Atomos Ninja V+ 5.2" 8K HDMI H.265 Raw Recording Monitor

If you're shooting with an 8K camera, then why not record in 8K raw format using the Ninja V+ 5.2" 8K HDMI H.265 Raw Recording Monitor from Atomos. The Ninja V+ is the same on-camera monitor/recorder as its predecessor the Ninja V 5", but the Ninja+ now features a 5.2" display and records and plays back up to 8K30 raw video to and from purpose-built mini-SSDs.

The Ninja V+ can record Apple ProRes RAW up to 8K30 or DCI 4K120 directly from the sensor, and it is compatible with an array of cameras. Display features include a 10-bit screen with a brightness of 1000 cd/m² AtomHDR technology for accurate monitoring of your log gamma footage and support for popular log formats from Sony, Canon, JVC, Panasonic, Nikon, RED, Sony, and Z CAM cameras.

Built to withstand the rigors of production, the Ninja V+ features an aluminum chassis and powers from a single L-series battery. Additional features include a variety of on-screen exposure analysis, framing, anamorphic de-squeeze, and focus assist tools. Separately available AtomX SDI, AtomX SYNC, CONNECT 4K modules, and an SDI raw license key further expand your Ninja V+ capabilities. Firmware update 10.81.00 supports faster Sony and Nextorage drive detection and optimizes audio while livestreaming, and when used with the optional CONNECT unit, it offers access to powerful cloud-based services.

When combined with the optional CONNECT module, the 10.81.00 firmware update offers:

  • Access to an array of new cloud-based video production services

You can select the source for monitor/output using the four source buttons, and you can also select the source using the monitor touchscreen. There are also four programmable function buttons to perform specific shortcuts.

The monitor allows you to preview your broadcast while simultaneously outputting to a recorder, a monitor, a projector, or when using the optional AtomX Connect for live streaming using a computer. It also supports recording output to ProRes and Avid DNx formats. It is compatible with most streaming platforms such as Skype, Zoom, Teams, and more using UVC with the included USB Type-C cable. Atomos Ninja V+ Reviews

Awesome Monitor/Recorder

This is a nice companion for my Canon R5. It brings this camera's video recording and monitoring to the next level. Being able to record in ProRes and ProRes RAW is awesome, and my MBP M1 Pro and Final Cut Pro will be happy:). The ability to monitor log footage in HDR is a nice feature. I am glad I bought camera ready bundle. That saved me a few hundred bucks.

The menus could be better, of course. Also there's a lot of parts and add-ons that you'll probably need to buy that aren't included in the box, including: SSD storage, SATA III to USB cable (for plugging into your computer), and your preferred power source.

I loved it so much I bought two

This monitor for the price is worth every penny. High quality internal recording and many features that you just don't get in the lower cost models of monitors. Only negative is there isn't SDI included with the HDMI version. Overall a great high quality product that I use for both the Canon C200 and Canon C70.

Perfect companion for the R5

I wanted to expand the capabilities of the R5 with Pro Res and Pro Res raw recording but found the extra features even more valuable. Waveform monitor, False Color, Black and White all help with exposure and focus. The time saved in post is worth the price of admission. It's lightweight on a gimbal and the battery last a long time for me. In fact the R5 uses so little battery since it is not longer recording internally was a bonus I didn't expect. I bought it on sale and it's no I wonder why I didn't get it any sooner. I'm more apt to use the 8K and 5.2K features more often. It didn't take long to get up and running. Ditch the CF2.0 cards and go external. You won't look back.

Perfect size for my Sony A7SIII and FX6 Cameras. I am able to record/backup all of my footage up to 120fps in 4K! I have loaded Phantom LUTs which makes exposing for Slog3 a breeze! I like them so much I own two. This also a cheap alternative to buying CFast Express Type A cards when you purchase a Micro SSD. Below are a couple accessory suggestions that I would highly recommend: HDMI: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1542170-REG/zilr_zrhaa03_17_7_8kp60_hyper_thin.html Micro SSD Media: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1435451-REG/angelbird_atomxmini1000pk_atom_x_1tb_ssd.html OR https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1476620-REG/angelbird_atomxmini2000pk_atom_x_2tb_ssd.html Monitor Mount: Depending upon your accessory mount options, I use the coldshoe attachement: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1510734-REG/smallrig_bse2431_tilting_monitor_mount_with.html

Great features but little buggy

This is my 4th Atomos recorder. I own the Ninja II, Ninja Flame 7, original ninja V and now this. I have been using these devices for long recordings mainly with my Sony mirrorless cameras. First the good. This monitor is very bright, light and has many great features that help dial in that perfect shot (like false color and LUT monitoring). The real game changer is the ProRes RAW recording. The color flexibility in post is incredible, and now any small mirrorless cameras that can output this format can compete with ARRI and RED on image quality. On the other hand the, ProRes HQ is not much better than what you can get out of SD car recording. However the ability too record for hours uninterruptedly is very useful. Now the bad. These devices still have have many bugs. For example, I had the recording stop on me for no reason several times, so now when I record a conference I make sure I have two devices running at all times. I am condition with fear every time I see that little kangaroo. Sure, you can usually restart the receding but this is still a flaw that should have been addressed. Few times I nearly got a heart attack when I got the message that my footage needs to recover and sometimes it may take few minutes to recover. In the ProRes RAW format the footage gets disrupted at times, and later I found out that this happens when shooting in AWB. Recently I had a major problem with audio that cost many several thousands of dollars (and more importantly the shame as I had to explain this to the client). The audio was running into the device from the camera via HDMI, I was monitoring the audio, but the audio track was disarmed. I learned later that I have to occasionally go manually arm the audio tracks as they somehow get disarmed. In summary, the features of these devices and the price is great. However, the quality control is something the company needs to address. As a professional, the reliability is of most importance. I need to know that the device will work flawlessly as designed. My two cents.

I'm having a lot of issue with the Zcam control from the Ninja V+. After hours of research and posts, it seems that my problem has no solution.

1. The delivery was delayed; 2. After opening the box, I found missing parts, and there was no micro HDMI conversion cable, which was suspected to be old; 3. There was no Chinese menu, so it was difficult to install and use; 4. Independent high-definition video recording was not possible when docking with Canon eos R5 , there will be a monitoring menu or focus frame when recording.

This is more of a follow up question than an answer, but can you set the Ninja V+ to record Prores HQ or LT instead of a raw file using the raw signal from the FS5ii? Raw is overkill for me, but 4k 10bit 422 from the FS5ii would be great.
