Glyph Technologies External HDD Reviews
Best large storage external HD I've used so far
I currently own this Glyph HD (18TB) and a SanDisk G-Drive (12TB) which I purchased about a year ago. I use them both as archival drives for video client projects and occasionally work on projects right off of them. Both have similar specs (both USB-C drives, however the Glyph is Gen 2 whereas the G-Drive is Gen 1). So far I like the Glyph a lot more for these reasons: 1. It's much quieter and doesn't sound like it's breaking when I use it. The G-Drive is strangely noisy. 2. While working on projects stored on the HD or even just transferring files to it using Finder on my Mac, the G-Drive falls asleep after only a minute or so of inactivity. It then takes several seconds to spin back up in order for me to resume work. Tech support referred me to Apple about it, saying it wasn't a G-Drive issue, but I was doubtful of that. The Glyph doesn't fall asleep and just works so much more smoothly. 3. Price of the Glyph was lower even though I got 6TB more space. Super happy with this purchase and only wish I'd known about Glyph sooner!
Fast & quiet HD
Fast and quiet hard drive with huge capacity
I've been wanting a Glyph.
My first look at a glyph was in a music catalogue a few years back; I just had to give one a go sometime. It's my time machine, and so far all is well. B & H is becoming a go to place for me .
Great high capacity drive at a great price
The drive is the highest capacity I own. It has a fast read/write speed and quick internal drive mechanism as well. I am using it to back up a large OneDrive and Sharepoint server online to have a local copy. I have backed up 4 TB and still have lots of room to spare.
Great Drive so far
Great drive! I've owned another Glyph and it has performed great. This one is bigger and I'll be using it to make sure it's as good. Easy drive to work with.
Reliable - Dependable - Great
This is my 8th glyph drive. These are incredibly reliable drives. Every time I need to have my data backed up and backed up again these have never let me down. I have 4 of these Blackbox pros. (14Tb and 20Tb) Each of them has been exceptionally reliable. The speed of these drives is very good at approximately 260 MBS. The outside skin feels like silicone rubber. They look pretty cool on my desk. They just barely get warm after about 12 hours of writing to them. They are durable enough to use as a portable drive,. If you need a portable or desktop drive these do the trick. Enjoy!
Frequently Ejects and Remounts
The drive I purchased, as many others have discovered, turns itself off and then back on, sometimes frequently (even before being connected to a computer). I filed an RMA and returned it to Glyph. They claimed they could not replicate the problem, but sent me a replacement. The replacement drive was even more defective and erratic. I tried many different solutions, but eventually just removed the actual drive itself and am now using it (without any problems or issues) with a relatively inexpensive enclosure I bought from B&H. The Glyph BlackBox Pro must have some defective component in its power supply assembly.
Worked first day and never worked properly again
I was excited to finally invest in a Glyph external hard drive for backing up my work. The intention was to consolidate a number of smaller drives. I am relieved I didn't get too far in the process when the Glyph drive stopped working on day 2. The drive would eventually come on after about an hour or so of being plugged in but eventually even that stopped happening. From what I read, there has been a bad batch of drives from Glyph this cycle. I probably should have heeded the warnings but was lucky to not suffer a data catastrophe. I returned it and bought a Lacie Professional drive and have been very happy.
