Offering super-telephoto reach in a portable design, the NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S, from Nikon, is a versatile zoom well-suited for sports and wildlife applications. Covering a broad telephoto range, the lens manages to remain relatively lightweight and compact, making it ideal for travel as well, and it incorporates Inner Balance technology that maintains stability when tracking moving subjects and shooting atop a gimbal head.

Optical Design

  • Featuring a combination of two Super ED and six ED glass elements, chromatic aberrations and color fringing is effectively eliminated throughout the zoom range for notable clarity and color accuracy.
  • ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction.

Autofocus and Vibration Reduction

  • Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing throughout the zoom range. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
  • Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 2.5', along with a maximum magnification of 0.38x, benefits working with close-up subjects.
  • Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by approximately 5.5 stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations.

Handling and Design

  • Short zoom throw rotation of just 80° permits quick changing between the 100mm to the 400mm positions.
  • Updated zoom design prevents lens creep, regardless if the lens is pointing straight up or down, without having to adjust torque or tension settings.
  • Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
  • Integrated OLED lens information panel allows you to quickly confirm aperture setting, focus distance, and depth of field figures right on the lens in both bright and dark situations.
  • Two assignable L.Fn buttons work in conjunction with camera-based Fn buttons to provide seamless points for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel, along with a front fluorine coating, benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
  • Inner Balance technology helps maintain a consistent center of gravity when shifting the zoom position, offering greater stability when tracking moving subjects using a gimbal head.
  • Rotating tripod collar offers mounting stability when shooting atop a monopod or tripod.
  • Compatible with optional Z-Teleconverter TC-1.4x and TC-2x to further extend the reach of this lens.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S Reviews

A fine ACTION lens!

I decided to enter the Z system with lenses differing in focal lengths from my former F system AFs 70-200mm f2.8/f4.0 lenses. This lens is substantial, agile and fast focussing on my two Z5 bodies. I have used it for imaging children's soccer games for the past two weeks and it reliably captures the action time after time and does not deplete my cameras batteries appreciably even after 2 hours of continuous use. My low light work with the Z system will be met with the Z85mm f1.8 and the Z105mm f2.8MC lenses.

It took 6 months to get, but well worth it.

I'm still learning how to use it, but so far, the stabilization is outstanding and allows shooting hand held in most situations. It is not light, but well balanced and easy to hold. Pictures are sharp edge to edge and can be cropped pretty tight like the attached images. I use it with my Z6. It is well built and a great addition to my gear.

Excellent lens

Own this lens, purchased from B&H. It's excellent, it's very similar in size and feel to the 70-200mm 2.8 S, which I also own. The 100-400 is very sharp and a lot of the shots look almost as good as the 70-200.

Well worth the wait !!!

This lens replaces Nikon second model of the 80-400. First and most obviously at 400mm the new lens at the center and corners is sharper. It much easier to zoom. Finally it looks to be mostly medal.

The lens came last week. I took it out to spots I had been visiting for the last year. The quality of the images increased so much it was hard to believe. It captured detail with great focus. Lighting was difficult, just after a rain storm. Birds in soft light, dappled light, in flight, against the usual variety of backgrounds, all came out impressively. The percentage of images that had to be considered for editing went way up. Nikon did a great job with this lens.

Great Zoom Lens

This lens takes great photos, they are crisp and clear from corner to corner, with almost no field-curvature or color aberrations. If you add a Nikon Z 1.4x teleconverter the photos are still outstanding, and adding the 2x TC only softens the corners a tiny bit. The Bokeh is very nice, and the optical stabilization of over 5 stops is helpful. The two accompanying photos were handheld, the cardinal photo was taken with adding the Z 2x TC at 800mm, shot through a double paned window and cropped.

Love It!

After a long time on backorder, the lens finally arrived. I love the relative small form factor and weight. It makes beautiful images paired with a Z6. Works well with the 1.4x teleconverter.

The lens doesn't have a Memory Recall button. At this point in time the Z cameras do not have a focus point recall function that you can assign to the lens.

Since no lens case is included, does anybody have a recommendation for a 3rd party case ideally with a shoulder strap?
Asked by: Carol
I have the Lowepro Lens Case 13x32. It's a very nice case but a bit bigger than this 100-400 needs. I purchased it for the larger Nikon 200-500 for which it is a perfect fit.

How does it compare to 70-200 2.8s with 2x teleconverter( which translates to 140-400 5.6)?
Asked by: Pawel
The performance of the 70-200 f/2.8 with the 2X teleconverter is excellent. It honestly depends on the type of photography you're doing. The autofocus is pretty fast and not limited like it used to be with these 2X extenders. The image quality is a little softer than using the 70-200 without a converter but that's normal. If you find yourself needing the long range consistently, it's a better choice to just buy the 100-400. However, the 70-200 with the 2x converter is a great combo and serves to be more flexible than just having the 100-400.

Is the lens foot arca Swiss compatible?
Asked by: Dennis
Because the Nikon replaceable foot for this lens is the same as the foot for the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR-S you can use any Arca Swiss foot made for that lens. The Kirk LP-70 is one popular choice: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1595112-REG/kirk_lp_70_replacement_foot_for_nikon.html Really Right Stuff makes one also, but it is typically harder to find: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1623683-REG/really_right_stuff_lcf_21_foot_for_nikkor_z.html

Does this lens come with a removable rotating collar? If not, is it possible to fit a third party collar?
Asked by: Ravi
While the collar is not removable, the foot is. There are a number of third party replacement feet available. The foot is identical to the one on the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8.
