All the Reach, Half the Weight

Huge focal length, compact and lightweight design. The NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S, from Nikon, is a super-telephoto prime distinguished by the unique combination of one of the longest focal lengths available in a surprisingly portable package. This distinct design is made possible by the inclusion of a Phase Fresnel element, which cuts the overall weight by 50% and the length by 16% compared to the former F-mount 800mm f/5.6 lens.

Compact, Lightweight Design

A sophisticated mixture of technologies makes this super-telephoto a relatively sleek lens, opening up new possibilities for a focal length that was previously relegated to tripod/monopod usage.
  • Phase Fresnel element not only compensates for chromatic aberrations and color fringing but it also replaces several conventional glass elements to promote a more compact and lightweight optical layout.
  • Modest f/6.3 maximum aperture strikes a balance between a practically bright design and a lightweight construction.
  • Compared to the former F-mount 800mm f/5.6 lens, which weighs over 10 lb, this new Z-mount 800mm f/6.3 lens is half the weight at 5.25 lb. Additionally, the mirrorless-specific design also contributes to a shorter overall lens length, measuring just over 15" long, compared to the former lens that measures 18"-long.

S-Line Optics

  • Helping to virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations, color fringing, and comatic aberrations, this lens features three ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements, along with one SR (short-wavelength refractive) element.
  • The SR element features a specialized high-dispersion design that refracts wavelengths shorter than blue; this helps achieve truly accurate color rendering and also aids in making the lens design more compact.
  • Nano Crystal Coat has been applied for well-rounded anti-glare protection at all angles, helping to suppress ghosting, reflections, and flare for higher contrast and more accurate color response when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions.

Autofocus and Vibration Reduction

  • Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate autofocus. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet AF performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
  • Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
  • Vibration Reduction image stabilization reduces the appearance of camera shake by approximately 5 stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations.
  • Synchro VR is also supported when paired with compatible cameras featuring sensor-shift VR, which combines in-body VR with optical VR for improved results of up to 5.5 stops of compensation.

Professional Handling and Construction

  • Physical design focuses the center of gravity around the tripod mount for smoother, more responsive panning, especially when working atop a tripod or monopod. The tripod mount also rotates for easier switching between vertical and horizontal shooting orientations.
  • Compatible with optional Z-Teleconverter TC-1.4x and TC-2x to further extend the reach of this lens.
  • Intuitive "no-look" control layout puts all of the frequently-used buttons and dials in easy-to-reach locations to prevent the need to move your eye from the viewfinder.
  • Advanced weather sealing includes rubber gaskets to prevent dust and moisture ingress, the lens body is made from durable, lightweight magnesium alloy, and the exposed elements have a fluorine coating that repels dirt and oils and is easier to clean.
  • Store a focusing position using the Memory Set button so you can instantly return to this by position by rotating the Fn ring-perfect for capturing fleeting movements.
  • Two customizable L-Fn buttons can be set to configure subject tracking, AF lock, image playback, or other modes. The L-Fn2 button is also accessible from four different locations on the barrel for easy reach.
  • Focus limiter switch can constrain the focus range to 32.8' to infinity or from the full focusing range of 16.4' to infinity.
  • Programmable Control Ring can also be used to control aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation.
  • Kensington lock support for securing the lens in place during remote shooting sessions.
  • Uses drop-in 46mm filters via the included filter holder.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S Reviews

Sharp, sort of lightweight, slow.

This is a great lens, despite the somewhat mediocre title I gave my review. The lens is definitely light for an 800mm prime lens, although I still have weight issues when placed on my Z9 camera. I have been able to walk around the neighborhood with this lens/camera combo with no problems. Having a strap to support it really helps with fatigue over time. The lens is incredibly sharp, showing feather details not seen even with my 500mm PF lens when photographing birds. For the first time I saw red showing through the feathers on a Mississippi Kite soaring straight above me. The f/6.3 is somewhat limiting but with the Z mirrorless cameras this is less of a problem that with older DSLR's. I'm shooting with ISO's above 10,000 on occasion and the grain is really not bothersome (software can handle it in post). The carrying case is a must because it won't fit in my Pelican case and is awkward in my backpack. The case is nicely cushioned and designed with a few external pockets as well. Using it with the 2.0x teleconverter I notice quite a bit of graininess, more than with other lenses. I haven't tried the 1.4x yet but I suspect it will perform better. Most of the time, the 800 range is enough and often too much so that I have to stand further back to get the shot. Dx mode with Z9 camera can give me more apparent magnification as well without sacrificing light gathering capability. In contrast to my initial impression, I will keep this lens.

Tack-Sharp, Hand-holdable Super-Tele from Nikon

Like many, I have loved the Nikkor 500mm PF lens for the F-mount, and have anticipated this new super-tele for the Z-mount since it was announced as a development lens. The big question was, can this 800mm perform at the level the 500mm has performed with the Phase Fresnel technology?. The answer is YES. Very light for it's size, and much shorter than the 800/5.6 predecessor - you really can handhold this lens. In fact, I prefer that over a gimbal head and have found much better freedom for acquiring and tracking fast moving objects, like birds in flight. Image sharpness is incredible, and the VR when paired with the Z9 allows you to shoot at slow shutter speeds in low light and still get a crisp image. I have used it with the Z teleconverters also - both the 1.4 and the 2.0. Image degradation is nearly zero. The only consideration is the loss of light - but in good sunlight you have incredible reach options! This is a must-have lens for any wildlife photographer or others that need access beyond where your feet can take you. Planning to use it for some aviation photography shortly... can't wait!

This is just an update to my earlier post since my photo's didn't upload, but also allows me to give 4 stars to achieve together with the 5 stars below the 4.5 stars I truly feel this lens deserves. See my review below for the reasons it falls just short of 5 stars.

Nikon keeps the PF line pristine.

Nikon just released its new Z 800mm VR S lens. The latest in its line to use the Phase Fresnel Element technology. And as with its predecessors, it delivers great optics in a package that is significantly smaller than other lens in the similar focal lengths. This lens, provides a focal length 25 percent larger than an other lens I own yet weighs half the weight of comparable glass on the market. While I still mostly use a tripod, it could be hand held for quite a while. My only gripe is I wish the foot had a built in Arc-Swiss mounting system.

Will this lens work with the D850?
Asked by: John
It won't. DSLR's have a MUCH longer flange distance. The $16,300 Nikon 800mm f/5.6 lens will work on any Z mount camera but a lens built for the Z mount i.e. this 800mm f/6.3, will not work on the D850.

It will not. Any Sony E mount lens can work on a Nikon Z mount camera with an adapter but Nikon Z lens will not work on a Sony E mount camera. Sony E flange distance is longer then Nikon Z.
