Shure MV7X + Overview

Shure MV7X Podcast XLR Microphone
Get a professional podcast sound inspired by the heralded SM7B microphone with the Shure MV7X, the analog XLR-only version of the MV7 dual-output XLR/USB mic. This is a high-quality, broadcast-style dynamic microphone designed to work with any XLR mic input, no phantom power required. The Shure MV7X fulfills the needs of anyone who desires a smooth, robust vocal sound akin to the infamous SM7B, but at a significantly lower price point.
Knowing that at-home podcasters may not have acoustic treatment in their rooms, Shure chose to utilize a cardioid polar pattern for the MV7X. This unidirectional polar response primarily picks up sound in front of the mic while greatly reducing the capture of background noise behind the mic. The built-in pop filter helps control vocal plosives without relying on an external pop screen. Sturdy metal construction makes the MV7X a rugged and dependable performer.
This microphone is part of the B&H Virtual Mic Locker, an online tool to help our valued customers determine the sonic differences between popular microphones for podcasting and voice over work. Each microphone was recorded using a Grace Design M103 preamp into a Presonus Quantum 2626 interface.
MV7X vs MV7
The MV7X is an XLR-only version of the MV7 XLR/USB podcast microphone; it offers the same mic element and physical construction, minus the digital features. While the sonic signature is identical, the price point is even lower for users who only need the XLR connectivity.
Legendary Broadcast Sound
The mic takes its design and sonic cues from the Shure SM7B, a classic used on countless podcasts and radio broadcasts. Use the mic in close proximity to your voice and you'll find it exhibits a clear, intelligible, and high-quality sound with a frequency response optimized for rich and natural vocal reproduction.
Works with XLR Inputs, No Power Required
Outfitted with a traditional XLR 3-pin output, the MV7X can connected to any XLR mic input, whether it's on an audio interface, an external mic preamp, or a mixer. No power source is required for the MV7X because it is a dynamic microphone, so forget about needing to engage phantom power like you would for a condenser mic.
Rugged Appointments for Sound and Use
Like the SM7B, the MV7 has a built-in pop filter to protect against plosives and p-pops, greatly simplifying your editing process. With its integrated ready-to-mount yoke with 5/8" threading, the mic offers a build quality that is rugged, with an all-metal construction for reliability in mission-critical circumstances.
Unidirectional Polar Pattern for the Untreated Room
The mic features a unidirectional cardioid polar pattern, which is the best natural defense against room noise: since the capsule mostly captures what's directly in front of it, you won't pick up as much room noise as you would with another polar pattern. Depending on your particular room, you may still need a little room treatment, or some noise-reduction software, to address issues such as your computer's hum or your air conditioner—but the chances of that are markedly lower with a cardioid polar pattern.

Auray BAI-2X Two-Section Broadcast Arm with Internal Springs and Integrated XLR Cable

The Auray BAI-2X is a two-section broadcast arm with internal springs and an integrated XLR cable. This versatile and sturdy broadcast arm is great for studio as well as home use. It's ideal for broadcast, voiceover, and podcasts.

The BAI-2X broadcast arm is designed with internal springs that provide a clean and sleek look. The internal balance springs are precision engineered to support and hold in place microphones of up to 5 lb / 2.27kg. The design also minimizes handling noise when re-positioning the arm. The broadcast arm features a standard 5/8"-27 microphone stud mount that is compatible with most shockmounts and microphone clips. The angle of the microphone stud mount can be adjusted and secured with the locking knob, and the angle is maintained when re-positioning the arm. This eliminates the need to readjust it every time the arm is moved. With an extension of up to 40 inches, and the ability to rotate the arm 360°, the BAI-2X allows for precise microphone placement.

The BAI-2X also features a heavy-duty combo mount that consists of a sturdy C-clamp and a heavy-metal desktop mount. The C-clamp is capable of fastening onto desktops up to 2.3" thick. The C-clamp's slim design minimizes the clearance needed to mount it between a desk and wall. The desktop mount detaches from the C-clamp and provides the option of permanent installation to a desktop with the mounting screws (included). A 14" riser is included for adding height to the broadcast arm in order to extend over computer or studio monitors.

This has been a big step up from the Shure table top mic sets I was using. I'm running the MV7X through my Zoom H6 handy recorder, and it has plenty of gain to run them. The vocals are clear and accurate, mostly these microphones just 'get out of the way' and let the host and guests perform. I bought with Auray Boom Arm kit, and the arms are sturdy and mount securely, a very good match for these microphones. I look forward to using these for years.
