Singh-Ray R-53 overview

  • 1Description

Well-suited to photographing sunsets and sunrises with flat or well-defined horizon lines, the 84 x 120mm Daryl Benson Reverse Graduated Neutral Density 0.9 Filter from Singh-Ray is a specialized graduated filter for selectively balancing high contrast situations. Compared to a traditional grad ND, this filter's 0.9, 3-stop density is in the center of the filter plane and transitions toward one edge while leaving half of the filter area clear to receive full exposures. This configuration is ideal for sunrises and sunsets where the brightest part of the scene is centrally located and is surrounded by a darker foreground and sky. The filter is constructed from optical resin that is both durable and helps to maintain high clarity, and it is compatible with the Cokin P filter holder.

Reverse graduated filter places the most density in the middle of the filter and tapers to one edge in order to accommodate bright horizons and other situations where the brightest part of the image lies in the middle of the composition.
Neutral density 0.9 provides a 3 stop reduction in light in selective areas.
Constructed from optical resin for overall clarity and durability.
Compatible for use with the Cokin P filter holder.
Included filter pouch protects the filter when not in use.

    Singh-Ray R-53 reviews

84 x 120mm Daryl Benson Reverse Graduated Neutral Density 0.9 Filter is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 30.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent filter for sunrise/sunset Since the edge transition is a little more distinct than a regular soft grad, this filter is easier to line up with the horizon when it is dark outside. Use it regularly with consistently excellent results. Can save time since you have less need for bracketing and less work during post production merging multiple exposures. The filter is not heavy and comes in a nice protective pouch. Color cast is minimal compared to filters from some other brands. Worth the investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy It! I'm very glad I bought this filter. On a recent trip to the Smokies, I knew I was going to photograph sunrise and sunsets. This filter really helped in getting a better exposure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have for sunrise/sunset This is a go-to filter for landscape shooters. While digital blending is always an option, I prefer to get as close to the finished shot as possible in a single frame. The reverse grad puts the darkest portion right where you need it leaving the sky at the edge of the frame untouched. While this fits in a Cokin P holder, I just hand hold it in front of my lens. Works like a champ. This isn't a cheap $20 filter but it's worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this filter I had been wanting this filter for awhile. With a planned trip to the NC mountains, I knew it would come in handy for the contrast between the mountains and sky where I would be photographing at sunset and sunrise. The weather did not cooperate much on the trip but I love the effect of the filter. It is a great addition to my photography gear. I would definitely purchase it again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Filter Before I bought this ND grad, I had scratched up my 2-stop soft transition filter, so I had to replace it. I figured that in addition to the replacement, I'd pick this up. It works similarly to a hard transition ND grad, and I'm finding that I'm using it more often than my 2-stop grads. I'm not exactly sure the reverse grad does that much good, but I think I'd buy this again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from exactly as advertised This does an excellent job of holding back the bright sunlight during a sunrise or sunset, yet still allowing you to get good color on the foreground without having to use HDR. Use it when the sun is low or even when just the sunlight is very bright near the horizon and you'll get great color without washed out skies. A carrying case is included.
