Westcott Optical Spot by Lindsay Adler Reviews
On the fence
First one I ordered was defective. A screw was put in sideways, making the leaves impossible to use correctly. B&H customer service was GREAT and got a new one out to me ASAP. Have only used the optical shot once so far. While I am happy with the outcome in my pics, not sure this was worth $500. Other EF lens can mounted but they do NOT mount without some effort. Which makes me a little nervous. Also I wish the leaves and gobo holder slide with a little more ease.
Improvements required
It's a bit difficult to use , specifically when you are moving the blades it tends to cut your fingers with blood flowing. Also putting in hobos it doesn't tend to hold professionally, basically moved around. Focusing ring is also flawed and a bit challenging to control. Broncolor optical spot was much better in terms of design. Wescott needs a lot of important improvements.
Excellent piece of equipment!
I recently purchased this for use in my studio and for a lighting class I provide. Although not perfect, I'm very pleased with the results! You will certainly get several orders from my students.
Worth It!!
You really can get as creative as you want with the attachments. I love it!!!
Endless possibilities
I've just started using the optical spot but it sure seems to open up endless possibilities to future shoots.
My new favorite equipment
This is definitely my new favorite addition! I have so many more ways to control light and express a certain mood or look, the options are infinite and I'm really happy with this purchase! Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new upgrade in lighting.
Very Nice Modifier
I used the optical spot quite a bit through the weekend on a fashion shoot and find the effect on the background very nice. I would recommend this to anyone interested in adding more layers of interest and depth and interest to your shoots. I used the optical spot only on the background so far.
Good but dangerous
It's a really useful tool, but the other reviews about the sharp blades are no joke. I sliced my finger packing it up, any worse I would have needed stitches. Please be careful when using. I was able to use it with a 50mm lens but nothing wider. I'd like to be able to use it with a 35 to cover a wall. Anyone have success with wide optics?
