Canon DM-E1D Overview

Dedicated to select Canon cameras featuring a Multi-Function Shoe, the DM-E1D Stereo Microphone is a compact external microphone offering a range of directional control for improved audio quality when recording videos. This dedicated mic utilizes the Multi-Function Shoe to provide power and a digital connection, meaning no batteries or cabled connections are required for use. The streamlined design carries over to settings control, too, with the mic solely featuring a Menu button to bring up a menu on the connected camera for making adjustments and settings changes.

Compatible with Canon cameras featuring a Multi-Function Shoe, this mic digitally connects to the camera with this connection and also receives power from it; no batteries or connection cables required.
Digital connection greatly reduces buzzing or unwanted noise in audio recordings.
Three separate pickup settings are available to suit a variety of shooting needs:
  • Shotgun is a focused recording mode that picks up a narrow band of sound in front of the camera, making it suitable for dialogues, single musical instruments, or other specific subjects.
  • 90° stereo recording mode is suitable for a single subject and adds some audio context to the sides to suit recording small groups of people.
  • 120° stereo recording mode offers a wider angle of sound that is ideal for recording larger groups in more expansive areas, such as a band on stage or an outdoor party.
Menu button works in conjunction with the camera's own menu system, and microphone settings adjustments can be made via the camera interface.
The included windscreen helps to reduce peripheral sound from wind or other ambient sounds for cleaner, more focused playback.

Canon DM-E1D Reviews

Gets the Job Done

If you are looking for a compact and convenient stereo microphone for a compatible Canon camera, the Canon DM-E1D will get the job done. For evaluation, I used the DM-E1D and plugged in a stereo clip-on microphone (into my Canon R5c) and got 4-channels of audio (2 channels from DM-E1D + 2 clip-on mic channels) without much work. All 3 modes (shotgun, 90, 120) are solid. I would suggest being mindful of the shoe mic volume settings. The channel volumes are quite low when using the "Automatic" setting. The one obvious CON is not carrying case is included. The mic/pedestal connection seems delicate so I wouldn't just chuck the DM-E1D in my camera bag. I was able to repurpose the Ruggard EVA Case for GoPro Cameras (Small) and it makes a perfect case for this product. Overall, I am satisfied with this product.

Every Canon Shooter needs this.

I have used this on both the R5C and R3. Effortless to work with, love the 3 options of shotgun, 90', and 180' degrees. For a small, on camera mic this is the most efficient product Canon users will find. Worth the wait.... kind of, I ordered this the day it was first on B&H over 8 months ago, lol.

Compact and easy to use

I'm using this to take casual videos for personal use. For my needs, it's good and very easy to use. No need for a mic in cord is nice. A single button on the mic brings up the mic customization menu if you are in the video mode in R3. Comes with a deadcat/windscreen but no carrying/storage case for the mic.

Better Than Rode

I used to use the Rode+ Mic for my R5 and R5C, and while the R5 can't support this, it makes me wish it could. The Canon DM-E1D is perfect for the R5C. You don't need cables or any extra setup. As soon as your camera turns on, so does the mic. Pressing the rear Menu button on the mic itself brings up your cameras integrated menu for audio. Feels like it's part of the camera rather than an attachment! The build quality is solid and does not feel cheap (it better not for this price). The audio quality (from just the naked ear) versus the Rode is not better, not worse. That's fine for me as my primary reason for purchase was the integration with the camera and ridding cables.

Will this work with the Canon R5 and R6 ?
Asked by: Joel
The Canon DM-E1D Stereo Microphone is a brand new mic that is not yet in stock and the information available at this time is limited. The DM-E1D uses a cable-free and battery-free connection to attach to select Canon cameras equipped with Canon's new Multi-Function Shoe, which is a standard feature on the new EOS R3 Mirrorless Digital Camera. The R5 and R6 models have a conventional hot shoe, not the Multi-Function Shoe. The wired Canon DM-E1 Directional Microphone (B&H # CADME1) is compatible with the R5 and R6 cameras.
