Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 Overview

An ideal everyday lens, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is a versatile prime straddling wide-angle and normal fields of view and featuring a bright f/2 maximum aperture. The distinct focal length is wide enough for spontaneous shooting but still tight enough for portraiture and selective focus shooting. Additionally, the lens's compact, portable form factor makes it perfect for walkaround shooting and equally well-suited to use on FX or DX-format camera bodies.

In terms of handling, a stepping motor AF system offers quiet and smooth focusing performance that benefits both stills and video capture and a programmable control ring can also be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Wide-normal prime lens is designed for FX-format Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras and can also be used with DX-format models, where it provides a 60mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2 maximum aperture excels in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects using depth of field.
Two aspherical elements are featured in the optical design and help to limit spherical aberrations and distortion in order to achieve high sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Integrated Coating suppresses flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 Reviews

I had to return mine...

... because it was not as sharp as the 24-50 f/4-6.3 on my Z5. There seems to be a batch of these in the second wave of shipments that were substandard compared to resolution tests published on the web. I loved the size, weight, 52mm filter, image colors, bokeh, and excellent autofocus so I'll order this again and hope to get a good one next time. P. S. B&H handled the return nicely and I look forward to continue to buy from them because of great prices and service.

Much better than expected

This lens is surprisingly good. Much better than I would have expected for the price. I think I'll keep this lens on my Z5 more or less permanently. I've been impressed by the crispness of my shots thus far. Also the color saturation and contrast are excellent and on par with other Z mount lenses I have used (specifically the 35 1.8). I also have and was using up to now the 50 2.8 Micro lens. That lens is also surprisingly good. However this smaller 40 is also noticeably lighter in weight and I like the extra field of view. Overall I would highly recommend this lens. NOTE that this lens does NOT come with a shade/hood. One is probably not necessary. However I'd recommend a filter to provide a modest bit of protection to the front lens element.

No hood

I like this lens and focal length. It is very light and plastic made incl. mount but I do not have any issue. There is no hood included so I am looking for a good one for this lens now from third party supplier.

Clear and small

Just used for the first few times this weekend. Lightweight and easy tl carry around. Bought this to be free of the adapter for my 35/f1.8 F-mount and it's working out well. 35 is perhaps a slightly better focal length for the Dx body, but not worth the extra few hundred dollars and extra weight as a hobbyist.

compact and good focal length.

Perfect Party Lens

This lens is prefect for hanging out with friends. It's wide enough to capture the scene, but narrow enough to highlight the subject. The lens' best feature is definitely it's compact size- it makes the camera feel like a point-and-shoot, which is exactly what I want for quick photos where you only have a second to capture the image. Image quality is great at usual for the Z-mount lenses and you can't beat the price. 10/10 would buy again.

Fast, Light and Versatile

First, 40mm's angle of vision on full-frame is much closer to real human eye perspective than either 35mm or 50mm can. That's why I pre-ordered the lens when B&H was ready to take orders. What sets the lens apart is its versatility for both still and video. Its light weight and fast aperture allow you to do better run-and-gun style than any z zoom can. Also, I constantly use it on Z6 II as a video cam for zoom meetings. F/2 can blur most background away and still can make both of your eyes in sharp focus. It's also a fabulous walkaround lens, thanks to its compact size and light weight. If you need more reach and can't walk closer to the subject, it doubles as a 60mm lens in DX mode. Its rendering and color reproduction are right on the money. No doubt about that. If you need a hood, go get Sensai 52mm collapsible rubber hood II (item#: BH #SELHR252). It's perfect in every way. Here's my little vid review on that: https://youtu.be/cQAMTJVT8Yg Here's a test shot.

Asked by: Ricardo
As far as we are aware, the new Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 does not have the same weather-resistant gasket available in their S-series lenses like the NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8 S. However, according to Nikon, the 40mm (and 28mm f/2.8) have "a design with consideration of dust- and drip-resistant performance".

Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 Lens will accept any 52mm screw in hood. I like this Heliopan because it has 52mm front threads so you can still use the lens cap with the hood on. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/21873-REG/Heliopan_701052_52mm_Rubber_Lens_Hood.html
