Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR Overview

Compact, lightweight, and versatile, the NIKKOR Z DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR, from Nikon, is an all-in-one zoom spanning a wide-angle to telephoto range. Poised to be a single lens solution for travel, walkaround, and everyday shooting, this 27-210mm-equivalent lens is ideal for applications ranging from landscapes to portraiture to distant, fast-moving subjects.

Helping achieve sharp results and steady handling, Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for up to 5 stops of camera shake for improved results when working in low-light conditions. A stepping motor provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, and there is a 7.9" minimum focusing distance for working with close-up subjects. Also, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

All-in-one zoom is designed for DX-format Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 27-210mm equivalent focal length range.
Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
Minimum focusing distance of 7.9" at the wide-angle position suits working with close-up subjects.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to 5 stops for sharper handheld shooting.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.

Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR Reviews

Great Lens for Z 50

I purchased the DX 18-140 from B&H several months ago and I'm still very happy with the quality and performance of the lens; it's a great investment. On a cruise last month, I used the Z50 exclusively with this lens. The accuracy and sharpness of the photos I took on the ship are excellent. For example, attached is photo of the Statue of Liberty I took under low light and a moving ship.

Perfect (almost) choice for the Z50

I bought the Z50 with the normal kit lens, the 16-50mm, which is - OK. This lens is a big improvement and, to my mind, is the ideal lens to keep on the Z50 pretty much all the time. For as light and compact as it is, the focal range is very versatile and the image quality is surprisingly good. It'd be nice if it had an image stabilizer switch, but aside from that it seems like the ideal companion to any APS-C Nikon camera.

Bought for a carry around lens. Works great.

Don't let the plastic lens mount dissuade you.

I had some initial hesitation about this lens as well as the 16-50mm due to the plastic lens mount. Now that I've used them both for a while I don't even think about it. Both are very sharp and the light weight is appreciated when carrying around. The VR is excellent and focusing is fast and quiet. The largely plastic construction keeps both the weight and cost down and is plenty sturdy. Really the only downside to the lens is that it is relatively slow in terms of f-stop. As is always the case, if it were faster it would be heavier, larger, and much more expensive. The high ISO capability of the Nikon Z fc I use this on is very good so I just increase the ISO a couple of stops when needed. The range of focal lengths (27-210mm full-frame equivalent), its small size and light weight make it a perfect walk around lens. It also focuses very closely and has nice bokeh when photographing objects on table tops for example. If you don't need the longer focal lengths, the Z 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 really make for a small, light, yet very sharp alternative.

the 18-140 is a perfect complement to the Z50 camera, the two creating an all-in-one combination for travel, and every-day carrying.

Great Lens No Hood

Perfect walking around all purpose zoom for my Z50. Sharp, small and a great match to the similarly small camera body. Only negative is Nikon's decision to sell the hood separately. The camera biz for profits must be driving this sort of cheap decision.

Good lite upgrade for my Z50. Performs well with no concerns. On the Z50 the zoom range is about the same as the 24-200 on one of my full frame bodies.

Can you compare in specs and image quality to the older (2019) Nikkor Z DX 50-250mm F/4.5 VR?
Asked by: Catherine
The difference is only the angle of view. The 18-140 is wider while the 50-250 has a narrower angle of view. Many photographers will use both lenses depending on the situation. For items far away like wildlife the 50-250 is better. For landscape photos, or photos of a group of people in a small room for instance the 18-140 is better.

Is there any reason to get the more expensive full-frame superzoom for my z7ii rather than this?
Asked by: Andy
Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR Lens is a crop lens. Using that lens on the Z7ii will crop the image by 1.5 times. And you loose a lot of resolution.

Does this have VR that works with the Z50 mirrorless which I gather does not have in-camera VR? Is it a 4-5 stop VR?
Asked by: William
According to Nikons announcement: The lens also realizes high vibration reduction (VR) performance with an effect equivalent to a 5.0-stop increase in shutter speed for more stable and sharp photos even during telephoto shooting or in low-light situations where vibration is likely to occur. This value is achieved when attached to a camera with APS-C size sensor, with the cameras VR function set to NORMAL, and when zoom is set to the maximum telephoto position.
