Panasonic Lumix S 35mm f/1.8 Overview

By B&H Photo's

Designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras, the Panasonic Lumix S 35mm f/1.8 Lens is a sleek and versatile wide-angle prime that features a similar angle of view to what you see with your naked eye. With a minimum focusing distance of just 9.5", it is well-suited for natural-looking close-up shots. Its 35mm focal length is ideal for snapshots, street scenes, landscapes, and all-purpose shooting, and the lens provides a modestly bright f/1.8 maximum aperture for shallow depth of field control and beautiful bokeh.

The Lumix S 35mm f/1.8 also excels in video recording performance with minimum focus breathing and micro-step aperture control for smooth exposure changes. Made for the modern content creator, this lets you record beautiful 4K video without slowing down or disturbing your subject. The optics are comprised of 11 elements in 9 groups, and the lens includes three aspherical lenses and three extra-low dispersion lenses to reduce chromatic aberration and color fringing for improved color accuracy and sharpness. Made for tough environmental conditions, the lens also features a dust-, moisture-, and freeze-resistant design.

Prime wide-angle lens designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras but can also be used on APS-C models where it provides a 52.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture offers control over depth of field and suits working in low-light conditions.
High-speed, high-precision, and nearly silent autofocus system provides suppressed focus breathing for both stills and video support.
Linear autofocus motor features a high-speed drive system for tracking moving and approaching subjects.
Smooth exposure changes via micro-step aperture control benefits video performance when working in varying light conditions.
Programmable Focus Throw function lets you program the rotation of the manual focus ring to move seamlessly from infinite focus to close focus.
High resolution sharpness and performance to support 4K video.
Featuring a common size, weight, and position of control parts with the other series of Lumix S f/1.8 lenses (85, 50, and 24mm) this S 35mm f/1.8 lens offers a center of gravity that is almost the same, so it is easy to exchange lenses quickly with minimum balance adjustment when the camera is on a gimbal.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Dust-, moisture-, and freeze-resistant design for increased protection from the elements.

Very sharp compact lens.

Another great entry in the 1.8 prime set

Same characteristics as the others: lightweight, reasonably fast, reasonably sharp, nice bokeh, and great colors. It's a really solid lens on its own, but it's the set that really shines.

There is no better affordable lens set out there right now better than Panasonic's f1.8 prime lens set. And this 35mm is just fantastic.

I was undecided with the sigma and the lumix (I have the lumix s5) and I decided to go for the native one and I really loved it, it's a bit soft but nothing that can't be fixed with editing Excellent for video and photography

This has become my new favorite lens on the S5iix. 35mm is a great focal length, and this one is sharp and fun to use.

Great Lens for Video

I borrowed this lens from a friend of mine to see how much I would like it - TLDR, it's great and I'm waiting on mine to arrive and it'll be my go to lens for most things. I do primarily video work now, but if I were primarily a photographer again then I would probably opt for something in f/1.4 for just a little more background blur. However, with my video work, environmental context tends to be important for clients so they don't want backgrounds completely obliterated. The long version... Having come over from Sony, I was hoping this would perform close to the Sony 35mm f/1.8, and it certainly does. Also I'm excited that the other f/1.8 primes have the same dimensions and are basically the same weight. If you have a newer gimbal with good motors on it, the difference of an ounce or two between the various primes shouldn't throw off the balance. Note - I don't know what the actual weight difference is, but I didn't notice it between this and the 85mm unless I held one then immediately held the other. When using this lens, aside from a few test shots I didn't do much photo with it. This review is my perspective from a video project with the lens on a Lumix S5 II and IIX. Focus Distance, Sharpness, Vignette, Distortion: There's a close focus distance probably inside of a foot (I didn't actually measure). The lens has very good center sharpness wide open, stopping down to f/2.8 and beyond the center sharpness is excellent. However, I rarely go beyond f/5.6 so I don't know if it suffers from diffraction if you stopped down beyond that. Wide open, the corner sharpness isn't great. However, it's not horrendous either, and personally I think it gives images/video character. There's also just a little vignette wide open, but it's not bad at all. Stop down to f/2.8 and both corner sharpness and vignette are pretty much resolved. Like other 35mm lenses, you do get a little edge distortion but the lens corrections take care of that. Bokeh & CA: As long as your subject is within 6 feet and you have depth in your shot, the background does melt away nicely. Towards the edges you do get a little cat's eye, and if you punch in a lot you might notice onion rings in some of the bokeh balls. The bokeh is very pleasing, but don't expect it to be blurred away to nothing like an f/1.4 or wider would do. If you're shooting in a high contrast environment (think open shade with strong highlights coming through the leaves) you might notice a little CA - but again you have to punch in to clearly see it and it's not all the time. Autofocus: Photo, it locks on quickly. If you have a rapidly moving subject coming straight at the camera, you might miss a couple shots. But this isn't the type of lens for that kind of action anyway. Video - I never used the S5, aside from when I would PA for my friend, so limited experience. However, on the newer bodies with PDAF - it tracks quietly, smoothly, with no focus drifting/hunting and hardly any focus breathing. In fact, to notice focus breathing, you have to be locked off on a tripod and staring at the edges, then you might notice it. Construction: The lens does feel like plastic, but it doesn't feel cheap. I would say it's on par with most of Sony's f/1.8 lenses, but it's not on par with Fujifilm's lenses. However, I also think most Fujifilm lenses are the gold standard for lens construction and value at the price point. The lens is sealed for weather giving it resistance against the elements. Personally, I did not shoot in any sort of weather, but my friend said he has been out in some light rain with no issues.
