Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Overview

A versatile telephoto-zoom with a portable form factor, the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM is a nimble lens perfect for wildlife, sports, and travel shooting. With extended range, this zoom packs super-telephoto reach into a relatively sleek, lightweight design along with support for Coordinated IS to help control up to 6 stops of camera shake and Nano USM AF to promote faster focusing performance.

Optically, the lens uses specialized elements to control a variety of aberrations and produce images with high sharpness and clarity throughout the zoom range. Close-focusing performance is also possible, with a maximum magnification of 0.41x at the 400mm position, for close-up shooting of subjects as small as a credit card.

Long-reaching telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
Modest f/5.6-8 maximum aperture range promotes a relatively compact, lightweight form factor.
One Ultra Low Dispersion element is featured toward the front of the optical design and helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range.
One aspherical element helps control distortion and promotes a high degree of sharpness.
Super Spectra Coating has been applied to minimize flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by 5.5 stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Also, when working with select cameras, up to 6 stops of stabilization may be available with the Coordinated Optical Image Stabilizer and In-Body Image Stabilizer.
Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and near silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.
Close focusing capabilities are available throughout the zoom range, with a maximum magnification of 0.41x available at the 400mm position and a minimum focusing distance of 2.9' possible at the 200mm position.
Rounded 9-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Compatible with optional Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x teleconverters to further increase the effective focal length.

Paired with an R6- and love it after 1 week. Sharp, fast focus, lightweight, not bulky to handle.

Great for an amateur like me.

For context, I should say that I am absolutely an amateur photographer and my lenses are all in the same category as this one, or cheaper. Also, this is the first 200mm lens I've ever had. That said, I find it has strengths that easily justify its price, and its weaknesses will probably fade as I get more practice with it. The stabilization is really good, but still for birds (not my main subject) you will still need to work hard to get your shots. For a lot of more stationary or at least less herky-jerky subjects, it's plenty. It's light in the sense of being lighter than similar lenses, but make no mistake: if you're holding your camera with one hand, after a while this lens will make that hand tired. It looks a little funny extended, but that's the fashion now I guess. I got the cheap hood which works just fine. The control ring has turned out be be super useful on this lens -- much more than on the 35mm -- because changing the ISO is a regular thing when shooting any kind of action. I didn't buy it for portraits but I did take a few and they were pretty bad. So far though it looks very, very promising for my plans: urban photography (in a huge city, with a river) and landscapes (on a volcanic island), plus whatever weird things I see in the distance and want to shoot. I will echo the advice I got from many YouTubers and also from the experts at B&H in New York: if this is what you can afford, and you don't want to spend four times this much, then just get it.

It's so light and easy to carry around, plus it's sharp. F8 is no problem as long as you know what your doing.

As good as the L series

I formerly had the Canon L series 100-400 zoom lens and when I went to the R mount cameras decided to by the new budget 100-400 Canon R mount lens and it is as sharp and fast as the L series that I used before. A good purchase.

A great lens at a great price

It is a good price for such a full frame RF mount lens over a very useful focal range for wildlife. I will use it both on my R5 and my new R7.

Excellent lens for the money.

Truly amazing image quality, on par with L glass

I bought this lens because of reviews stating that said the image quality is fantastic, plus it is much smaller in size and lower in weight compared to L glass. I'm going on a landscape photo trip that will involve miles of hiking every day, so size and weight are critically important. I have the EF 100-400 f/4-5.6 L (a wonderful beast), and while the images are amazing, I did not want to carry that thing all day long. For the price, I am simply stunned by the image quality of this RF 100-400. I took it out for some test shots and I believe it is every bit as sharp as my EF 100-400, especially when it comes to edited and printed images. Yes, it is a few stops slower, but for landscape work on a tripod, that does not matter. And I can shield it from rain with a cover since it isn't weather-sealed like L glass is. I am very much looking forward to the trip with this lens.

Game Changer

I'm a firm believer in the idea that gear doesn't make you a better photographer, but gear certainly can make your photography experience more fun. And this lens did that for me. I found myse;of shooting more and shooting in old places in a completely new way. This has enough reach to really offer new possibilities, and it remains light enough to carry around easily. The limited (com pampered to more expensive lenses) aperatures don't limit things when paired with my EOS-R due to the camera's great performance across a wide range of ISOs. For the money, this thing rocks

When using the 2X TC, will we be able to use the entire focal zoom length from 100 to 400mm ? Or will it have a limit like when using the 100-500 lens that you can't go below 300mm ?
Asked by: Joel
Why would you want to use a 2x extender to reach a focal length that the lens has in its range by itself? In other words, there is no sense and it actually harms image quality to use a 2x extender when the lens is set to 200mm or less.

Has anyone compared this lens to the EF 70-300 F-5.6 IS USM II? I have that lens and love it. I need a second copy. On its older lens is cheaper and has a better aperture range.

No contest. The EF 100-400L lens will easily outperform the RF 100-400 lens in image quality. But then the "L" lens is considerably higher priced.

NO it does not come with a lens hood. The Canon branded hood is ET-74B and is quite pricey. As a rule of thumb only canon EF/RF "L" lens come with a hood.
