Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DI III-A Overview

The 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD from Tamron is a versatile superzoom ideal for photographers who want an all-rounder that covers virtually any shooting situation. Characterized for its 16.6x zoom ratio and a minimum focus distance of only 5.9", it brings the best of Tamron's "all-in-one" philosophy to the Sony E audience at large. • All-in-one zoom, engineered specifically for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, provides a 27-450mm equivalent focal length range.
  • Tamron's Vibration Compensation uses a free-floating element, controlled through two gyroscopic sensors to measure the horizontal and vertical vibrations and compensate accordingly, eliminating camera shake.
  • Two VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motors deliver impressively quiet, quick, and precise focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. This focusing system offers a minimum focusing distance of 5.9' when fully zoomed out, and a 1:2 maximum magnification ratio at the wide end of the zoom range.

Finally it's available!

This is the perfect lens for someone who doesn't like to change lenses. I love the focal length flexibility. I've used and have Tamron lenses so I know it's made well. I've waited for this lens to be available and then bought the camera. I don't regret my purchase at all.

problems with autofocus

I had serious problems with autofocus. Sometimes the camera would lose it's mind and I had to turn the camera off and on several times. Even then many shots were blurry. Many shots looked fine in the led screen, but were was too soft or blurry on the computer monitor. I had to discard the most of the my shots. It's not up Fujifilm standards. I have 5 other Fujifilm lenses, all of which are better, even the slightly soft 18-135.

A great Kit lens, but image quality and focus are lacking

I had high hopes for this lens, as other Tamron lenses I have are excellent. Incredible range, fairly small and light, but for me it just misses the mark. The edges and corners are soft at most focal lengths, and it focuses poorly at the longer focal lengths, 200mm to 300mm. I was never able to get an image in focus of birds on a rock. The focus seems to be behind the subject. I even shot at 1/1000 of a second to make sure there was no camera movement. It's a great kit and travel lens if image quality and critical focus at the higher mm lengths aren't important to you. It took me a little while to test the lens, and now I've missed the 30-day return window, so look for it on E-Bay.

So far, so good

I've used this mainly at 300mm. While the focus tends to fall off a little at the edges, it isn't horrible. The workmanship is very good for its price range. My only criticism is that the lens is a bit bulky for the smaller body of a mirrorless camera (Fuji X-T30). It makes the balance of the camera tend toward front heavy. But so far, the photos have been very good. Considering the quality for the price, I give this five stars. It's worth having in your arsenal of lenses.

It's what I needed for a long time.

I'm an amateur photographer and I've been using the Fuji 18-55 kit lens for over 2 years. I needed to get in closer shots for my son's soccer matches and so 300mm zoom was attractive for sports action on the field. I am so pleased with this lens and the images it produces.

Great Walk Around Lens

Great lens for travel and walk around when youre not sure just what focal length you'll need. Compact, fairly light though on the XT-4 it makes the camera a bit heavier. Still love having the long length on 300 mm which means 450 mm with crop factor. Would be good for birding and wildlife too. As with most Tamrons the lens is a bit tight in turning...but expect it will loosen with time. Good price and addition to Fuji stable of lenses.

Perfect for traveling

This lens finally came in stock just in time for a trip to Europe. It worked like a charm and kept me from having to change lenses under sometimes challenging conditions. Not as sharp as my Fuji lenses, but perfect for travel photos.

This is potentially the most honest review I've ever written, I really hope you take some time to read and make your decisions from there. I anxiously waited for this lens to come out on B&H for my Fuji X-S10. I do a lot of travel so having the 18-300 range would really take care of the lens switching nuisance many of us have. After months and months of waiting, the lens was finally here and I made the purchase. I had a very brief time with the lens and went out shooting a series of genres, from landscape to wildlife and even lifestyle. As much as it hurts me to say, the lens really failed to meet expectations. I shot a series of focal lengths and only about the 40mm was sharp enough for me. Compared to other lenses I use, this was by far the least sharp. It does save money and covers a wide range of distances. If you're an amateur/occasional photographer maybe it won't make much difference but if you shoot on a frequent basis, I highly recommend looking at other options. I returned the lens for reasons unrelated to its performance but after looking at the shots I got, I choose to invest in something different that I know will match my objectives. Really hope this helps, especially if you were just about to make this purchase.

Body and supplied lens hood are both plastic, but feel reinforced and strong. The lens mount is nicely machined and finished metal (probably chrome or nickel plated brass), and fits my Alpha camera smoothly and as solidly as any Sony manufactured lens.

Will this lens work with a Sony Alpha?
Asked by: dianne
Unfortunately, you did not identify the model camera you own, so I cannot list a full reply concerning the lens' compatibility. That being said, if you are using a Sony Alpha interchangeable lens camera that uses the Sony E-mount and uses the APS-C sensor, then yes, the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD Lens for Sony E would be fully compatible for use on your camera. If your camera is a Sony Alpha full-frame mirrorless digital camera that uses the Sony E-mount lens mount, then the lens will attach, but do note you would need to use the APS-C Crop Mode in the camera by going to MENU → (Camera Settings1) → [JPEG Image Size] → desired setting. Do note this will reduce the maximum resolution you may use to capture your image. Also note the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD Lens for Sony E will not be compatible for use with Sony Alpha A-mount DSLR cameras.

Asked by: LYNN
It will work with the A7R but in "crop mode" ONLY. The sampling resolution will change from 36.4 MP to 15 MP. The effective magnification will INCREASE by 1.5X and the angle of view will DECREASE by 1.5X at any given focal length setting. Focusing range will remain the same.

Is this compatible with the Sony A7rII?
Asked by: Jaime
The answer to this is technically yes. This lens is designed for use with crop sensor/APS-C cameras and the a7 rII is a full frame camera so you'll only be getting the crop sensor/APS-C sensor framing if you use this on a full frame.
