This battery works well but it's heavy and its charge doesn't last as long as I might have expected when I am taking a lot of photographs, even when they are all stills, not videos. The fault may lie with the Nikon Z9 camera, which I suspect eats up a lot of electrical power with every shot, even when in the Manual mode. I have to change the battery nearly every day when I am taking a lot of photographs. In contrast, the batteries in my Nikon D810 typically last for several days, even though they are smaller. I usually shoot manual photos, without automatic focusing, because I often photograph very small objects in the wild, such as tiny insects, on uneven surfaces, where automatic focusing is unreliable.

This battery is fantastic and powers my Z9 endlessly. The only downside is it is pretty expensive
Plenty of power for a shooting day

I recently shot more than 7,000 images over a 10 hour period and still had 51% of my battery power left according to my Z9 battery information. Using the D version of the EN-EL Nikon battery means it can stand up for a shooting day as well as Nikon's prior flagship cameras that were DSLRs.
Gets the job done reliably.

I have tried third party batteries with mostly poor results. For this reason I have pretty much kept to Factory Originals for the past 7-8 years. The price hurts, but the poor performance and unreliable charging I experienced with 3rd party batteries hurts much more.

Can this battery used in the Nikon D5 in replacement of the Enel 18a?
Just as a quick test, I was able to run the D6, D5, and D500 (with grip obviously) with an EN-EL18D. They all started up correctly, were able to read capacity and shutter actuations on the battery, and took/recorded images. It wasn't a long term test, but they all appeared to be working. I don't have a D4/s or D850 so I couldn't try either of those.
Also, for reference. The Z9 was able to run with EN-EL18a and EN-EL18c batteries, though just from a capacity standpoint they should last for less shots.

How long is this battery expected to last during photography while fully charged?
The CIPA rating is no where close to actual performance. Im not sure how they test it, but in my experience so far it is amazing in the Z9. Easily getting over 2000 shots with normal wildlife shooting during a day, with over 50% left on the indicator.

can this battery be charged in the older MH26A (2 slots) charger and with the prior EN-EL18C batteries?
No, the only supported charger is the new MH-33. None of the MH-26 chargers are compatible with this battery.
