SLR Magic Cine 50mm f/1.1 FE Reviews
Excellent value.
Use it on my FS7 when in low light. Looks great.
Not bad, but not good lens
I have a SLR magic 35mm F1.4 Lens. It is very nice and solid lens. But this 50mm lens is not good for me. I feel green tint and out of focus in corners. If you use only this lens to make a video, it is OK. You can make a vintage look video. But if you use some lenses to make a video, this lens is not good.
Green tint, bad vignetting, out of focus corners
I bought this lens for my Sony A7sii full frame camera. I previously had the 35mm 1.2 slur magic lens. I love the 35mm version of this lens, it's sharp, smooth, colors are nice too. Naturally I figured the 50mm would be just as good, and I was wrong. Immediately after pulling this thing out of the box and attaching it to my camera I compared it to the 35mm and man there were some differences. There is a bad green tint to the 50mm that makes everything look like a horror movie. In lumetri color in premiere it take +13 magenta to fix this green tint in order to match it to the 35mm. There is also a major issue focusing at infinity. I walked outside to get some shots of some trees from way out to test it and I could not focus on them at all. It was almost like everything in my shot was slightly out of focus. The most annoying issue I've had with this lens is the sides being out of focus. Even at F2 I've had a lot of issues where the sides of the lens will be out of focus. For example if I point the lens at a wall, the middle of the wall would be in focus and the edges of the wall in the image would be out of focus. Also, right out of the box the focus ring is way too tight to use. I almost gave myself blisters trying to pull focus the first day I used this. I figured that over time it would get better. I think I've had this lens for a month now and it's still pretty difficult to focus. I had high hopes for the SLR Magic lenses because of how good the 35mm was. It saddens me to have to write a bad review for the companion version of the 35mm. But the 50mm is hardly a companion and is my least favorite lens now. It is a waste of money.
Exceptionally poor quality control
lens was barely holding together right out of the box, and wasnt centered well anyhow. Corners are never in focus. I appreciate how compact it is, but the quality is clearly a tradeoff.
Fantastic glass for the price point.
I bought this for video use mostly on my A7SII and also FS5. I also own the SLR Magic 25/1.4 as well as some Canon L zooms. Not only was I in the market for some fast primes, but I wanted some glass that had a bit of character. Is this the sharpest 50mm on the market? Is it perfect? No certainly not, but it may well have the most texture and character of any other cine prime in it's price range. If I need tack sharp and simple clean images - I have my Ls for that. These primes don't seem to perform quite as well wide open as they do at most other stops, so I usually don't open up farther than 1.4. In addition, to the naked eye, it's unclear to me that there's much difference in exposure from 1.4 to 1.1. That's fine with me - 1.4 is plenty fast. All in all - this lens certainly has it's drawbacks, but it more than makes up for it in image character and price. This is not the glass for a corporate spot, but if you want a nifty and convenient tool in your arsenal for capturing more emotive moments, this is a great option at a great price. PROS: Price, build quality, size, image character, fast, affordable anamorphic option with the whole line of primes, creamy bokeh for your Instagram followers to gawk at, included ND ships with its own lens cap, big plus. CONS: Noticeably soft wide open at 1.1. Slight vignetting at lower fstops on full frame sensors (some people are infuriated by this type of thing, doesn't really bother me that much. easily fixed with a slight crop, letter boxes etc). Would I recommend? - Yes Will I be buying others in the lineup? - Already have.
BOKEHLICIOUS
So beautiful, it is recommended for professional use. There is no AF or AE, so you need to have a good eye and technique for video recording.
Great lens, great price.
I wasn't expecting much, but this lens is great. I used it on my Sony a6000 to take headshots of an actor friend. I was blown away with the results. It becomes a 100mm on the a6000, and has great sharpness and incredible DOF. The photo below is straight out of the camera. No editing yet.
