All-in-One Versatility
A truly versatile everyday lens, the NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S, from Nikon, is a wide-angle to short-telephoto zoom covering an extremely useful range of focal lengths to benefit a variety of applications from landscape to portraiture. The constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and the lens features an advanced optical design for high sharpness and clarity. As a go-to lens for a majority of needs, this lens also sports a relatively compact and lightweight design.
Optical Design
  • Featuring a combination of three ED elements, one aspherical ED element, and three aspherical elements, both chromatic and spherical aberrations are effectively eliminated throughout the zoom range for notable sharpness and clarity.
  • ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction.
Autofocus
  • Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing throughout the zoom range. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
  • Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
  • Dedicated manual focus ring at the rear of the lens for tactile and precise control over the focus position.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 1.1', along with a maximum magnification of 0.39x, benefits working with close-up subjects.
Handling and Design
  • Programmable Control Ring can be used to control aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation.
  • Assignable L.Fn button works in conjunction with camera-based Fn buttons to provide seamless points for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel, along with a front fluorine coating, benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S Reviews

Not Sharp (at all!)

I was really excited about this lens. I liked the extra range, and I REALLY liked the weight savings over the 24-70 f/2.8, but I was shocked the lack of sharpness. I shot a comparison of a subject using this lens against the Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 at the same focal length, and the difference was dramatic. Used the same body, same aperture, same shutter speed, same everything. I shot 27 exposures with each lens, and the difference was equally dramatic in each exposure. Very disappointed in this one, and will be returning it.

It's just such a great lens

When the Nikon Z7 first came out with the 24-70 f4 kit lens, I was surprised at how great the quality and versatility were. I recently purchased the 24-120 for a trip with my Z9 and fell in love with it. That extra 50mm of reach makes a world of a difference. The lens is sharp, it's a great size, and it just feels right. It covers a wide range of use without sacrificing image quality or aperture speed. If you're thinking about purchasing this lens, do it! You won't regret it!

This lens is just real close to theZ 24-70m S. It's f4 but I use it for event photography on my z6ii. It almost never comes off.

Outstanding go-to lens

Outstanding edge 2 edge sharpness from wide angle to moderate telephoto. Perfect go to lens for my Nikon z5. Looks and feels like a professional lens. Haven't had any problems w f/4...just crank up the iso a bit!

Great everyday lens

I have both the f mount as well as the s series lens. If you don't have the f mount lens this is a great lens to own as it is sharp, fast focusing and has the advantage of a programmable lens button as well as a programmable focusing ring. If you already own the f mount and have a Zii adapter it is a tougher decision. The f mount still focuses quickly, is also sharp but is sl heavier and I believe sl larger. Both are quality lens so you won't go wrong with either

I purchased this lens to go with my Z6ii. It is the perfect all purpose lens with a constant f4.

Great lens for travel, concerts, portrait and street photo

The lens is beautiful. Crystal sharp at all focal lengths. As a portrait painter, for example, it is almost as good as an apochromatic Laowa 90mm fix lens I have: the image is sharp over the entire area of the frame. When traveling, it is beautiful and a must-have: being quite compact (only slightly larger than 24-70 f4 S), it did not require a new photo bag, but it allows me to photograph both expanded views at short focus and take beautiful zoom pics of remote objects. In addition, it can be called a macro lens in some way: you can shoot from a distance of 35 cm and get pretty large images of insects (however, let's be honest, of course, it cannot be called a full-fledged macro lens, but it does not pretend to be). My verdict: the lens is very good! He also performed remarkably well during the photo and video recording of the concert: matrix stabilization was enough, and the f4 aperture was also enough. When photographing a portrait close-up, for example, at a focal length of 80-90 mm, this value is enough for a very good bokeh background blur. The quality of the assembly and materials is also on top. The autofocus speed does not cause any complaints.

The must-have Z lens, period.

The ubiquitous 24-120. I believe Canon made it ultra popular with their L version way back when which quickly became the must-have lens for video. Well, Nikon finally decided to put a flag on that ship and their entry is truly a stellar lens. The sharpness across the entire zoom range, edge to edge, is outstanding. You look at the results and question whether or not you were using a zoom lens! The focus is lightning fast and virtually silent. Love it. Using on a Nikon Z8, the f4 isn't a problem. I've shot indoor volleyball with it at 1/640th, f4, ISO 3200 and the results are amazing (see reduced sample included). Couldn't be happier with this lens.

Does this add IS, like the Canon and Sony equivalent do?
Asked by: Clayton
This lens does not have built-in Vibration Reduction (VR) since all Nikon Z full frame cameras have built-in 5 axis In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS). Therefore the lens does not require it. However, if used on other non-IBIS cameras, such as the Dx APS-C models (Z50 and Zfc), there would be no VR.

Does the zoom feature on this Nikon Z 24-120mm extend the lens barrel out from the camera body or does the lens length remain constant? Anyone know the Nikon nomenclature for this type of spec?
Asked by: Chris
This lens will extend when zoomed. See video to view the extension: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAb13sFeIYE Note that the lens DOES have Internal Focusing (IF), that means it will NOT change size during M or AF focusing, just with zooming.
