ViewSonic VP3881 Reviews

Takes the place of 2 screens

After doing lots of reading and reviewing of screens over the last several months, I finally landed on purchasing this screen. I am a remote worker, and was using 2 screens connected through a port replicator on a laptop that I use for work. Besides the bajillion cords needed to connect those screens, they never seemed to connect well, and often needed some fussing to get the resolution and ratio right. The speakers never worked, either, so I used a separate speaker. Also, the gap between those screens became increasingly annoying to manage. If I wanted to open up a spreadsheet very widely, I had to choose one screen or the other. When moving windows out of the way, but still refer to them, I was compelled to move them completely over to the second screen, instead of just doing a small adjustment. This screen has one USB Type C cable, and it works, whether I have it connected to my Dell work computer, or my personal MacBook Pro. I also like that it's NOT SMART. Just plug, play and forget about it. The color and resolution is great, the sound is fine for collaboration with work mates. Much of the cabled mess attached to my other screens is gone, so it's more manageable. I've been using it for over a month now, and haven't had any trouble so far. Highly recommended.

Best monitor I've ever owned

I have a 2016 MacBook Pro. With the 1 USB-C cable provided with the monitor, I'm able to send the video and audio signal to the monitor, use the monitor's USB hub, and charge my MacBook, all through the 1 cable. I selected the preset "text mode" on the monitor, since I'm a software engineer that looks at text all day. It's very crisp and easy on the eyes. I have it vesa mounted to my desk. So far, I've had no issues with this monitor. I'm very impressed!

My only concern with purchasing this monitor for ...

My only concern with purchasing this monitor for photo editing purposes is that it is 8-bit+FRC as opposed to true 10-bit. I also no discussion of flicker free technology. Can any actual users of the VP3881 or VP3881a address if the lesser 8-bit bit depth is an issue/concern?
Asked by: Jon
If you work in the creative space, you have been or already are working on an 8-bit or 8-bit + FRC monitor, as this is the most common setup today

What is the difference between the VP3881 and VP3881a models?
Asked by: Jon
It is unfortunate that Viewsonic did not also take the opportunity to update the Bit Depth/Color Support to 10-bit. This omission will exclude this monitor from my consideration, and I will focus on the competing 10-bit models from LG (#38WP85C-W and 38WN95C-W) or Dell (U3821DW).

Is this a good monitor for watching Netflix?
Asked by: Harry
It's not ideal since the image will not fit the screen completely but it is usable if you can get used to it. I personally use an ultrawide monitor with my system and while it is not my main netflix watching device, when I do, it works perfectly fine.

Has anyone found the best settings for a new Mac? If I use the default display settings, everything is huge but when I scale it, the image quality gets worse and text becomes pixelated. Are these my only choices?
Asked by: Nathaniel
I had this same problem when I first connect using HDMI. Once switched to displayport, every non native resolution looks fine. Give it a try
