Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 STM II Overview

Distinguished by its updated sleeker and lighter weight design, the Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 RF II is the second-generation of this portrait-length prime designed for Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras. The lens's short-telephoto focal length pairs with the bright f/1.8 design to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions and also for controlling depth of field and isolating subject matter. Mark II of this lens sports a more svelte and lighter weight design for greater versatility and portability.
Portrait-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers a wealth of control over focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
One extra-low dispersion element and four elements made from highly transparent glass contribute to reducing a variety of aberrations in order to produce well-corrected imagery with accurate color and no color fringing.
One large-diameter aspherical element minimizes distortion and spherical aberrations in order to produce high sharpness and accurate rendering.
HD Nano multi-layer coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce flare and ghosting for improved contrast. Also, this coating is water-resistant to help protect the exposed surfaces from moisture.
STM autofocus motor delivers quiet and precise focusing performance along with a minimum focusing distance of 2.6'.
Electronic contacts convey Exif data as well as permit camera-based aperture selection. Additionally, an integrated USB port permits updating the lens's firmware.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Included lens hood shades the front element from flare-causing stray light and also offers some additional physical protection.

Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 STM II Reviews

Good lens, lousy lens hood mount

I am happy with the quality of the lens and the images it produces. But when I unboxed it I wasn't sure I'd be able to loosen the lens hood to put it in orientation for use. Viltrox needs to fix the design for the lens hood mounting. As it is I won't put it in the reversed position for storage since it is so difficult to get off again.

SHARP! SHARP! SHARP! SHARP! great lens at a great price. I wish Viltrox had an AF 14-30.

no one will work on this lens

Owned this lens for a year, little used. When attempted to reuse, autofocus wouldn't work. Frozen. No one will repair this lens--not B&H, not the manufacturer, not Phototech. B&H usually stands behind their products, not this time. I am willing to PAY to have it repaired, and B&H says you're outta luck. Buy extra coverage, or spend your money on the Sony 85mm which is a much better 85mm.

Noticeable Purple Fringing

All was going well with this lens until I started noticing significant purple fringing around the subject. Buyer beware! I don't usually write negative reviews but it's important for you to be aware. I wanted to see if this was a one time thing, but had some photos with purple fringe. Below I attach a photo where I manually removed as much purple fringe as possible, but it's still yet noticeable around the subject.

I recently purchased this lens. What a bargain it is. The relatively unknown brand company has created a very solid and economical lens. The lens is very good when I used it in low light conditions with my canon mirrorless camera. The price is fantastic considering what results it yields for the cost.

This lens has better build quality than the Nikon version . The only thing that I don't like is the way the lens hood fits . It's kind of not secure.

It's great! What a steal!

For the price, you can't ask for anything more. Really. It is well built, feels solid, has a nice color rendition along with yummy bokeh. The fringing will appear in some instances, especially heavily backlit situations, but it's true with many other lenses, even the expensive ones. This particular photo did not have any fringing at all! It is a bit too tight to use for family sessions for my preference, I had to be really far away to get this shot. It is great for weddings, and especially ceremonies, when extra reach is always a plus. I am getting the Viltrox 56 for Fuji next.
