Offering super-telephoto reach in a portable design, the NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S, from Nikon, is a versatile zoom well-suited for sports and wildlife applications. Covering a broad telephoto range, the lens manages to remain relatively lightweight and compact, making it ideal for travel as well, and it incorporates Inner Balance technology that maintains stability when tracking moving subjects and shooting atop a gimbal head.

Optical Design

  • Featuring a combination of two Super ED and six ED glass elements, chromatic aberrations and color fringing is effectively eliminated throughout the zoom range for notable clarity and color accuracy.
  • ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction.

Autofocus and Vibration Reduction

  • Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing throughout the zoom range. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
  • Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 2.5', along with a maximum magnification of 0.38x, benefits working with close-up subjects.
  • Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by approximately 5.5 stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations.

Handling and Design

  • Short zoom throw rotation of just 80° permits quick changing between the 100mm to the 400mm positions.
  • Updated zoom design prevents lens creep, regardless if the lens is pointing straight up or down, without having to adjust torque or tension settings.
  • Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
  • Integrated OLED lens information panel allows you to quickly confirm aperture setting, focus distance, and depth of field figures right on the lens in both bright and dark situations.
  • Two assignable L.Fn buttons work in conjunction with camera-based Fn buttons to provide seamless points for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel, along with a front fluorine coating, benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
  • Inner Balance technology helps maintain a consistent center of gravity when shifting the zoom position, offering greater stability when tracking moving subjects using a gimbal head.
  • Rotating tripod collar offers mounting stability when shooting atop a monopod or tripod.
  • Compatible with optional Z-Teleconverter TC-1.4x and TC-2x to further extend the reach of this lens.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S Reviews

NIKKOR Z 100-400mm Lens

I am an amateur bird photographer and my usual rig is a D500 with an Nikon 200-500 lens. This is a heavy package which I wear on a Spider Belt. For overseas travel I wanted less weight so the Z50 with the 100-400 lens weighs 4 pounds and I'm obtaining wonderful photos. It is also smaller and thus easier to pack. Will add a 1.4 teleconverter once back in stock to get the reach I need. Couldn't be happier with the lens.

An incredible lens!

This lens has been very exciting to use and has a very fast focus. I notice a big difference with the camera's ability to focus on a fast moving subject vs. my other lens that I used with the converter. I have used it to photograph whales and dolphins as well as a landscape from a moving car and have been extremely pleased with my image results, very sharp photos. It is the perfect wildlife lens for my Nikon z7ii.

Great lens, but sometimes I need an f/2.8 in really low ligh

This lens works great with my Nikon Z9. It's awesome for most shooting, even at f/5.6 at 400mm. I use my F mount 70-200mm f/2.8 in poor lighting conditions, but the Z9 ISO/noise is so good, I'm able to use slower lenses and still take great shots.

More Useful than Expected

This is more about me that the lens itself which an excellent performer and handles superbly well. I often pair this with my Z 24-70 2.8 for a compact kit unless there's going to be little light. The 30mm gap hasn't been a problem...so far.

Fantastic and Versatile Lens

This is a fantastic and versatile lens. The lens is sharp and the focus is fast and accurate. The lens is well balanced and handles well. A LOT of people complain about the collar foot. There are a lot of different mount systems, so Nikon is not going to make a lens foot specific to any particular one. I highly recommend getting this - Kirk LP-70 Lens Foot for Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S & Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S Lens if you are partial to arca swiss. The zoom is traversed in 1/4 turn making it easy to stay on the action. The lens is super-well balanced, with or without the foot.

Amazing lens!

After playing around with my Z5 and 24-70 I realized that I needed something to be able to reach out and get better photos of the birds I was so desperately trying to see. After waiting months, I finally was able to get this lens. I will say, I had a bit of help from Reddit. A kind stranger in the Nikon subreddit, mentioned that B&H had the lens back in stock. Luckily I was able to react fast enough, I bought the lens. The next day it was on back order again. After getting the lens in, very quickly might I add (thanks B&H), I immediately went in the backyard to get some photos. It's a decent sized lens, but the weight is what threw me off. I'm not sure if I just wasn't expecting the weight or what, but it seemed a bit on the heavy side. Now that I'm used to it, I don't really notice it anymore. It is very well balanced, when mounted though. Quality is great, and speed of focus is great. I don't use the memory functions, so I won't comment on those, but I do like the multiple readings display. All in all, amazing lens. Very happy with my purchase. Now to decide what lens is next.

The Nikon Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S lens is my first piece of native glass for the Z9. The lens is well built, compact, and well balanced, with lightning fast focusing. The built in VR which utilizes the cameras IBIS is amazing.

Replacing my 200-500 with the 100-400 for Z system. It's lighter, easier to hold and sharper too. I use this for mostly Yacht Racing Photography (Sports). I have had it hit with salt water spray and just wipe it down when I get home. Overall a great lens....

The lens doesn't have a Memory Recall button. At this point in time the Z cameras do not have a focus point recall function that you can assign to the lens.

Since no lens case is included, does anybody have a recommendation for a 3rd party case ideally with a shoulder strap?
Asked by: Carol
I have the Lowepro Lens Case 13x32. It's a very nice case but a bit bigger than this 100-400 needs. I purchased it for the larger Nikon 200-500 for which it is a perfect fit.

How does it compare to 70-200 2.8s with 2x teleconverter( which translates to 140-400 5.6)?
Asked by: Pawel
The performance of the 70-200 f/2.8 with the 2X teleconverter is excellent. It honestly depends on the type of photography you're doing. The autofocus is pretty fast and not limited like it used to be with these 2X extenders. The image quality is a little softer than using the 70-200 without a converter but that's normal. If you find yourself needing the long range consistently, it's a better choice to just buy the 100-400. However, the 70-200 with the 2x converter is a great combo and serves to be more flexible than just having the 100-400.

Is the lens foot arca Swiss compatible?
Asked by: Dennis
Because the Nikon replaceable foot for this lens is the same as the foot for the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR-S you can use any Arca Swiss foot made for that lens. The Kirk LP-70 is one popular choice: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1595112-REG/kirk_lp_70_replacement_foot_for_nikon.html Really Right Stuff makes one also, but it is typically harder to find: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1623683-REG/really_right_stuff_lcf_21_foot_for_nikkor_z.html

Does this lens come with a removable rotating collar? If not, is it possible to fit a third party collar?
Asked by: Ravi
While the collar is not removable, the foot is. There are a number of third party replacement feet available. The foot is identical to the one on the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8.
