FUJIFILM GFX 50S II Overview

By B&H Photo's
FUJIFILM GFX 50S II Medium Format Mirrorless Camera
FUJIFILM GFX 50S II: More Than Full Frame
Offering the perfect mix of accessibility and flexibility, the GFX 50S II from FUJIFILM is a unique medium format mirrorless camera that is wonderfully compact and portable. Featuring a 51.4MP CMOS sensor paired with an improved X-Processor 4 image processor, this camera produces files with extremely wide dynamic range and high resolution, as well as having an extended sensitivity range of ISO 50-102400 for working in difficult lighting conditions. The sensor's large form factor also achieves a unique three-dimensional look with especially smooth tonal and color transitions.
The GFX 50S II has also been updated with a five-axis in-body image stabilization system that negates up to 6.5 stops of camera shake for improved handheld shooting, providing dramatically broad creative possibilities for image makers wanting to work more freely with slower shutter speeds. For composing images, a 3.69m-dot electronic viewfinder can be used for high-resolution eye-level viewing, and a rear 3.2" 2.36m-dot touchscreen LCD features a three-way tilting design that supports working from high and low angles. Additionally, the GFX 50S II offers a magnesium alloy build that is both lightweight and durable and is also dust- and weather-sealed, as well as freezeproof down to 14°F, for working in harsh environmental conditions.
51.4MP CMOS Sensor and X-Processor 4
Utilizing a large, 43.8 x 32.9mm 51.4MP CMOS sensor and an improved X-Processor 4, the GFX 50S II is capable of delivering high-resolution, 14-bit stills with a broad sensitivity range of ISO 100-12800, which can be extended to ISO 50-102400. The large size of each pixel allows for more efficient light gathering, too, for smoother tonal and color transitions to produce a characteristic three-dimensional "medium format look." Also contributing to several medium format looks, a variety of traditional medium and large format aspect ratios can be used in addition to the standard 4:3, including 1:1, 65:24, 5:4, 7:6, 3:2, and 16:9. The image processor and sensor also permit shooting continuously up to 3 fps or for recording Full HD 1080p video at 29.97, 25, 24, and 23.98 fps frame rates.
Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization
Standing out from its predecessor, the GFX 50S II features an in-body image stabilization system that provides up to an impressive 6.5 stops of five-axis stabilization. This provides dramatically broad possibilities for image makers wanting to work more freely with slow shutter speeds.
117-Point Autofocus System
Complimenting the updated image processor is a 117-point autofocus system enabling razor-sharp responses, whether subject tracking or picking out a face in a crowd. An improved autofocusing algorithm boosts focusing performance in all modes, including face and eye detection.
Additional Camera Features
  • The FUJIFILM G lens mount features a short focal flange distance of just 26.7mm to better facilitate adapting lenses and to allow for reduced back focusing distances to better prevent vignetting and promote edge-to-edge sharpness with the GF series of lenses.

  • Mechanical focal plane permits working with shutter speeds from 60 min. up to 1/4000 sec, and an electronic shutter allows the use of shutter speeds up to 1/16000 sec for working in bright light conditions.
  • Dual SD memory card slots are featured, and permit saving imagery in a sequential manner, backup/duplicate manner, or in a sorted manner to segregate JPEG and raw files.

    FUJIFILM GFX 50S II Reviews

    Great Camera

Excellent Camera, the picture coming out of this sensor in absolutely incredible. I have shot with pretty much all of the major flagship cameras. Fuji has create a great camera, that produces beautiful shots. This camera is not for everyone. If you take your time and slow down and are not shooting sports. This camera will blow you away with the colors and the detail. The kit lens has really impressed me to. Thank you Fuji for making a great camera. Please keep them coming.

hard AF focus in low light

Been using the Fujifilm for two days now and I should have read the reviews, the contrast detect focus will not work for my photo work. I like to shoot in low light and without phase detect AF this camera is useless. Works fine for bright landscape work, but even that it takes too long to focus. The camera is very well built and will be looking at getting the GFX 100s which has phase AF.

the images are just beautiful. the color is spot one. I'm using my old Mamiya 150mm with adapter and just wow, used AWB and the color is perfect and images are gorgeous. a bit of a learning curve and with so many menus and sub menus that you can get lost. I use custom settings and that made changing lens just a turn on the dial and done.

    Great Medium Format

Excellent medium digital format, for an affordable price and with dimensions of a small DSLR. I'm really enjoying the quality of the images and everything else, before I used a Nikon D750.

    Near Perfect

Coming from the professional world of film photography, this is a welcome addition. With the rising price of film, I looked for an option to my hasselblad. With its affordable medium format sensor this fit the bill. Using an adapter so that I can use my old lenses, the transition was almost seamless. Though somewhat skeptical of image stabilization, this has greatly streamlined my process. I can get away with using just a monopod where I previously had to use a tripod. And the sensor is beautiful. I only shoot in raw and have so far loved the sensor. I only wish it was more like the raw format in Black Magic cameras. Over saturated colors seem out of place in this camera. The build quality of the camera is very good. No it doesnt shoot like a sports camera but neither did my hasselblad. That would be a misuse of this camera. But Fuji has a made a couple odd choices. Most notably the joy stick. Its too small and nothing like some other cameras I have owned. Also the viewfinder level is a bare minimum. Just a line across the screen. With a medium format camera this is an essential item and should be more in line in what you get in mid-range Nikons. The tilting viewfinder is nice but for medium format not that useful. Some have complained about the evf but Ive had no problem with it. The image is what matters and its beautiful.

    Best decision ever!

I admit I was hesitant to purchase after reading reviews about facial tracking, but this isn't a feature I have ever been dependent on as a photographer before and I refused to rely on this as a final decision when going medium format. I'm glad I wasn't deterred. After upgrading to latest firmware and adjusting metering and focus to settings that work for a manual portrait shooter like myself, I simply could not be more happy with my decision. I also purchased the 80mm lens along with the kit lens and both lenses are superb. I truly didn't know what I had been missing until I saw the first set of images from this sensor. I continue to modify settings to my liking as they are literally limitless. I fully expect this experience to only get better and better! Thank you FujiFilm for bringing my work to entire new level because after 36 years I can truly say this system inspires me more every time I use it!

    THE must have MF Camera

After enjoying the 50r for 14 months I made the "lateral" move to the 50sii only the find it is a HUGE upgrade. The AF is better as is the face/eye detect. I really like the ergonomics (with an added baseplate) and it's much easier to adjust SS and aperture without pulling the camera from my face. As someone that has worked with pro digital MF cameras for over a decade, this is the one to buy for commercial advertising, studio work, travel, street, and personal work. It's NOT A SPORTS CAMERA. It isn't supposed to be. The 50sII would be a good deal at twice the price.

I was shopping for an X-T5 or maybe an X-H2 to nurture my love for Fujifilm cameras but to still fit in my workflow as an event photographer. Either of those could have gone nicely with my Sony A7RIII in my sort of weird mix of brands. But no, Fujifilm had to be running this awesome promo on a camera that would be really spectacular for landscape photography (which is my favorite genre but not the one that I get paid for...ever), so what did I do, I got the landscape camera. It is a bit big and clunky but I find it easy enough to use, not quite as dial-tastic as my old X-T1 but still easy enough to change what I need to change quickly and easily. I've used it on vacation and for a couple family photo shoots so far and I love the results. The AF is slower than my Sony, but not so much that it is a huge issue. We shall see when I shoot an event later this month how much I use the Fuji and how much I defer to the Sony for action shots.
