DJI Ronin 4D 6K Reviews

Perfect for Camera B. Only downside: No RAW

By Ernst
Rated 4 out of 5

I ordered this when it was first released, thinking I'd get the RAW capabilities. That was then stopped since RED is a bunch of greedy A%#h&#. It still has ProRes 422 which works well when matching with Mavic 3 footage. So I'm not crying over that. When using this with DJI lenses, it has a very flat lifeless image quality, nothing romantic about the material you get, so it's great for a Cam B. If you want to get those nicer shots, get the E-Mount adapter and throw on some good lenses. The menu is great and fool proof, all settings right there and buttons on the sides for ease. The handles are great and very easy to get used to, and buttons can be set to user preferences in the menu. Wish there were more options before ordering between the 5.5" screen and the 7" so you'd get that on the side. I would like the bigger screen, but the 5.5 is good enough until then. Never thought I'd use the LiDAR, but it came very handy when running full speed behind an actor in terrain and I needed to watch my footwork rather than pulling focus. Footage came out great.

So far so good.. the delivery was perfect.. everything works as it should..it is a little heavy for a one man show.. the external monitor is a must have.. so far I am very satisfied with the image quality.. I still have a lot to learn but I think it was a great buy.. will keep you guys posted.. by the way I got the e mount and the ziess bats lenses they work flawlessly..

Awesome Camera! Especially with the E-mount Lenses. Being able to have everything all in one and almost instant set up time making filming a lot more fun and enjoyable. Hopefully they will bring back a raw option in the future and have native support for more E-mount lenses

Honestly great

I was skeptical for sure. Who's this really for I thought? The answer, anyone who enjoys great image quality with almost no setup. I bought it on a whim, but I'm super impressed. No balancing when using DJI lenses, awesome stabilization, and ProRes! So far I've been using this on shoots that require motion with no 1st AC. The focus system is next level. The best part is I really don't feel like I'm compromising, I truly feel like this camera deserves its own category because it's a unique and so far wonderful experience to use. I actually used it to film a piece that aired during a performance of the Grammy's and seeing it on the big screens it totally held up. Can't say enough positive things about it.

GAME CHANGER!!

Like everyone else, I was skeptical at best, but I thought why not give it a try. Guess what? This thing is beyond phenomenal! No balancing whatsoever when using DJI lenses. The picture quality is fantastic. The tracking and autofocus are true game-changers. Just drag a box around someone's face and the camera does the rest. Every DP on set I've shown it to on set is ordering one. So glad this tool is in my arsenal. Worth every penny!

Game changer so far

Let me start with saying, I was skeptical about buying this camera. I have been a long time fs7 user and have been debating an upgrade/new camera for a long time. I wanted something that was a big advancement in every way, and the 4D looked like the moment to finally pull the trigger. Obviously the big feature is the 4th axis, and I'll get to that, but I really wanted to start with the camera system itself. The image quality is insane. Super sharp, and great depth of field even with the DJI lens lineup. I was hesitant to see if it was going to producer better images then the fs7, but for me it does. The dynamic range is huge and the images are easy to color in post. Obviously some people are going to be upset about the loss of RAW support, but for me personally I don't care. Most of what I shoot goes to social media and I edit myself, and don't need that much data. The 6k files are super easy to work with in Premier which was a big must for me. I'm a manual focus person, but the auto is just so good here that I'm starting to convert. It also has so many options for focusing and lets you switch between them super fast which is great. The ergonomics over all are amazing, there are multiple options for controlling the camera depending on how you are holding it. Now the 4th axis, it is also, very impressive. If you calibrate everything right and use the system in the correct way, it is outrageously stable. Want to sprint backwards filming someone running in front of you? It looks like its on rails. I again, was skeptical of how well it would work. I hate gamble bounce and it's the main reason I've never bought one. I'm not saying its going to work in every scenario, and it has limits, but for basic walking or running shot it is shocking how well it works to keep the camera totally level. Negatives? It is heavy, for sure. I mostly shoot short form content, and am never really holding the camera for more then a minute without breaking so for me its not a massive problem. If I was doing a longer shoot and would be holding for extended periods of time, I would probably rent and easy rig or something similar. But for me, that kinda defeats the purpose of having this all in one small package if you have to use other gear to make it work. In the included case I can fit 3 batteries, 2 cards, and 2 lenses easily, so it really has everything I need for most of the shoots I am on. Is it for everyone? No. Does it do everything it claims to do really well? Yes. Honestly it feels like the future, and now picking up my fs7 feels like a fossil by comparison.

It is ok, but please do your research before buying

I bought this with high hopes, but to be truthful I was let down from the start. B&H did a great job so nothing bad on them. The issues I have are by DJI. I watched the Vic Stah Milien video and read his quick start guide which is the only reason I gave it 4 stars. Prior to his information, it was a one-star and I was going to return it. So just do your homework before buying as it might not be what you think it is.

The Best camera

The best camera all around. The only thing for me is that it is heavy when you shoot for a long time most probably you have a long time with it in your hands.

Can I use this with an Easyrig Minimax?
Asked by: Amanda
The mounting point on the Ronin 4D handle is too much to the back (Center of gravity is completely off). You can use the original Easyrig Camera hook to mount it to the front of the handle, which covers then the buttons on the handle - so that wasn't a solution for me. My solution was to mount a Tilta Ronin 4D top handle and mount the easyrig quick release camera mount in the second mounting hole from the front. My Tilta Ronin 4D handle was too long, the camera brackets hits the handle - I had to grind down a couple of millimetres. So not perfect either. The z-axis is not working perfectly, if I use the camera on the Easy Rig - there is some jumping up and down. Its better when I release a little bit of the tension on the Easy Rig..

Can you please tell me what kind of cord I need to purchase for the DC-in port on the camera? Thanks.
Asked by: Shaun
This is the most confounding issue I have ever had with customer support on a product. You asked the same question I did. There is a dedicated DC in port on both the camera and the ultra brite monitor. One would think that it could be used to power the camera connected to a power supply of some sort if you plan to use the camera or monitor in a fixed location. I have gone round and round with DJI and no one seems to have an answer to the super simple question how can this DC port be used to power the camera? What DC power supply is recommended or supported? Or at the very least- what is the specific type of connection that is on the DC in port with pin assignment- so we can find something that will work?

Is there an auto mode for ND to be able to adjust aperture during filming and maintain constant exposure?
Asked by: Anonymous
No there isn't. This uses standard NDs therefore when you change from one to the next you will see the filter cross the frame. An auto ND is only possible using a variable ND system such as the Sony FX6.
