Bad Audio

Mine recorded videos fine but does not playback audio cleanly. I sent it to Blackmagic to get it fixed, It's been with them for nearly a month. I'm still in the cue with no estimated date of return.

Exactly what I wanted

I wanted to record video simply with the push of one button without using a PC. This device is perfect for that. Perfect size too.

Good, but not without drawbacks.

The good: compact, easy to set up, internal power supply, nice preview screen/menu. The bad: Lacks an HDMI input, despite having HDMI output. Even the HyperDeck Shuttle, the predecessor to this model, had an HDMI input for recording. It's a real letdown that Blackmagic chose to remove the ability to record HDMI even though this unit is more expensive than the previous generation. But the most aggravating feature of this unit is that it will only play files with the same codec that has been selected for recording; let's that you are set for recording ProRes HQ but in the mean time you need to play out content that that has been encoded in ProRes Proxy, for example, the deck won't do it! Even though ProRes Proxy (for example) is a valid codec for the platform, it won't PLAY unless you go in and change the RECORDING standard to Proxy. Asinine!

Great device but defective and returning

Positives: Great for what it does at about $500; records H.264. Negatives: Does not have HDMI input; does not come with AC power cable; AND arrived DEFECTIVE - internal power supply does not work and need to return it.

Small, Easy to Use with Great Functionality

We use our HyperDeck Mini to record from our Black Magic Web Presenter before sending a Live Stream to YouTube Live. We have Cloud Storage to archive our Live Streams but when the Internet is down or it's slow the value of Cloud Storage approaches zero. We need reliable, physical storage to complement our Cloud Storage and the HyperDeck Mini is just perfect for that application.

3rd unit and still has audio problems

By Michael

I have tested 3 units. None of them will carry a clean audio signal over SDI unless it is connected to another BMD device. I have tested this unit on multiple known working monitors and devices. All of them failed to cleanly decode the audio. I ran this through a BMD SDI to HDMI converter and a BMD SDI de-embedder and the audio plays fine. BMD support was not able to help me with this issue. I hope it is something that they can clean up with a firmware update. I have been running my 3rd unit for a week through a de-embedder and it has been working fine. It does already have a significant amount of screen burn. I wish there was a screen saver option.

2nd Unit having audio problems

After 2 months, I just received a new unit directly from BMD. From my testing, it has the same issue. The audio out of the SDI clicks every few seconds. The HDMI audio is clean.
