Offering super-telephoto reach in a portable design, the NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S, from Nikon, is a versatile zoom well-suited for sports and wildlife applications. Covering a broad telephoto range, the lens manages to remain relatively lightweight and compact, making it ideal for travel as well, and it incorporates Inner Balance technology that maintains stability when tracking moving subjects and shooting atop a gimbal head.
Optical Design
  • Featuring a combination of two Super ED and six ED glass elements, chromatic aberrations and color fringing is effectively eliminated throughout the zoom range for notable clarity and color accuracy.
  • ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction.
Autofocus and Vibration Reduction
  • Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing throughout the zoom range. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
  • Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 2.5', along with a maximum magnification of 0.38x, benefits working with close-up subjects.
  • Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by approximately 5.5 stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations.
Handling and Design
  • Short zoom throw rotation of just 80° permits quick changing between the 100mm to the 400mm positions.
  • Updated zoom design prevents lens creep, regardless if the lens is pointing straight up or down, without having to adjust torque or tension settings.
  • Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
  • Integrated OLED lens information panel allows you to quickly confirm aperture setting, focus distance, and depth of field figures right on the lens in both bright and dark situations.
  • Two assignable L.Fn buttons work in conjunction with camera-based Fn buttons to provide seamless points for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel, along with a front fluorine coating, benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
  • Inner Balance technology helps maintain a consistent center of gravity when shifting the zoom position, offering greater stability when tracking moving subjects using a gimbal head.
  • Rotating tripod collar offers mounting stability when shooting atop a monopod or tripod.
  • Compatible with optional Z-Teleconverter TC-1.4x and TC-2x to further extend the reach of this lens.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S Reviews

Great lens!

Love this lens! It's very smooth and fluid. The focus is fast and sharp. I've been wanting this lens forever and it's everything I thought it would be. Highly recommend.

Perfect

This lens is light and focuses fast (on a Z7ii) and accurately even with a 2X teleconverter. While some reviewers have complained that the combination of this lens with the 2X produces soft images, I have found it to be more than sharp enough for my needs and a whole lot cheaper and lighter than most of the alternatives.

Excellent performance

I am a long time Nikon user, and this is my first new long telephoto zoom lens in many years. I am switching over from a 200-400mm f/4 VR. The new Z lens handily outperforms the old F mount lens in just about every way. Image quality is outstanding, focus and stabilization are distinctly better. Handling a small, light lens at these focal ranges is a joy, compared to the old beast. The "slow" aperture is perhaps the only complaint on the performance side. In low light, you really need to crank up ISO to get a fast shutter speed (eg for wildlife). The only other consideration is that it's quite expensive compared to other options from Nikon and Sigma. It's very good, but not cheap.

Perfect mate for the Z9.

Just what I wanted for my Z9. Images are extremely sharp and AF very responsive. Some people have called this a heavy lens but it is light compared to my Nikkor 200-500 f5.6 and more compact. It even weighs a little less than the the 500mm f5.6 PF. I love it!

Exceeds Expectations

This lens has fully exceeded my expectations. Smooth, clear, little big/heavy but what can you expect. Waiting on my backordered 1.4 TC to use this on more subjects.

Love it

The lens doesn't have a Memory Recall button. At this point in time the Z cameras do not have a focus point recall function that you can assign to the lens.

Since no lens case is included, does anybody have a recommendation for a 3rd party case ideally with a shoulder strap?
Asked by: Carol
I found the LowePro Lens Case 11x26 to be a great fit. Although the interior diameter is a little snug with both the reversed lens hood and the Kirk LP-70 Lens Foot attached, the vertical fit is perfect. To me, the snug diameter was preferable to the vertical gap the 13x32 leaves. If you store the lens with the foot but without the hood the fit is perfect.

How does it compare to 70-200 2.8s with 2x teleconverter( which translates to 140-400 5.6)?
Asked by: Pawel
The performance of the 70-200 f/2.8 with the 2X teleconverter is excellent. It honestly depends on the type of photography you're doing. The autofocus is pretty fast and not limited like it used to be with these 2X extenders. The image quality is a little softer than using the 70-200 without a converter but that's normal. If you find yourself needing the long range consistently, it's a better choice to just buy the 100-400. However, the 70-200 with the 2x converter is a great combo and serves to be more flexible than just having the 100-400.

I can see the advantage of Nikon Z 400mm f4.5 over Nikon Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 is 2/3 f-stop wider but it does not have versatily like that of the 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 and $550.00 more expensive. If someone can help me the following, I truly appreciate it: @400mm f5.6 for both lenses and if I crop 50% in the FX and the DX as well, would the photos be the same sharpness? Thank you
Asked by: George
Prime lenses like the Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S Lens generally have better optical quality compared to a zoom lens. The 400mm lens also has one SR (short-wavelength refractive) element. The SR element features a specialized high-dispersion design that refracts wavelengths shorter than blue; this helps achieve truly accurate color rendering and also aids in making the lens design more compact and lighter weight. Comparing both at 400mm f5.6 shows the 400mm to be slightly sharper. A zoom lens is more convenient for different types of photos. The choice of which lens to get depends on the type of photos being taken.
