A truly versatile everyday lens, the NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S, from Nikon, is a wide-angle to short-telephoto zoom covering an extremely useful range of focal lengths to benefit a variety of applications from landscape to portraiture. The constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and the lens features an advanced optical design for high sharpness and clarity. As a go-to lens for a majority of needs, this lens also sports a relatively compact and lightweight design.

Optical Design

  • Featuring a combination of three ED elements, one aspherical ED element, and three aspherical elements, both chromatic and spherical aberrations are effectively eliminated throughout the zoom range for notable sharpness and clarity.
  • ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction.

Autofocus

  • Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing throughout the zoom range. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
  • Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
  • Dedicated manual focus ring at the rear of the lens for tactile and precise control over the focus position.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 1.1', along with a maximum magnification of 0.39x, benefits working with close-up subjects.

Handling and Design

  • Programmable Control Ring can be used to control aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation.
  • Assignable L.Fn button works in conjunction with camera-based Fn buttons to provide seamless points for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel, along with a front fluorine coating, benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S Reviews

Best standard lens for Z system

This is a great lens in a great system. I am totally impressed with all of the Z lenses that I have, but this one is on the camera 90% of the time. While some want the extra stop of a 2.8 lens, the loss of reach from 70 or 75 to 120 means that many situations will require a lens change that will not with this. Couple this with a 14-30 and you can photograph most everything. The 24-200 is a good lens but more susceptible to flare and ghosting, also it is not an S lens. Just get this when you can.

Perfect one lens solution

Previously I used 24-70 f4 but many times I needed a longer focal length. This lens is perfect. And if I need a larger f stop, I always have my primes.

Not the best all-around

Unfortunately, B&H doesn't sell Nikon lenses to Canada. So, I'm going to review the lens I purchased a week ago in Toronto. The main goal was to compare this lens to Nikon Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR I owe for 2 years. Skipping the details, the testing result are the following: both lenses provide almost identical quality in the center- and APSC frame. The corners are visibly better on 24-120. I also like the A-M switch on new lens. However, I found no real advantages over older lens. For my practical, tripod supported, landscape shooting with f=11...16 (and online publishing) I see NO difference in quality. Again, I do not print pics. From the other hand, 80mm focus length difference as a huge. So, I'll keep both lenses. For those who want a light and small universal travel glass. I'd recommend cheaper 24-200.

Sharp lens with a wide sweet spot

I am amazed at the quality of the focal range of this lens. Yes it is sharp, but its sharpness extends across a broad sweet spot from wide-open to f/8 and even f/11. A perfect lens for travel, especially on a high resolution camera like the Z7. Truly awesome! So glad that I switched to mirrorless and more particularly the Nikon Z system.

Welcome addition to the Z mirrorless group.

This is my go to lens for travel and just about all other things I photograph. I have had the same lens for many years in the regular Digital format. This lens seems to be sharper edge to edge and is better balanced for the Z series bodies. I'm happy that I don't have to use an adapter with my old 24-120. Love the focus touch up ability as I'm still very critical with the auto focus of the older version. Now I rarely have to use it. Makes life faster and more easy to work with in fast moving situations. Still waiting for the 100-400 to become available.

High Quality Z Lens from Nikon

I also have this lens for Nikon's F mount. Nikon's usual solid build for their Z lens. Sharp focus. As a professional photographer, I will be using this lens every day out in the field and expect it to last for for years. B&H was helpful in their end as they always are.

Amazing lens

An amazing lens that maintains the level of sharpness to the edges at any focal plane of the photograph. In addition, it controls reflections very well without necessarily having the lens hood on. Personally, I have always preferred the 24-120mm over the 24-70mm for its greater reach and versatility. It is true that is an f4 but it is completely justified for the type of work I do. Having a 24-120mm with this image quality and dynamism is above its predecessor in the f mount version. Highly recommended I can't say anything negative about this simply amazing lens.

One of the best ever

This lens is amazing. An all around gem. For event or general purpose photos, this is the one to get. I've had the 14-30 and have the 70-200. This one now fits the sweet spot to carry daily. I do a lot of event work and finally have one that's wide enough but can give me that reach when clients want close-ups. Great red carpet lens too. I can't wait to do some landscape work with it. Attaching some shots. It's sharp and fast to focus. Zoom is definitely stiffer than others but that will help with creep I think. For real estate you'll want to go wider. I'm glad I finally got this 24-120 in my kit.
