quality, the EXPEED 6 processor also affords a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including a top full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 11 fps.

Besides imaging, the sensor's design also incorporates a 209-point hybrid autofocus system, which uses both phase-detection and contrast-detection methods to quickly and accurately acquire focus for both stills and video applications. This focusing system also supports Eye Detection AF, which uses facial recognition to help lock focus onto subjects' eyes.

UHD 4K Video Recording

Capable of recording more than just stills, the Zfc supports UHD 4K video recording at up to 30 fps and Full HD recording at up to 120 fps, for slow-motion effects, along with the ability to save movie files to the in-camera memory card. In-camera time-lapse shooting is also possible.

Heritage Design with Intuitive Functions

Precision carved aluminum dials with engraved markings and mechanical controls for shutter speed, ISO, and exposure compensation. Intuitive functions also enable easy access to auto mode, quick settings, and the menu help guide.

Body Design and Connectivity

  • A large 3" 1.04m-dot LCD screen is available for bright, clear, and vivid image playback and live view shooting. The screen has a vari-angle design, which benefits front-facing selfie captures, and it is also a touchscreen for more intuitive operation, navigation, and settings control.
  • A 2.36m-dot electronic finder is present for comfortable eye-level viewing. It has a 1.02x magnification and uses NIKKOR optics to guarantee a sharp, clear image.
  • A robust magnesium alloy chassis is both dust- and weather-resistant to benefit working in harsh climates and inclement conditions.
  • Built-in SnapBridge connectivity to enable seamless transfer of low-resolution imagery as well as remote shooting capabilities. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi enables communication between the camera and a smart device and, additionally, the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter and display a live view image from the camera to enable working from a distance.
  • Live streaming and web conferencing via separately purchased USB Type-C cable.
  • 3.5mm stereo mini-pin jack provides plug-in power
  • Included EN-EL25 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 300 shots per charge.
  • Compatible with NIKKOR Z lenses as well as F-mount lenses using the separately purchased FTZ Mount Adapter.

Did I need this camera, absolutely not. I currently have a D750 as my main camera, a D5300 as an extra back up, and my old D300 just because I can't bear to part with it. I purchased this camera because it looks just like my Nikon FE2 that I shot for 20 years and dearly loved. This camera is plain fun to shoot and I love the retro look. The fact that it takes great pictures is certainly a plus. I have not delved into the mirrorless world, but I admit it seems to be the wave of the future. I am slowly getting used to the electronic viewfinder and find it just fine. Having used Nikon DSLR cameras since my first D100, it takes no time to figure out this one. I just got the camera a few week ago and have not really shot much with it (just the dog and a few spring flower pics) but plan on using it a lot to shoot my grandkids and maybe as a travel camera. The 16-50mm metal lens just adds to the retro look and is quite a good lens. I am the person whom this camera was designed for and I love it. Fun to use, great picture quality, and good looking.

Simply great

I got this camera on a whim, just because I thought it looked cool, and really didn't expect to like it. I've now taken over 10k pictures with it, and was totally wrong. I love it. With a magnesium chassis, and aluminum dials, it's not just about the looks. It really feels like shooting one of the old Nikon film cameras I loved so much. Pair it with a manual focus lens with an aperture ring and set everything to manual and that feeling is complete, but with the immediacy of digital. Or, you can take advantage of all the modern automation if the situation calls for it. I usually use manual shutter speed and aperture with auto-ISO unless I'm looking for a specific effect that the camera wont let me get with that (like the fishermen at sunset, below). I've shot a lot of wildlife and sports with it, and with those settings, rarely miss a shot. I find the autofocus quick enough for anything I want to shoot. If I miss something, it's usually because I didn't get the camera pointed in the right direction fast enough. I have the Z-mount 16-50, 18-140, 50-250, and 24-200, all of which are stellar, as well as the 200-500, which is great with the FTZ II adapter. I did get the Small Rig grip, which helps a lot when using the big lens. Image quality is excellent, in my estimation. I do my best to keep the ISO as low as the situation allows, but images are usually acceptable, even at high ISO. I highly recommend this camera.

Very easy to use

I am a very beginner in photography and my photographer recommends me to purchase this camera. I am not a professional one so my review could be very superficial and might be judged by professional photographers. But this would probably help someone who starts their photography path with this camera, especially someone who just know a little about camera like me. My current level is limited to ISO and shutter only. I was first impressed by its vintage look and I immediately fell in love with it as it could be a really beautiful decoration in my house even if I don't use it. It's small and not heavy. Just one hand can hold it tight without shaking. It could be put into my coat pocket as well. Personally, I would prefer something tiny and light because that's one of the motivations for me to use it. Otherwise, I might just take my cell phone out and this camera would be a waste. Another I love about is the lock of ISO and shutter button when I am in manual mode. My hands are big and usually it is super easy to mistouch the buttons when I take pictures and the overall setting is ruined. But the lock solves the problem. The screen could be flipped over for protection purpose (for example, dust). This camera also equips with a 28mm f/2.8 lens when I purchased it and it solves another problem for me as I have no idea what kind of lens I should choose. I love the manual filters and different focuses setting as well. Overall is great so far when I take pictures. I think I will continue using it until I reach higher level in photography. I will recommend it to fresh and total beginners.

Just what I wanted

I love this camera -- I traded in my old DSLR because I wanted something smaller and lighter, but that still had the option for interchangeable lenses.

Great for everyday use

We all know this isn't your next wedding camera, but I was looking for something smaller, lighter, and frankly 'prettier' for everyday use, street photography, and documenting family moments of higher quality than a smartphone. I love the manual dials and vintage feel but with the benefits of digital, and the flip-out touch screen is significantly more intuitive than alternative flip-ups I've used before like the Fuji XT-10. One feature I was not expecting but absolutely love is the automatic downloads for quick posting to blogs or social where quality is not imperative due to platform compression. I was walking around NYC, reached a coffee shop, and everything I shot was already transferred to my phone - ready for some slight corrections and then set for posting. It's a small feature but saves a lot of time knowing it's happening in the background. The remote control feature of the app is also easy to use and better/faster than some others that I've used. The JPEG color presets are great for someone who just needs some quick effects that can be tuned for social, but the RAW images are great, too. I got the body with the 40mm F2.0 and am fairly pleased. Sharpness is good and bokeh is reasonably smooth for the price point. No manual aperture on the lens but easy to adjust on the fly with the front dial. All in all, very happy with the purchase!
