Voigtlander 90mm f/2.8 Apo-Skopar Overview

The 90mm f/2.8 Apo-Skopar from Voigtlander is a manual focus medium telephoto lens optimized for full-frame M-mount image sensors. The newly designed optical system uses Abnormal Partial Dispersion glass for five out of seven elements in seven groups to make images rich, three dimensional in character, and extremely sharp. It has an apochromatic design that makes axial chromatic aberration as close to zero as possible. The manual focus lens is designed for use with rangefinder-linked digital and film cameras and has a precision helicoid for smooth precise focusing action. The shortest shooting distance linked to the rangefinder is 3' (depending on the camera used).

The 10 diaphragm blades help provide a creamy bokeh suitable for portraiture. In addition, the aperture adopts a special circular shape not only at the fully-open f/2.8, but also at f/4 and f/22. This circular shape can create the cinematic flares known as "ball blur" by pointing toward a point light source.

This compact and lightweight lens does not protrude into the viewfinder frame when used on a rangefinder camera.

  • Apochromatic design that eliminates chromatic aberration
  • Optical design optimized for digital image sensors
  • Highly rigid and durable full-metal lens barrel
  • Manual focus for reliable focus operation
  • 10 apertures that become circular at open, f/4, and f/22
  • Bayonet type VM mount
  • High-precision rangefinder interlocking mechanism
  • Full-size image circle
  • Included lens hood can be reverse mounted for easy storage.

Voigtlander 90mm f/2.8 Apo-Skopar Reviews

Front focus by 2.5 inches on Leica M

A f 2.8/ 1.5 m distance this lense focusses 2.5 inches (6 cm) in front of the focus attained with the Messesucher. That is pretty bad for multiple reasons: at 90 mm you have to shoot wide open to get a decent exposure time and you cannot get the eyes in focus on the portrait. This is a consistent design flaw. There are many similar reports on the web. Why do I still use it? It is a marvelous, leightweight and affordable short tele lens for the Leica system, but you have to use focus peeking all the time or use it at f16 for landscape.

Alternative to the 90mm Elmarit

Pretty good good lens for an M10. No, it is not Elmarit quality but it is 90-95% there and that is pretty good in my book. Well constructed and designed, easy to use, with solid focus throw and control.

Nice lens for landscape & portrait

I purchased this lens for travel on landscape shooting majority. Compare Leica APO, it's petty lighter. High quality build and I do like the design of lens hood which can be reverse mounted for easy storage. The size is a little bit longer than that of Leica APO F2 50MM and almost same as Leica Super-Elmar F3.4 21MM lens, pretty compact and suitable for travel. That's the reason I choice this one. Very sharp especially @F5.6 and up, color is very accurate, similar as Leica lens. This is my first lens from Voigtlandeer and love it. High recommend this lens.

excellent build and image quality. Focusing is smooth and fast. It is a tiny bit heavier and longer than 90mm Leica lens but it is 5 times cheaper. I found it is excellent for portrait and discreet street shooting

I'm very pleased with this purchase. I've given it 4 stars though I teetered between 4 and 5. I have yet to do any serious editing but out of camera results look promising I have been using the screen to compose shots which is new for me but pleased with tone and depth. Lots to learn but this looks like it was a good choice

Light, small and nice quality

Picked this up because I wanted something with a little more focal length range, to use somewhat as a tele lens when I travel. Because I was thinking about walking around in my camera bag with it, I wanted a small and lightweight lens, which the Voiglander covers both. I didn't buy Leica for insane sharpness, but the Voigtlander is sharp as well. Super happy with this

I just received this lens but noticed that Lightroom is not applying a profile to it. I'm shooting it with an Leica M10-R. Any suggestions on how I can go about doing this?
Asked by: Jay
Here in Adobe website it does not list that lens as supported unfortunately. Another option would be a third party company that would make a lens profile as a plug in that you could add in Lightroom but doing a google search I don't see any. Another option would be to fix any distortions manually in the software. https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/supported-lenses.html

I shoot Leica M and Nikon Z. Would you recommend buying the VM version and adapt it to my Z7 or the F mount version and adapt it to my M10?
Asked by: Anthony
Although Voigtlander does not produce a Nikon Z mount version of their 90mm f/2.8 APO-Skopar Lens, it may be best for you to use the VM mount version of the lens, so that will have a direct mount to fit your Leica M camera while only using a single adapter to fit the lens onto the Z7. One such adapter is the Voigtlander VM-Z Close Focus Adapter BH #VOVMZ.
