Key Features
  • Canon EF Lens to Canon RF Camera Body
  • Maintains Autofocus, Image Stabilization
  • 0.71x Optical Multiplier
  • Supports Exif Data Transfer
This EF-R3 0.71 Speed Booster Adapter from Viltrox allows a Canon EF-mount lens to be used on a Canon RF-mount camera body and select cine bodies. A 0.71x optical multiplier is built into the unit, and electronic communication between the camera and lens is supported, enabling autofocus, image stabilization, and Exif data transfer. With some lenses, maximum focusing range maybe affected as the distance from the lens to the camera's sensor is slightly changed, and there is a 1-stop increase for the camera over the lens's aperture range. Additionally, the functions of some lenses are not fully available depending on the camera body. A micro-USB Port is provided for firmware upgrades, and the adapter features a removable foot with a 1/4"-20 tripod socket for easy mounting.

Great adapter for 4K video on the Canon EOS R

When I bought this, I thought it could be used for video and photos. Even though it can be used on photos, it's not really helpful. You would have to shoot in 1.6x crop mode on photos, so on the EOS R, you will only get a 12 MP image - not ideal. What this adapter is VERY helpful for is 4K video on the EOS R. It takes the crop from 1.74x to about 1.23x crop, which is much more manageable. Here is a real world example - let's say you want to shoot 4K video with your EF 50mm f/1.8 lens. With a regular adapter, you are now shooting with 87mm equivalent lens and at f/1.8. With using this Viltrox speedbooster / focal reducer, you are now shooting at an equivalent of about a 61mm lens with the added side benefit of an f/1.2 aperture. Another example - let's say you want to shoot a wide angle 4K video and you have an EF 16-35 F/4L IS lens. With a regular adapter, the widest you can shoot is equivalent to 28mm. With this Viltrox adapter, you can now shoot at about a 19.5mm equivalent AND at f/2.8. So there are definitely benefits to having this for 4K video on an EOS R. It may be useful on other models as well, but with differing crop factors on the different R models, you would have to do your own research. I hope this helps someone.

I shoot with RP initially, now with R6. Tried the Metabones speedbooster ( not from B&H, used ) , lots of issues. But this Viltrox speedbooster works like a charm, including EXIF, AF , aperture control, etc. Using it on Sigma Art 20/1.4 , it turns either 14mm f/1.0 (FULL sensor, with large vignetting since image is concentrated to the center of the sensor ) but you can also shoot in aspect 1:1 ( eliminates much of the vignetting but keeps many pixels, not like with the 1.6 crop where R6 goes from 20MP to 7.7MP ) , 4:3, 16:9 ... and alwasy at f/1.0 ... or 23mm f/1.0 (1.6 crop , 7.7MP) ... in video you can shoot full image at 14mm f/1.0 , again with vignetting ( which can be cropped in post, e.g. with letterbox 1:2.39 you loose the corners, or cropzoom from 4K to 1080p, or use reatively.) ... or you shoot video crop mode, no more vignetting , and 20mm lens turns 20x0.71x1.6 = 23mm equiv, but still at f/1.0 ! Likewise my Rokinon SP 35/1.2 goes to 25mm (full) or 40mm (crop1.6) and camera shows f/1.0 but in reality it goes lower, it goes f/0.85 ( the f/1.0 is digital limit from R6 firmware but you can verify how ISO or exp.comp shifts when you compare speedbooster vs. simple adapter ). Ultimately, Mitakon EF 50/0.95 goes down to f/0.68 ( though it does not show that value because it is a manual lens, no EXIF ). What does it mean ? in extreme low light you win a full aperture on any lens. My EF nifty-fifty shoots now at f/1.2 , so does my EF 85/1.8 shoot at 1.2 ... my EF 200/2.8 L shoots now at f/2.0 ... My Rokinon 24/1.4 shoots at f/1.0... gamechanger ! Can't wait to shoot realtime video of northern lights , I already have RF 35/0.95 Argus and RF50/0.95 Mitakon, they are excellent for nightsky, but now I can go even faster, allowing for lower ISO with less noise, or faster shutter speed for less motion blurr. Many photographers don't think this works, they didn't try it... the big difference is that speedboosters are made for crop sensor cameras, but now you can use it on full sensor and then you CHOOSE if you want to shoot in crop mode or full sensor mode, with vignetting or ratio crop...
