Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 Overview

An ideal everyday lens, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is a versatile prime straddling wide-angle and normal fields of view and featuring a bright f/2 maximum aperture. The distinct focal length is wide enough for spontaneous shooting but still tight enough for portraiture and selective focus shooting. Additionally, the lens's compact, portable form factor makes it perfect for walkaround shooting and equally well-suited to use on FX or DX-format camera bodies.

In terms of handling, a stepping motor AF system offers quiet and smooth focusing performance that benefits both stills and video capture and a programmable control ring can also be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Wide-normal prime lens is designed for FX-format Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras and can also be used with DX-format models, where it provides a 60mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2 maximum aperture excels in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects using depth of field.
Two aspherical elements are featured in the optical design and help to limit spherical aberrations and distortion in order to achieve high sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Integrated Coating suppresses flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 Reviews

Great little lens

I've kept this lens on my z9 since I got it and do most of my 'walk around' shooting with it. I added the Sensei aluminum hood for protection and so far both are working out great

Great for Travel

I bought this to have a smaller setup for travel than the 24-200mm f/4-6.3 lens on my Z6. I had already purchased and returned the 24-50mm f/4-6.3 lens so I was not expecting much but I was very pleasantly surprised. It's sharp, fast, and - I might be biased because I'd done some research and read a review that raved about the color rendition, but - I loved the colors. I traveled for three weeks and never took it off my camera. Now I'm looking forward to buying the 28mm, too.

Love it!

This is my first prime lens. I've always used zoom lenses and I can't believe how versatile it is. Images are sharp, reacts quickly. I guess my only complaint is I wish it had a lens hood. And really if that's my only complaint then I really don't have any complaints!

Affordable and lightweight!

Bought this lens to minimize the size and weight of my gimbal setup for video. There's a lot of vignetting at F/2 but F/2.8 and higher performs perfectly. Autofocus is super fast and clean with no breathing. The 40mm focal length is a perfect balance between 35 and 50. I'm obsessed with the size and weight.

Great little lens

This lens is perfect for what I wanted - very sharp, very small, feather light (vs my usual Z 24-70 f4 which is fabulous, but weighs about as much as a brick). 40mm is a great working focal length, providing a little extra depth and a little wider field of view (for less take a few steps forward, for more stitch a few images into a pano). It is now my go-to lens for a light weight system with my Z7 for hiking or just causal walking around. And the free UV filter was a nice bonus.

A grab and go lens

The 40mm f/2 lens is an excellent choice for any kind of shooting. While it is not quite as sharp as my 50mm f/1.8 it still produces images that are fine for anything except very big enlargements or very severe cropping. The angle of view is very useful and the small size and light weight make it easy to carry anywhere. Many may think it's for street photography or "snapshots" but for anything up to an 8x10 print it's fine for architecture and landscape images, too! And, it's hard to beat the price!

Cheap, Convenient, and Wonderful

I've had this lens for a few weeks now, and I'm really impressed. I bought it to replace the much bulkier 35mm 1.8s lens and aside from the reduced weight and size I've noticed very little difference. The autofocus might be a touch louder than the 35mm, but the difference is basically negligible; similarly 35 to 40mm and 1/8 to 2.0 make such little difference in any real sense. It's a great vacation lens for walking around Disney World-really useful focal length, excellent image quality, and small enough to not get in the way ever. I love it.

One of the best lenses for Z mount

Wow - super impressed with this cheap lens. Plastic everything but focus is sharp, it's light and the lens doesn't dominate the front of the camera like most other Z mount lenses- great for street photography or travel!

Asked by: Ricardo
As far as we are aware, the new Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 does not have the same weather-resistant gasket available in their S-series lenses like the NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8 S. However, according to Nikon, the 40mm (and 28mm f/2.8) have "a design with consideration of dust- and drip-resistant performance".

Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 Lens will accept any 52mm screw in hood. I like this Heliopan because it has 52mm front threads so you can still use the lens cap with the hood on. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/21873-REG/Heliopan_701052_52mm_Rubber_Lens_Hood.html
