Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM Overview

By B&H Photo's
Ultra-wide field of view mixed with a compact and portable design, the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM is a sleek everyday wide-angle prime. Blending a compact, lightweight design with a bright maximum aperture, this rectilinear ultra-wide comes in handy when photographing interiors and architectural subjects, as well as broad landscape views and astrophotography scenes.

One aspherical element is featured in the optical design, which limits distortion and contributes to a high degree of sharpness for accurate rendering. This unique lens also sports a close 5.1" minimum focusing distance for close-up shooting and the STM AF motor enables smooth and quiet focusing performance to suit both photo and video applications. The lightweight design and broad field of view also make this lens an enticing option for vlogging and content creation.
Sleek ultra-wide-angle prime is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital cameras.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working available lighting conditions, helps control depth of field, and contributes to a sleek form factor.
One aspherical element helps control distortion and promotes a high degree of sharpness.
Super Spectra Coating has been applied to minimize flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
Minimum focusing distance of 5.1", along with a maximum magnification of 0.26x, makes this a unique option for close-up shooting while retaining great depth of field.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

This lens would be great for Astrophotography. I don't have sample images but, it's definitely a great choice.

Is this lens build strong enough to support the weight of a 100mm filter system such as the Nisi 100mm filter system?
Asked by: jackie
The Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM Lens uses 43mm front filter threads. Unfortunately, none of the 100mm (4-inch) filter holders we carry have 43mm adapter rings to connect the filter holder to the lens' filter threads. While it may be possible to use a step-up ring to connect the filter holder to the lens, I would probably try to use a different lens.

How doe this lens compare to the How does this lens compare to the RF 14-35mm f4 in edge to edge sharpness at f16?
Asked by: Robert
I've shot extensively with both lenses, and for the price, weight and size, the 16 is a very nice lens (see my review). Edge to Edge compared to the $1,200 more expensive 14-35? I don't think that's a fair comparison. Set up properly, this can be an excellent lens for a lot of scenarios--street, landscape, even interiors--but it's not going to be quite as sharp as the 14-35...at least not in my comparisons. Still, hard to fault it for that.

Asked by: gek-choo
The M50 only uses EF-M lenses and cannot accept RF lenses. However, Sigma makes this 16mm f1.4 lens for the M50 and other EF-M mount cameras: https://bhpho.to/3mWJq4y

Is there both auto focus and manual focus on this lens? I do not see a focus circle for manual focus on the lens.
Asked by: orkell
This lens does have AF and MF as options. The switch on the lens can be used to control focus or to use as a custom configuration. When it's set to Focus, and you set the camera's focusing mode to MF, the ring will control the focus.
