The Sony E-mount 90mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens from Sigma is a short-telephoto prime with impressive optical performance. It is well-suited for portraiture and selective everyday shooting and offers a fast f/2.8 aperture for controlling depth of field and working in less-than-ideal light. This lens includes an aspherical element and five special low dispersion elements to control a variety of aberrations and achieve notable sharpness and clarity. The lens incorporates a manual aperture ring for enhanced tactility, and also featured is a stepping motor for quick and quiet AF performance. A rounded nine-blade diaphragm lets you achieve pleasingly smooth bokeh, and the lens's all metal body is weather-sealed to suit working in inclement conditions.

Niche lens, very nice
I'm a big fan of 85mm for pretty much all types of photography (travel, landscape, portraits), so this is a great lens for me since it's small and light and easy to carry around. Much easier to grab and take out than a bulky f1.4 or zoom lens. I've had a lot of fun and satisfaction using this lens simply because of its size. Obviously, it's somewhat limited by only being an f2.8, but I'm fine with that as I usually know ahead of time whether lighting will be good. On a sunny day f2.8 is more than enough. f2.8 also still gives plenty of bokeh in my opinion, and the bokeh on this lens is well rendered and well transitioned between in- and out-of-focus. It's sharp wide open (at least from what I can tell with my layman eyes) and the lens has the typical excellent Sigma build quality. Overall: a niche lens that's not for everyone, but I think the people it appeals to will adore it.

Sharp, light, and small
I bought this to replace my old Sony 85mm f/1.8, and though it's not as fast as the Sony, it's sharper, lighter, and smaller. Time will tell if I'll miss the custom button on the 85mm, but the aperture ring is a nice bonus, and the metal hood is more durable than the plastic one on my old Sony. I'm very pleased!
Outstanding value
Whenever you can get a sharp, well built lens with good ergonomic controls at a reasonable cost, you have to be well satisfied. Highly recommended. Sigma lenses are winners.
Modern with Character
Sigma has something special here with the new DG DN Contemporary i Lenses for the L Mount (and Sony E Mount). I am using it on a Leica SLS-2. As many others have said, the build quality is something to behold down to every detail including the hood and the magnetic cap (both heavy-duty). All of it is built with precision. The AF is instant and silent, but even more amazing is its manual focus ability. It's focus-by-wire, but it's smooth, well dampened and feels really good with a long and very precise focus throw. I'm impressed. What has surprised me is that the lens shows some character. It's modern and very sharp with a very pleasant out-of-focus rendering, but instead of being clinical, it's more balanced between displaying a modern sharpness and draw, mixed with some emotion. It's very nice. The 90mm here makes me want to try some other focal lengths in this line. The lenses aren't inexpensive, but they're not expensive either. Sigma pulled off a well-balanced lineup here, and they are beautiful to behold and to hold. The 90mm f2.8 is highly recommended.
Doesn't match the Sigma 30mm f1.4 & the 56mm f1.4
Despite its small size and metal body, the 90mm f2.8 doesn't meet the quality levels of the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and 56mm f1.4. Maybe because of its smaller aperture and lack of anti-vibration controls, the other lenses don't hunt and they produce (for me) fewer blurred images. A 90mm lens really needs VR. At this point I'm waiting for Sigma (or any of the other major brands) to produce a 105mm f4 with VR that small, light, and under $800 for L mounts.
