Two problems are stabilization and a very stiff zoom ring

I tested my Tamron 18-300 against my Fujinon 16-80, that I've had for about a month. I'll be taking one to South Africa for use on game drives. Thanks to the X T-5's 1.4x and 2.0 digital zoom, I wanted to compare the Tamron at 300m (450mm equivalent) against the Fujinon at 120mm (178mm equivalent).. I figured that if the Fujinon's image was superior, I could make up the difference with further cropping. It was no contest. The Fujinon's better stabilization and the sharpness & contrast of the images I graded A, the Tamron image -- although it was much larger, was at best a C. In fact, with the 2.0 digital zoom setting (240mm equivalent) that Fuji warns is not as sharp as the 1.4 setting (168mm equivalent), the Fujinon was far better then the Tamron at 300mm (450mm equivalent) in terms of sharpness, contrast, and depth. The Tamron goes back tomorrow.

Great Superzoom

This lens is what you use when convenience rules the day or it's more important to "get the shot" than to "get the shot perfect." Its extreme range compensates for its primary deficiency, a lack of critical sharpness as compared to the more narrow-ranged XF zooms. If you are looking to pixel peep at 200% or crop your photos deeply this lens isn't for you, but the expansive range should greatly reduce the need to crop. If you fill the frame with your composition the images look great. This works best as a "daylight lens." Well-lit photos show plenty of detail and autofocus is fast in most situations but performance on both measures drop as the light drops, faster than with pro-grade lenses. This is not the best choice for shooting indoor action or things like birds-in-flight. The VR is effective, as I am getting 3+ stops of compensation at 300mm without too much effort, and I suspect more is possible with little concentration and at shorter focal lengths. This lens is not a lightweight. The robust grip of the X-S10 mitigates this but handling may be more awkward on the more classically styled Fuji bodies. None of this should be surprising. This is the price of being able to shoot a full-frame equivalent 27mm-450mm with semi-macro capability without changing lenses. This is a ton of lens for the money, and with its close focusing capability is the closest thing I've seen to a true one lens solution, so long as you have plenty of light or stationary subjects that allow you to push down shutter speeds. 99% of what I shoot with this will be viewed exclusively on social media where the image quality differences between the Tamron and more narrowly purposed lenses won't be as readily apparent. It wouldn't be fair to compare this Tameron directly with shorter range premium lenses but among superzooms it is one of the best I have ever used.

Super versatile

There are pretty obvious pros and cons - crazy wide focal range, slow and not constant aperture. It does have a pretty great close focusing distance, that at 18mm is basically the length of the lens. So far, continuous autofocus has been less than reliable, need to try single shot. The build is sort of a trade off - the plastic feels a little cheap, but it is very light - can't complain too much at the price point, either.

Purchased this lens based on Dustin Abbots review, currently have 3 Sony G lenses but wanted a light load for travel. Is this lens as sharp as G lenses? No. Is it close? Yes it is in my opinion. Add some sharpness in post and it's very competitive, super happy with the image quality, looking forward to leaving the bag of lenses home when traveling on motorcycle trips. For zoom range it is incredible what it delivers, mine is sharp at all focal lengths and centering is excellent, corners are good, thanks B&H.

I have had this lens for a couple of weeks now. Really like the form factor. It has a really fast autofocus. The photos look really good too.
