A truly versatile everyday lens, the NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S, from Nikon, is a wide-angle to short-telephoto zoom covering an extremely useful range of focal lengths to benefit a variety of applications from landscape to portraiture. The constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and the lens features an advanced optical design for high sharpness and clarity. As a go-to lens for a majority of needs, this lens also sports a relatively compact and lightweight design.

Optical Design

  • Featuring a combination of three ED elements, one aspherical ED element, and three aspherical elements, both chromatic and spherical aberrations are effectively eliminated throughout the zoom range for notable sharpness and clarity.
  • ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction.

Autofocus

  • Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing throughout the zoom range. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
  • Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
  • Dedicated manual focus ring at the rear of the lens for tactile and precise control over the focus position.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 1.1', along with a maximum magnification of 0.39x, benefits working with close-up subjects.

Handling and Design

  • Programmable Control Ring can be used to control aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation.
  • Assignable L.Fn button works in conjunction with camera-based Fn buttons to provide seamless points for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel, along with a front fluorine coating, benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S Reviews

Great super sharp lens

Match sharper than my 85 f1.8 af-s or my 50 f1.8 af-s on my D850. I shoot weddings and I cant put both in same album because its make my D850 photos to look unsharp.

Replaces my F-mount version well. Love the L-fn button.

I'd been using the F-mount version with an FTZ adapter, but won't need it in the future, because this one is sharper and more compact and has a handy L-fn button which I assign to AE lock or AF lock, depending on what I'm shooting. Quite handy!

A must have for event photographers

I have the F mount version as well and you just can't go wrong with this lens, and it's at a great price point. Sure it's not 2.8 but I personally feel the extra range you get with this lens, how light it is, that it's not $3k, it's worth it. The zoom ring on this lens is pretty stiff and I hope that loosens up, but I still have to give it a 5-star rating.

I was working with a lady that owns one of these. We were testing it on a z7ii. I was very impressed by the sharpness. Focus was fast and accurate. No sounds at all from the lens as it focuses. It felt very satisfying in the hands. Not cheap feeling at all. very nice weight to it. One day I will have one of these. I'm careful with my money, and this lens would not cause me to think twice before buying.

A Travel Lens Par Excellence

The 24-120mm focal range is perfect for me in a travel lens. Especially when traveling by air and for a one lens casual walkaround, this lens will serve me well.

Awesome all-around zoom!

Nikon is on a roll and this new 24-120mm f/4 is at the head of the parade. Super sharp, great contrast and color. This great lens does it all portraits, landscape, and street photography.

Great Lens

It's a great lens with very useful focal range for travel/landscape photography. I received two copies that both have very accurate AF performance. However, compared to the Z 24-70/4, both are less sharp in the corners wide open for the entire focal range between 24 and 70mm. This is lens is meant to be shot between 8 and 11 anyways. I have no qualms given how much more reach this lens offers. If you only need to carry one lens, this is the one. But, if you can carry two, I would keep the 24-70/4.

Does this add IS, like the Canon and Sony equivalent do?

This lens does not have built-in Vibration Reduction (VR) since all Nikon Z full frame cameras have built-in 5 axis In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS). Therefore the lens does not require it. However, if used on other non-IBIS cameras, such as the Dx APS-C models (Z50 and Zfc), there would be no VR.

Does the zoom feature on this Nikon Z 24-120mm extend the lens barrel out from the camera body or does the lens length remain constant? Anyone know the Nikon nomenclature for this type of spec?
Asked by: Chris
This lens will extend when zoomed. See video to view the extension: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAb13sFeIYE Note that the lens DOES have Internal Focusing (IF), that means it will NOT change size during M or AF focusing, just with zooming.

I've been very please with the Z 24-70 F/4 S that I purchased with my Z5. This 24-120 would be a replacement for the 24-70, rather than an additional lens, unless there were optical compromises needed to get the extra reach. Yes?
Asked by: John
I have done some test chart shootings comparing the two. At wide open, my copy of the Z 24-70/4 is sharper than the 24-120 for the entire focal range between 24 and 70. The weakest FL is 24 for the 24-120.
