Leverage the power of Intel 12th Gen processors with the ROG MAXIMUS Z690 HERO LGA1700 ATX Motherboard from ASUS. The motherboard is designed for gaming enthusiasts looking for robust functionality, extensive connectivity, and the ability to install resource-demanding components.

The Intel Z690 chipset enables you to take advantage of the LGA 1700 socket, four dual-channel DDR5 RAM slots, six SATA III ports, and three M.2 interfaces. You can use the included ROG Hyper DIMM.2 card to gain an additional two M.2 interfaces, expanding your storage so you can build massive gaming libraries without compromising performance. Two PCIe 5.0 x16 and one PCIe 4.0 x16 slot allow you to equip your system with a wide range of graphics and utility cards. An array of USB ports provides support for resource-demanding peripherals with USB 3.2 Gen 1, Gen 2, and Gen 2x2 Type-A and Type-C ports. Dual Thunderbolt 4 ports provide up to 40 Gb/s data-transfer speeds so you can use high-powered devices like external storage arrays, hubs, and displays while gaining daisy-chain capabilities. The ROG MAXIMUS Z690 HERO enables you to use wireless devices such as headphones, speakers, and mice with Bluetooth 5.2 technology. Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) provides wireless networking while a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port provides you with a wired connection, offering networking options essential for online gaming. Additionally, this motherboard supports Windows 10 (64-Bit) operating system and is Windows 11 (64-Bit) ready right out of the box.

Robust Power Solution

Designed to leverage the power and performance of Intel 12th Gen processors, the ROG MAXIMUS Z690 HERO is focused on enhancing the overall user experience by offering a robust power solution. MicroFine alloy chokes, premium 10K Black Metallic capacitors, 20+1 teamed power stages rated for 90A, and ProCool II connectors all work together to maintain your system's power load and ensure optimal performance while you game.

Comprehensive Cooling

Gaming for prolonged periods of time can cause heat to build up within your case, so ASUS designed the ROG MAXIMUS Z690 HERO to leverage multiple thermal solutions that efficiently dissipate heat. A VRM heatsink with an integrated aluminum I/O cover, high-conductivity thermal pad, triple M.2 heatsinks with embedded backplates, and ROG Water-Cooling Zone all work together to ensure your components stay cool. ASUS HYDRANODE allows you to connect up to a total of three fans to a single header for greater cooling support.

Whether you prefer wired or wireless networking, the ROG MAXIMUS Z690 HERO includes a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port and Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) wireless capabilities. LANGuard technology ensures you get the strongest wired signal possible with lower latency, essential for competitive online gaming.

USB Connectivity

Equipped with various ports and headers designed to provide power to external devices, you get USB 3.2 Gen 1 and Gen 2 ports, designed to provide support for resource-demanding peripherals with data-transfer speeds up to 5 and 10 Gb/s, respectively. The USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port boasts up to 20 Gb/s data transfer speeds, allowing you to use advanced devices such as audio and video interfaces. The USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port also supports up to 60W charging, ideal for powering up your mobile devices.

Thunderbolt 4

Dual Thunderbolt 4 ports located on the back panel of the ROG MAXIMUS Z690 HERO enable you to connect a wide range of power-hungry devices such as storage arrays and displays. Amazing and full featured mobo. Great for enthusiasts as well as beginners.

Happy thus far

Thus far I've been very happy and impressed with this motherboard. The BIOS update is the most confidence instilling and smooth I've dealt with so far. My only complaint is I have two USB 3 hubs that are no longer recognized by my computer. With this motherboard. They're still recognized by multiple other computers in my house. Minor frustration but still shows nothing is perfect.

So far it’s ok but it’s still to early to judge

Mildly disappointed

I've been an Asus customer for decades. While their products including this one, are usually very good. More and more they are not fully integrated into a realistic setup. The onboard display is blocked in almost every build by the cooling system especially if using water cooling. Memory is another issue. It is impossible to get these boards to run both high speed and full capacity. This is a serious problem. Some of us use these for something other than gaming and liquid nitrogen benchmarks. Like the last Asus Product (X299 Edition 30) it will not support full memory population at full speed of the RAM on the QVL list. Why advertise what can't be delivered?

Minor issues

A decent motherboard. Only issues I have is TPM 2.0 and PC chassis fans. TPM 2.0 is enable by default in bios but in windows 10 pro it can’t be recognize. According to windows 11 device health check tpm is enabled. I connected my pc chassis fans to CH_fan1 and 2 neither of these will recognized my fans even though my fans are running.

25 year builder. This board works flawlessly, the design and features are off the chart. Built with i9-12900ks, 32gb ddr5 6400mhz Gskill, 3090 Ti. This is a gamers dream. I highly recommend this board & B&H photo. Hands down superior service.

Install Issues & Tips

Yes indeed a late MB batch from 2021 had this Hero board manufactured with a defect. A capacitor was installed backwards causing debug error code 53 or resulting in not posting. The issue affected units manufactured in 2021 with the part number 90MB18E0-MVAAY0 and serial number starting with MA, MB, or MC. You can identify your part number by referring to the big square numbering label directly on the outside MB box! FYI: There is also a DDR5 memory issue! The HERO in principle can only run two modules in XMP mode (preferably 5200 40-40-40-77) and with the voltage set to 1.25V. Depending on the board and other conditions, the VDD/VDDQ voltage may need to be adjusted/increased. If 4 memory modules are inserted, the modules will only run in 4000MT/s 36-36-36-64 and will not work in the XMP mode. This is a general problem with DDR5 and Z690 boards at the moment when 4-modules are operated and inserted.

Is the ASUS Maximum Z690 you have for sale affected by the recall or are they new? Specifically, are they 'units manufactured in 2021 with the part number 90MB18E0-MVAAY0 and serial number starting with MA, MB, or MC'?
Asked by: Gene
BH Photo stating they sell new products does not answer this question. If they cannot verify new stock serial numbers that may be affected by the recall, will BH Photo cover all costs with the replacement, including return and replacement shipping costs? This ensures the customer does not pay for added shipping expenses for a NEW item.

Specs says "TPM Header". This implies TPM is not on-board? Is this board Windows 11 compatible?
Asked by: Randy L.
There are 2 types of TPM. Physical and Virtual. The TPM Header is a socket for a Physical TPM Chip. That's is optional and extra. You have to ADD that Chip. In the UEFI / Bios is a Virtual Setting for TPM. And that will meet Windows 11 Requirements. Success on your Build!
