Redefining Excellence

Sony's FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II takes the classic fast zoom and elevates performance to a whole new level. This lens builds upon the best parts of the original and makes them even better while simultaneously reducing weight by 29%—making this lens the lightest in its class. Sony has also given this lens a brand-new AF system that promises up to four times the speed and has made plenty of optical optimizations that will appeal to video shooters, including improvements to focus breathing and focus shift. Whether you shoot portraits, sports, landscapes, or video, the 70-200mm f/2.8 will get the job done.

Improved Optical Performance

A hallmark of the G Master line is outstanding optical performance with both high sharpness and smooth bokeh. Using a new design, the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II promises corner-to-corner sharpness across the entire zoom range—even when shooting wide open at f/2.8. Along with that, a newly designed 11-blade aperture helps create soft, pleasing bokeh.
  • Fast f/2.8 constant aperture allows users to capture images in dim lighting conditions and with a shallow depth of field.
  • Two ED (extra-low dispersion) and two Super ED elements, including one aspherical ED element, effectively suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations.
  • Two aspherical lenses, including one extreme aspherical lens (XA), minimize distance-related aberrations and also reduce 'onion ring' bokeh.
  • Nano AR Coating II controls flare and ghosting with support from a new optical design that reduces internal reflections.
  • An 11-blade aperture diaphragm helps create smooth, circular bokeh at all aperture settings.

Optimized for Video

Taking cues from their cinema division, Sony has optimized the 70-200mm II for video. Changes include a dramatic reduction of focus breathing and focus shift, improved autofocus performance, and a Linear Response MF system to ensure consistent, natural-feeling operation. Full-time Direct Manual Focus (DMF) also makes it easy to make quick adjustments using the focus ring while in AF modes.

The exterior design of the lens also sees some big changes. One clear example is the addition of a physical aperture ring that was not present on its predecessor. Users will be able to de-click this ring at the flip of a switch for smooth iris control during shooting. This provides shooters with independent controls for focus, zoom, and iris.

Fast Autofocus and Reliable Image Stabilization

Among the biggest improvements with the 70-200mm II is a vastly superior autofocus system. Now comprised of 4 XD Linear motors, the lens now performs up to four times faster. Focus tracking while zooming sees its own specific improvement of around 30% when compared to the previous model. Users will also enjoy high-speed continuous shooting at up to 30 fps with AF and video will benefit from the near-silent operation.

An advanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system will ensure sharp images while shooting handheld at even the longest focal lengths. Multiple modes are available, including standard, panning, and a new Mode 3 for moving subjects.

Professional Design and Durability

Being designed for professional use, the 70-200mm II has been ruggedized with advanced weather sealing. The weight has also been reduced by approximately 29%, to just under 2.3 lb, making this model among the lightest in its class. Optics have also been designed for balance with an internal zoom mechanism, minimizing front heaviness to provide a more ergonomic center of gravity.

Other features of the physical design include three programmable focus hold buttons, all located in 90-degree increments, for more tactile control over select settings in both landscape and portrait orientation. Users also have a removable tripod foot for added stability on support systems.
  • Focus range limiter switch will optimize performance and improve AF speed and responsiveness in certain shooting scenarios.
  • Zoom ring torque has been optimized.
  • Iris lock switch prevents users from accidentally moving the aperture ring to or from the auto aperture position.
  • Front lens element has a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants and makes the lens easier to clean.
  • Included lens hood features a locking button and a filter window for easier adjustment of variable filters (e.g. polarizers, ND).

Teleconverter Compatibility

The FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II is compatible with Sony's optional FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters. These teleconverters can be used while still retaining full autofocus capabilities. When used, the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters will provide effective focal lengths and apertures of 98-280mm f/4 and 140-400mm f/5.6, respectively.

Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II Reviews

I waited 4 months to write this!

I was originally going to buy version 1 of this lens simply because I hadn't kept up with the current releases at the time but after watching some product release videos etc I deemed the price difference worth it for the features. So far, there's nothing I've been able to throw at this lens that it couldn't handle in stride. From shooting wildlife stills with my Alpha 1 or motorcycle footage on my a7Siii, the focus, clarity, speed, and quality are more than I could have expected. The edges are incredibly sharp in both photos and video beyond anything I've seen in reviews. The autofocus is the fastest and quietest I've seen from any lens thus far. Paired with the Alpha 1 and the a7Siii, all three focus modes find and lock on eyes exceptionally well (birds eye af a1 only). Shooting 30fps with the a1 in my own testing I find that 99% of shots focus is usable with roughly 98% exceptional without post processing. The bokeh is incredibly smooth and creamy with no onioning. The weight balance is amazing and feels great in the hands. I'm a bigger (muscular) guy so for me this thing feels lighter than a feather and is easily carried around all day or packed with little to no impact on my bag weight. If you can find someone that has one and get it in your hands you won't want to give it back. I couldn't be happier with this lens and now I'm really excited to see what Sony does with the rest of their GM II's! It's a wonderful time to be a videographer/photographer!

Prime lens quality in a zoom

Other than it being an f/2.8, it's basically a prime lens. The images coming out of the lens are so beautiful I don't even want to edit them. And I use this on an A7iii. Handles backlit situations very well, colors are amazing, and autofocus is crazy fast / accurate.

Incredible!

I have owned all the finest 70-200 f2.8 zooms that Nikon & Canon have ever produced. This Sony beats them all hands down. This image quality is simply stunning. The most amazing feature is the ultra lightweight it offers. It feels like a 70-200 f4 or in other words featherweight! The built in iris ring is fantastic as well. There is nothing finer on planet earth!

Lovely Fast Glass

What can I say? There's nothing like f/2.8. Beautiful soft bokeh, super crisp and sharp dreamy images. My only criticism is the foot design. I carry the lens by the foot, and I can only get about 2 fingers on this foot - almost dropped it when I was using it in the garden and bumped it on something.

Better than 5 Stars

This lens is absolutely amazing in every way. Super sharp, fast focus (A7iii user) and lightweight. Best money I have spent on anything photography related. A sports shooters dream! B&H is top notch as always!

Outstanding Improvements!

I have used the Sony 24-70 GM f/2.8 for years and I always considered it a great lens. Did I think it was outstanding? No. Well the new version IS outstanding. The autofocus is fast, silent and extraordinary accurate. The lens weighs substantially less and just balances better on my A1. I love the f/stop ring and the ability to @de-click" it for video. The focus hold buttons on the lens are in exactly the right place. Yes, this lens is pricy. And yes, it's worth every penny. I'm looking forward to Sony updating the sister lens of the trinity - the 24-70 GM. Get this lens!

Oil Spots ...

After putting my name on several waiting lists since this lens was announced, I received notice from Sony the lens was available. I was thrilled to receive it and put it on my Sony a7R IVa, expecting extraordinary photos. Imagine my disappointment when a number of black spots and one black blob showed up on my photos. After testing another lens to be sure the spots were not on a dirty sensor and contacting B&H, whose personnel were extremely helpful, I have decided to return the lens. Whether the oil spots are on the outside of the lens or inside, the quality control failure makes me wonder what other hidden flaws may be lurking inside this lens.

Amazing for wedding video!

The weight is significantly lighter than any other 70-200 I've ever used and the auto focus is fast and snappy. It is a must have for professional wedding videography just for those two things. The IQ is also is on par with prime lenses. It is a bit pricey, but it is the best 70-200 on the market right now and I would highly recommend it if you are making money shooting.
