All-in-One Versatility
A truly versatile everyday lens, the NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S, from Nikon, is a wide-angle to short-telephoto zoom covering an extremely useful range of focal lengths to benefit a variety of applications from landscape to portraiture. The constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and the lens features an advanced optical design for high sharpness and clarity. As a go-to lens for a majority of needs, this lens also sports a relatively compact and lightweight design.
Optical Design
  • Featuring a combination of three ED elements, one aspherical ED element, and three aspherical elements, both chromatic and spherical aberrations are effectively eliminated throughout the zoom range for notable sharpness and clarity.
  • ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction.
Autofocus
  • Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing throughout the zoom range. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
  • Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
  • Dedicated manual focus ring at the rear of the lens for tactile and precise control over the focus position.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 1.1', along with a maximum magnification of 0.39x, benefits working with close-up subjects.
Handling and Design
  • Programmable Control Ring can be used to control aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation.
  • Assignable L.Fn button works in conjunction with camera-based Fn buttons to provide seamless points for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel, along with a front fluorine coating, benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Great balue lens

Absolutely my goto lens if I need a zooo

I held off going to full frame (until D800E - 850) because I loved my 17-55 f2.8, I dabbled with mirrorless for improved video and eventually got hooked. And now the 24-120 f/4 S on my Z9 or 7II is my goto lens for just about everything, I may put on the 85 S f/1.8, 70-200 S or the Sigma 135 f/1.8 for dedicated portrait work if I know i have plenty of working space and bokeh is critical, but otherwise this lens stays on the camera. Places I use it almost exclusively: Video!, afternoon walks in the wood, dedicated landscape work, outdoor/indoor portraits. competitors on my shelf: 24-70 f/2.8 & 4; 70-200 f/2.8, 85 f/1.8, 50 f/1.8 35 f/1.8....

Exceptional image quality on a versatile lens

The lens is perfect for my Z6ii. It balances perfectly with the body, focus is fast and quiet, and most importantly superb image quality. I don't mind the f4 maximum aperture since the Z6ii is a beast in low-light. I never regretted my decision buying this lens over the more expensive and much heavier 24-70mm f/2.8. This is the only lens I'm ever going to need for travel. I had a hard time finding this lens in my country (Philippines), the local price is almost double the standard price and I had to wait a month or two for it to arrive. I was a bit hesitant but finally bought this lens from B&H. Delivery was fast, I only had to wait a week before I got my hands on this, it only took 3 days for it to arrive in my country and another 4 days for customs clearance and delivery. Thank you so much B&H!

A conundrum of a lens

So, after 7 months of using this lens, I have mixed feelings. ***The sharpness is incredible. ***However, beware that f/8 and even f/11 has a shallower depth of field than most lenses. *** Bokeh can be annoying and harsh at times ***Be very careful how you shoot with this at 24mm. At wide angles the distortion is very disturbing and not fixable in software. It has the most distortion of any wide angle lens (prime or zoom) I have ever used. So be careful how you shoot. I use it on a Z9. It is certainly a great choice if you need to take one lens. I shoot in very dsty and sandy aces so I carry three bodies with three different lenses with me on those assignments. I never take the lens off when I am in the field in such environments... So the convenience is great of having a 24-120 that is this sharp. I can live with the bokeh, but the DOF issue and the wide angle distortion is tough....

Excellent all around lens. Lightweight and great in low light.

55mm Longer at 120mm Focal Length

The B and H comparison chart was misleading. Under Length at Maximum Extension it reads Not Applicable. At the 120mm focal length the lens length is about 175mm compared to about 120mm at the 24mm focal length. Still getting to know the lens but have been exploiting the flexibility.

Very smooth operation

Both focus and zoom operations are smooth with no slack. Focus is instantaneous with the Z9.

Best Lens for Landscape

This lens does it all. Very sharp from 24-120mm at f/4. It zooms easy but not lose. It extends zooming in. It build very sturdy but not too heavy to carry around with a Nikon Z6/7. Lens hood is very simple build. With Nikon I know they will clean when it is time. Other brands have great lenses too. Perhaps those are often not serviceable like I experienced with Sony.

Does this add IS, like the Canon and Sony equivalent do?
Asked by: Clayton
This lens does not have built-in Vibration Reduction (VR) since all Nikon Z full frame cameras have built-in 5 axis In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS). Therefore the lens does not require it. However, if used on other non-IBIS cameras, such as the Dx APS-C models (Z50 and Zfc), there would be no VR.

Does the zoom feature on this Nikon Z 24-120mm extend the lens barrel out from the camera body or does the lens length remain constant? Anyone know the Nikon nomenclature for this type of spec?
Asked by: Chris
This lens will extend when zoomed. See video to view the extension: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAb13sFeIYE Note that the lens DOES have Internal Focusing (IF), that means it will NOT change size during M or AF focusing, just with zooming.

This NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S Lens would offer better lens coatings, a stepping motor for quiet autofocus when shooting video and a direct Z mount which will free you up from using an adapter.
