Blackmagic Design Micro Converter Bidirection... Overview

Easily combine SDI and HDMI components in your video setup with the Micro Converter BiDirectional SDI/HDMI 12G from Blackmagic Design. This compact bidirectional converter can convert SDI to HDMI and HDMI to SDI in all SD, HD, and UHD formats up to 2160p60. Since each conversion direction can be a different SD, HD, or UHD video standard, it's like getting two converters in one. It also offers camera control conversion for Blackmagic HDMI cameras like the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K or 6K, enabling you to use them with an SDI-based live switcher.

The pocket-sized Micro Converter BiDirectional SDI/HDMI 12G features HDMI timecode support, SDI re-clocking for stability over long cable runs, support for a wide range of pro broadcast resolutions, including cine-style 48 fps, and both HDMI and SDI embedded audio input and output. This converter features a sturdy metal housing with power and signal LED status indicators and rugged connector interfaces. A USB Type-C port enables the converter to easily connect to and be powered by large-screen monitors, laptops, desktop computers, or projectors. The converter is powered using a separately available power supply.

HDR video will be passed from SDI to HDMI in tact but there will not be any flags or metadata passed to the HDMI. You would need to set the monitor or display manually for the specific HDR mode.

can this convert an hdmi 4k60fps to sdi and an sdi 4k60fps to hdmi at the same time? On the description for bidirectional says "it supports resolutions up to DCI 2K in SDI and 1080p60 in HDMI." Why?

Yes it can. The Micro Converter BiDirectional SDI/HDMI 12G can support 4K60p in both direction simultaneously.

What is the preferred placement of the converter in the signal path that is comprised of camera/monitor/streaming switcher and why?

I'm sorry I didn't understand exactly what you wanted. This is two converters built into one. HDMI to SDI and SDI to HDMI. They can be completely separate from each other. This may still not answer your question. You would place it where you want to convert SDI to HDMI and HDMI to SDI. A lot of it depends on what your equipment and signal types are. In the Blackmagic ecosystem, they are used to connect one of our HDMI based cameras like the Pocket Cinema camera to our SDI based ATEM switchers where both directions of SDI are necessary to control the camera.

No, the Blackmagic Design Micro Converter BiDirectional SDI/HDMI 12G is designed to convert SDI to HDMI or HDMI to SDI. You cannot use the HDMI without use of the SDI.
