Sirui 50mm T2.9 Anamorphic FF Overview

By B&H Photo's

The Leica L-mount 50mm T2.9 Anamorphic 1.6x Lens, from Sirui, is designed for filling a theater screen with rich detail, cinematic bokeh, and artistic lens flairs. One of the signature features of this lens is that it produces horizontal blue streaks when pointed at a light source, giving your footage a dreamy or science fiction aesthetic. On full-frame cameras, this lens increases the horizontal angle of view by 60%, equivalent to a wider 31mm spherical lens, and it enables the camera to see well to the left and right of your subject. An image captured in 16:9 is de-squeezed to an anamorphic 2.8:1 aspect ratio, whereas shooting in 3:2 yields a 2.4:1 final image.

A key aspect of anamorphic lenses is oval bokeh, which can gently distort objects and lights in the distance, providing an abstract background for your actors. Its T2.9 aperture produces a shallow depth of field, blurring everything in front or behind the specifically chosen focal plane. It features female 1/4"-20 threading for mounting versatility, and its focus and aperture rings are geared for use with a follow focus system.

Sirui 50mm T2.9 Anamorphic FF Reviews

Very Impressed With This Line of Anamorphics!

I normally shoot all spherical lenses for my film work (Sigma Art Primes), so I'm very critical of things like detail and clarity. Long story short- I didn't expect much from this brand, based on things I've seen and heard about their previous offerings. This line of lenses (I have the 75mm as well) is outlandishly sharp and detailed wide open, with minimal (if any?) CA or artifacts to be seen in the frame. Anamorphic characteristics are very apparent, despite not being a true 2X lens, and flares definitely make themselves known when shooting into point light sources. I don't love the sci-fi blue color, but the overall character of them as well as the softer veiling flare from larger/softer bright light sources is very pleasing to my eye. Distortion is minimal, even on the wider 50mm. As someone shooting on a 16:9 sensor (FX3) I think Sirui struck a good balance between anamorphic squeeze vs usable real estate on common sensor sizes. I don't have to crop too much of the image out to get a more standard 2.39:1 ratio, and overall I just find the whole experience of shooting with these lenses to be tons of fun, and they really give an insane and unbeatable value for money when you compare to other full frame anamorphic options in the market right now. If you're doing a big budget project and want to shoot anamorphic, sure you can rent some of the big boys, but for everything else- these give really impressive results. T2.9 isn't super bright, but I find it hard to fault the lens or Sirui for this, as fast and anamorphic don't really belong in the same sentence together anyway. Focus and aperture gears are solid and have a nice dampening to them. Focus throw is a bit short for a cine style lens, but I use remote FF anyway, so I can dial in the focus throw manually that way. And I imagine for anyone using a manual FF or by hand it's actually nicer having a shorter throw. I've been looking for reasons to change my mind about these lenses, but after multiple projects and color tests, I just can't fault them in any serious way, regardless of price. Definitely adding these to my regular rotation. Highly recommended!

Affordable, anamorphic lens.

The results of the Anamorphic lens on the R5c are amazing. The lens has the right amount of sharpness. The bokeh and the lens flares add a nice look to your film. I plan on buying the 75mm version when it is released :)

Love it

Few people understand what does it mean anmorphic , with this full frame anmorphic you can enjoy with really depth of field as 50mm and wide view as wide angle after De-Squeeze This is a sharp lens , with videos gears like a high class but there is a disadvantage in the not correct horizon level in the corners , but i can accept that in this lens price , it is like a gift from suriu . With 8k you can crop and get the good video , so its highly recommend if you have 8k or 6k

.I would characterize myself as an amateur filmmaker, or at least a serious hobbyist, who has had no experience with cinematic lenses. This lens was an absolute blast to experiment with. It's a solidly built metal body, with smooth-turning geared focus and aperture rings. It is manual focus, but with the use of focus peaking, very sharp images can be achieved. Not coming from a cinema background, T-stops are a bit mysterious to me, but the wide T2.9 aperture (which I've read is roughly equivalent to f2.1) allows lower ISOs in low light conditions. A nice bonus is the inclusion of a lens pouch. For an example from my first shoot with this lens, visit https://youtu.be/462z64lIzUc. I look forward to playing much more with this fun lens.

Great Budget Anamorphic Lense

I have wanted an anamorphic lens for a long time. Finally broke down and got this. It's great for the actual anamorphic, but the streaking is lacking from what I was expecting. 1/2 the reason I wanted an anamorphic lense was the streaks. It also has flaring, which is to be expected when you have to shine light straight into a lense, but compared to professional movies, I wasn't expecting this.

Affordable Anamorphic

Bought this lens for a specific project... it was the only full frame anamorphic lens available in L mount, to be paired with my Panasonic Lumix BS1H. While it might not offer the image quality you get from the Atlas or other higher end lenses, it's actually quite nice. Surprisingly sharp, good colors and contrast, and a distinct anamorphic look from the x 1.6 squeeze. The words Anamorphic and Low Budget don't usually go together... but this lens, and the new 75mm that just came out, certainly make it possible!

Garbage lens for price

First of all this lens has a ton of focus breathing and distortion. Second its really really soft, third dont expect those nice oval bokeh on the background. I think it would have been a good purchase if itw as priced somewhere around 500 to 600 range. For the steep $1500 price tag this lens is absolute garbage. Stay away.

No, unfortunately, the Sirui 50mm T2.9 Full Frame 1.6x Anamorphic Lens (Sony E), cannot be adapted or modified for use with an EF mount. Mirrorless lens must be closer to the sensor, and no adapter would be able to compensate.
