Samyang 12mm f/2.0 AF Reviews

My New Favorite Lens!

I recently added a APSC system alongside my full frame, and bought this lens for a convention I just photographed. It's wide enough to capture full groups, low angles, small rooms, etc. It's also VERY lightweight, very sharp, and fast.

Not Compatible with X-H2S

Decent enough. Would be 4 stars if worked. I've been using video mainly and does will with fuji's minor crop in 4k, however DOES NOT WORK WITH H-H2S currently. I hope they fix soon. Not sure but I think it is updatable but requires their dock as far as I can tell. Seems the Viltrox 13mm works based on BH compatibility charts. Maybe consider that one instead.

I like it, I don't love it

I've owned the lens for about 6 months now and feel ready to share my thoughts: First why I bought this lens. I routinely shot two camera bodies, one with the XF 16mm 1.4, the other with the XF 10-24. This set up, simply became too cumbersome and slow. I wanted the 16 to be wider, and I wanted the 10-24 to be faster. I also much prefer the shooting experience of primes over zooms. In terms of threading the needle between the 10-24 and the 16 1.4, this lens does and admirable job, while also leaving a bit to be desired. Pros: The size and weight are perfect for the fuji bodies. I shoot mine on an X-T2, but I'd be very confident the lens would handle well on an X-E4, or an X-T30, or any of Fuji's smaller bodies. Anther huge factor for me personally is the 62mm filter thread. I use this alongside the 23mm f/1.4 and the 56mm f/1.2, which also use 62mm threads. This allows me to use a small filter kit across all my lenses. AF. No complaints. You'd never know it's a 3rd party lens. The 12mm focal length is a joy to shoot with. It's wide, but not weirdly wide. On this, the lens handles distortion very well. On the optics side, I've had no issues with flaring, vignetting, or chromatic aberrations. On the distortion front, i think it might handle this even better than the 16mm f/1.4 when you shoot close to the lens. The wide aperture is a game changer at the focal length. Two stops faster than the 10-24 makes a huge difference for shooting indoors, and/or in poor light. On that note, the minimum focusing distance is a plus, and allows you to get pretty interesting bokeh when you get up close to subjects. Cons: It's not made by Fuji. It simply doesn't have the fit and finish of a fuji lens. The missing aperture ring obviously doesn't effect the final image, but it does feel like it's missing. You want it to be there, before you move your thumb up to the dial to change it. The lens is, as they say, plasticy - On one hand this contributes to how light and portable the lens is, but compared to other fuji XF lenses it feels kind of off. Sharpness. The lens simply doesn't have that fuji pop. It's more than acceptable, but it's not special. Especially if you punch into 100%, and especially if you crop into the extreme corners. At the end of the day, the IQ is nowhere near the 16mm f/1.4 - Now, it's worth considering that this lens is half the cost. Conclusion: I like it, I really do, it's very fun to use and I'm glad it's in my kit. It's light and portable, and now get's me down to 1 camera, 1 lens. But if you compare it to the f/1.4 fuji primes (that are twice the cost) you can easily see the difference. I guess at the end of the day, you get what you pay for.

Great little lens!

Love this lens! I'm new to Fuji, I wanted a APSC system to add to my full frame kit and this lens is a must have. Fast, lightweight, and very affordable.

The Samyang 12mm f/2.0 AF Lens for FUJIFILM X would need the lens station in order to update the firmware. Though currently there aren't any firmware updates for this lens.

Unfortunately it does not have a manual aperture ring. The aperture must be changed in the camera.
