Rycote HC-15 Overview

The Rycote HC-15 is a short shotgun microphone with a 3.7" interference tube that leverages the company's audio expertise to provide a high-performing, all-purpose solution for location recording, TV/film production, and broadcast work. The electret condenser capsule features sophisticated RF shielding to reduce noise and interference, while its hypercardioid polar pattern reliably attenuates off-axis sound to provide crisp, precise speech and dialog that rivals substantially more expensive models.

The HC-15 can handle sound sources at volumes up to 133 dB SPL when operating on full 48V phantom power. The mic can also run on 24V, but with lowered SPL handling capabilities. The mic offers an extremely low self noise of 8.5 dB and a wide frequency response of 50 Hz to 20 kHz. A travel case is included, while a wide variety of Rycote windshields and mounting accessories are available separately.

What are some Rycote shockmounts that would work with this microphone? Rycote does a terrible job of not mentioning this on their website.

The Rycote HC-15 Short Shotgun Microphone can be used with a variety of Rycote shockmounts such as the Rycote 037340 Universal Shotgun Mount for Cameras and Boom Poles, the Rycote 041138 InVision On-Camera Shockmount, the Rycote 041136 INV-Lite 19 Boom Shockmount for Short Shotgun Mics, or the Rycote 042901 InVision Video Hot Shoe Microphone Suspension.

Can you power the shotgun with a AA battery or it absolutely need phantom power to work?
Asked by: Charles
The Rycote HC-15 Short Shotgun Microphone requires 24V or 48V of phantom power. It will not work with a standard battery. However, you can get a separate phantom power supply that uses a battery. For example, the Xvive Audio P1 Portable Phantom Power Supply with Rechargeable Battery (B&H # XVP1) has a built-in rechargeable battery and it's very easy to use. The Mackie M48 Single-Channel 48V Phantom Power Supply (B&H # MAM48) can be powered by a 9V battery or its included AC power supply. We do have more options. Please feel free to contact us by phone or through live chat and we will be happy to help you find the best option for your application.

How do these shotguns do outside in heat and humidity? I do a lot of nature recordings and am interested in their low self noise
Asked by: Kevin
The Rycote HC-15 Short Shotgun Microphone is not IP-rated for moisture resistance, and Rycote has not specified a maximum ambient temperature for optimal operation. As such, and until further information is made available, it should be protected from moisture and caution should be taken when using the microphone in high temperatures.
